I love this place. Great pizza, awesome outdoor setting with lots of good artists stopping by regularly to play shows. I know the owner is working on expanding the services, there is talk of sunday morning football game viewings and longer hours. I try and drop by every Thursday I can and I really enjoy the "rotating taps" with new kinds of beer to try that pair well with my pizza. Really like the waitress there, she is really sweet. All in all a great place, just don't call the number listed above unless you want the union house in chicago to make you a lamb sausage pizza like they did for me. This is one of the few 5 star ratings I give. This is truley a wonderful community environment.
P.S. Try Monkey Knife Fight beer, really good!
Stopped in during their "soft opening" with a group of six. Â The evening was warm and we sat on the patio under the grape arbor. Â Sweet setting and could be lovely. Â Unfortunately, the lighting really needs to be improved. Â The lighting at the table was very dim and not festive despite the single string of Christmas lights--candles? better overhead lighting? Â
The employees seemed friendly enough but it was hard to tell the employees from the owners/friends of owners. Â Our waitress was attentive and cheerful but kept trying to clear the table even though we were still eating and drinking.
Now, to the food. Â The wood fired pizza was very good. Â The crust was thin and crisp and the toppings were fresh and balanced. Â I would say this was easily the best pizza I've had in the area.
The area is desperate for a good, casual place to eat out. Â The patio is lovely, the pizzas were great, and Moke Hill is an interesting town. Â It could be a winner! Â Now they just need to get a little more professional on the ambiance and the service.
A-OK, if you can reach them, that is. First of all, the phone number is 623-5965, in area code 209. Â But don't count on them answering it. Â They just opened recently and we've been trying to get in there during the hours we had understood they would be open. Â This morning they said they would be there and answering the phone, but they didn't so we couldn't call in an order. Â We did get a Canadian bacon and pineapple pizza finally, in the evening, and it was very good, though a bit skimpy on the bacon and overpriced ($17. for a medium). Still, it's got that great freshly made, wood fired taste and they should do well therefore, as soon as they get their act together hour and phone wise. They need to post hours that you can see from the street, and then stick to them.
In what is officially a ghost town of around 200 souls, counting the ghosts, they will really need the passers by, and to get them to stop off or make the trip you have to be very dependable, and of course you MUST be reachable by phone. The nearest town is about ten miles. We'll give them time to get their act together and then try again.
I'm on vacation for 10 days here in Northern California, one huge problem for this Chicago boy...no good pizza. Oh not any more. I'm staying to the historic Hotel Leger and right down the hill at the Union House these guys were having their "Soft" opening this weekend and I got to go in and sit down for lunch. Wood Oven Pizza, made from scratch...ohh yeah.
You first greeted right away by extremely friendly and very engaged employees. The open kitchen allows you to see the pizzas being made fresh, hand tossed dough and freshly prepared toppings. We choose to eat inside...there's a huge bar, can bottle or premium soda selection, and fresh lemon water. The seating is comfortable and the interior décor is very cool, from local historic pictures, little relics they found in their remodel, and big screen TV's for the game. I would say awesome for family dining, family get together, a night out, or a hang out. We looked at the outside patio and it is incredible with patio tables under an awesome pergola covered in grape vines. It's so cool.  There is also a large outdoor stage and a small indoor one for live music or for someone to use if hosting an event at the Union House. (And why not their food rocks, its unique, tell your CEO's this is a cool place for employee appreciation day.)
We ordered two pizzas...The Hawaiian BBQ Chicken and a Sausage and Pepperoni Pizza. There are 6 sauces you can pick from and as a garnish they can brush the outer crush with garlic/oil, rosemary/garlic, parsley, chives, or parmesan...ohh its good. Â It took less than 10 minutes for the pizzas, but when they arrived they smelled awesome. Also I want to mention, the smell reached the Hotel with their wood oven that's on the outside patio, made us float down the hill like Homer to the restaurant. Anyway, we started eating and I have to say...YES! Northern California now has a place with GREAT Pizza!!! It's was so good I killed my whole pie, even the wife finished half of hers. The chef even came out to ask...The Classic sauce, sausage/pepperoni with Garlic/Olive oil Garnish I ordered was so good. The thin crust cooked perfect, the meat so good with a kick from the pepperoni but not too overwhelming to take the taste from the sausage. The outer crust was a surprise joy, like something separate from the pie, it was like suddenly having an awesome breadstick at the last bite. I ate the whole thing. The wife had Hawaiian BBQ Chicken with a rosemary/garlic garnish. I had to try it...the chicken on the pizza, marinated and grilled, oh dude it could be served on cardboard and be awesome. The fresh sweet onions, pineapple, bacon, with that chicken...oh it was so good. I was so full, but wanted to try more, thank god I'm here for 9 more days. Having the Drew's Baked Potato Pizza Pie later for dinner, I was told by many today it is incredible, I'm sure it is.
If you are anywhere near this place and don't stop in you are not doing yourself a favor. It is killer, the food is worth a drive, hell I flew 2400 miles and look forward to going to this place, several times while here...might as well try all the pizzas. The Union House Wood Oven Pizzas is 5 star food, 5 star employees, and 5 star atmosphere, this is not a place to miss and a must GO for anyone whole truly loves awesome pizza.
