This is a real bar with great character, cheap booze and fantastic ambiance. Â If you are lucky, you will be there during a rainstorm and watch it through the open doors. Â It was White Russian Saturday when we went and they were the best tasting we've ever had! Â Lots of locals along with tourists. Â Oh, no more smoking inside.
Review Source:A MUST when you visit Natchez. We went on a Sunday afternoon for a drink and ended up staying for about 7 hours. Â Cheap drinks, FANTASTIC live music, and we made friends with the lovely locals and ended up after partying late into the night! Oh, and smoking is permitted in the bar...so you may or may not like that!
Review Source:What a great hole in the wall kind of place. Full of locals, we stopped in to have a beer and was informed about the live band playing later on in the evening. So we had dinner else where and headed back at 9p. Nothing but locals in the beginning but people kept coming and the place got packed. We got trashed! Cheap drinks, good people and a total come as you are atmosphere. The bartenders are great and no one seems to care how sloppy you get because there is always someone else drunker!
Review Source:I have literally been coming to this bar since I was a baby. Sometimes my dad used to bring me in on Sunday afternoons and JD would make me cherry cokes. These days, JD makes me shots of Bushmills and miller high lifes. Â Generations of my family have enjoyed a drink or two at this fine establishment. I even bring my daughter down there when we are tooling around downtown when we visit.
JD Montgomery is THE attraction. After he  is sufficiently lubricated, he has been known to stand up on a chair or a barstool (he is a little leprechaun, you know) and wail House of the rising sun, and Jambalaya. Please make sure that seeing that goes on your bucket list.
There is almost always live music on the weekends, usually Southern Rock, there are big, tough, motorcycles parked in the front, and some very interesting memorabilia all over the walls. If you get there early, have a Baileys and coffee, and ask the owner, Andre to tell you some very interesting stories full of local history and color. The mud slide of the early 80's, or the time the huge blocks of ice came down the river.
They have a foosball table and darts in the back, with a very curious, and very old little phone booth full of Nellie Jackson memorabilia. If you don't know who Nellie is, just ask any local.
I have to mention the courtyard. I have spent many a warm night, drinking ice cold beers, and catching up with old friends. It's hidden (literally) on the side of the building.
When we come in a big group and want to talk (the band can be a little loud in front) I love hanging out in the "Jungle Room". I'm not sure that's what it's really called, but if you go in, you'll see why I call it that.
I don't know what else to say but I love this bar. Nothing ever changes. Same crazy ass, fantastic, amazing, bartenders. Same people who have been coming here for years. The same songs on the jukebox. This place makes me 21 forever. It's absolutely magical.
*sidenote- I have spent a night or two at the attached Mark Twain guesthouse, and it comes highly recommended.
Every time I go to Natchez I visit "Under the hill Saloon" this is an awesome place to sit with locals and listen to great stories about Natchez. Â The people here are awesome! Â I "heart" JD the bartender!!! Â What a spit fire Irish Man with a BIG heart and lots of amazing stories. Â They always have live music on the weekends. Â In fact, on Sunday, "Barefoot Tennessee" plays here and they are incredible. Â You can't leave Natchez without visiting Under The Hill Saloon!
Review Source:If you find yourself in Natchez, MS, head straight to this bar. The folks in this town celebrate its history and love sharing all its great stories. This bar is a classic dive bar. They host music just about every night. This is the place to meet locals and listen to stories. The folks are real, the drinks are cheap and the space is filled with history. Cheers.
