We were driving from Oklahoma City to Marfa, an 11-hour drive. This is the third day of driving on our roadtrip from Pittsburgh, PA to Texas, and we just about wanted to kill ourselves from the *ahem* GORGEOUS scenery of the midwest. After miles upon miles of farmland we finally came upon civilization. Anson, TX. We were starving and our choices were apparently Sonic or...the Hatahoe. What the hell is a Hatahoe? Well you'll just have to visit to find out because I'm not going to spoil the surprise. I will tell you that even when you ask what Hatahoe means, the answer makes no sense. No matter...it's food.

Your choices here are basically burgers, chicken fried steak, and chicken fried chicken. I got the "steak sandwich"...I guess the girl could tell we were rolling in from the East Coast, because she made sure to inform me, "You know that's chicken fried steak, right?" Don't worry random Texan girl, I know I'm not getting a Philly Cheesesteak here. My friend got steak fingers, which are exactly what you think they are. The food wasn't bad. But two things of note...the jalapeño poppers were wrapped in BACON instead of breaded. Delicious. And the "puffs"! Again, like the phrases "Hatahoe" and "Steak fingers," "Puffs" was a foreign term to me. It's basically deep-fried dough, like a donut without sugar. Also delicious.

So if you're passing through Anson and you're faced with the oh-so-tough decision between Sonic and the mysteriously named Hatahoe...just do the Hatahoe. The poppers and the puffs are totally worth it, and you can still get your cherry limeade fix (isn't that the only thing Sonic is good for, anyway?).

This place is a total dive.  It definitely looks sketch from the outside but I am well aware those are usually the best.  It has a neon "cherry limeade" sign otherwise I probably wouldn't have noticed it at all.

Of course I tried the cherry limeade and it was delicious.  I got a chicken tender basket which was piping hot and nothing out of the ordinary but good.  However it came with "puffs".  I wasn't quite sure what they were and they just look like rolls or something to me, until you bite into them and they are yummy fried bread.  Kinda like a homemade donut without the sweetness.  That made this place a winner for me.

The rest of the menu was burgers, sandwhiches etc.  It has a bunch of wacky pictures and memorabilia on the wall, mismatched booths and chairs.  The fried smell was in full effect but surprisingly I didn't leave smelling like it.  By noon the place was jumping and the weird thing it was quiet...like eerily quite.  Looked around and realized that the good ole boy clientele was just too busy enjoying their lunches to talk.  :)
