Went here for the first time a little while back. The people working there are very friendly and were very helpful. Glasses/Pitchers are poured favorably to the customers.

Nice, laid back place. Pretty casual. Younger crowd, most people arrive in groups.

I heard a few people throughout the night slightly complain about the fact they don't serve other types of alcoholic drinks.

up and up, UP AND UP!! YARRR!! I love this Bellingham bar!  The dart board is always free, the pitchers are poured full and the people there are always amazing but mostly it's the bartenders that make that place so great.  Very gracious, funny and stern when they need to be.  I miss you already!

So it has been about 30 years since my last visit as a student at WWU.   Back then it was a true dive bar, clearly the Up has had many renovations.    The bright work (wood finish) was as good (maybe bettor) than any pub in Ireland.   It really did not have that dive feel to it as I expected.   My wife was not keen to go there due to the reputation but we were both pleasantly surprised.  Admittedly I was looking forward to seeing the ol' place in it's original condition, no joy:)    We were there well before the crowds on a Saturday.   The bartender was full of great factoids about the place.   Huge selection of draft beers, another big change.   In my previous visit, you had two choices, PBR draft and in the can.   There is a great historic feeling to the place,  Didn't try the food but peeking into the kitchen it looked clean and well organized.

Went there for couple drinks, it was good place to hang out with friends.
They have a good choice of tasty beer, but I wish that they serve other alcohol drinks as well.
Up&Up is definitely good place to go and chill out.

Really cool oldworld feel to this bar, great for smokers since half of it is outside. Super bummer they do not serve hard alcohol. Beer only bar, but sometimes have good deals in you are in a beer mood.

This place served well during the college years and it really was the "'Cheers,' everyone knows your name" joint. It was the meet up place that most of the time wasn't worth leaving.

Cheap beer when you need it and when you finally get a paycheck not going to rent they do have a good selection of microbrews.

Coming from the 4square mayor, this place takes the cake for Bellingham nightlife. Come here any night for amazing pints, out of this world pitchers, and all the fresh za you can stomach. There really is no better place to start your party than at the World Famous Up & Up.

If you like beer, pizza, and noise, this may be the place for you. It's fun with a group and the pitchers are cheap. As someone else mentioned, the bathroom has no mirror, which was unexpected and a little annoying. Can get super crowded. There is pool and also an outdoor area so it can get a bit smoky for a place with no smoking inside. If you get a table it can be great for a group, though you'll be pretty close together.

I like the Up & Up for their cheap PBR, and pool tables.  For sure my go-to place at the beginning of the night, and a great place to stay late as well.  The bathroom has no mirror, though which is both good and bad.  A much better alternative to booty shaking!

I have a special place in my heart for The Up.  Yes, it's a dive.  But it's one of those places you keep going to (or at least I do), and I originally never thought I would.  However during college, and even after whenever I'm up for a visit, I always find myself spending my late night in The Up.

Their beer selection is pretty extensive (for Bellingham), and I cannot complain about their $2 pitchers of PBR (except that it's PBR and they used to be a $1 - but hey! It's still cheap).  They also have slices of Rudy's Pizza available, which are pretty dang good sober or not sober.  If that doesn't tickle your fancy, Pel'Meni is right across the street - ahhh brings me back to my college days.

I love ths place!!! Wed. nights... 2 dollar pitchers of PBR, super cheap beers, connected to Rudys(pizza) so in the evenings they have fresh pizza cooking and they sell by the slice! Nice outdoor seating for the summers- relaxed atmosphere.  One of my favorite bars in bellingham.

Renovated dive bar in downtown Bellingham. I always noticed Up & Up, because it is next to the YMCA and usually bars in Bellingham creep me out. Up & Up reminded me not to judge a book by it's cover!

There is a lot of room to hang out with friends and enjoy drinks of all varieties from the local microbreweries. It's a pretty big list too, and they have amazing prices on pitchers if you go at the right time! The space (which sometimes is lacking at other dives) is ample until it gets busy! A lot of college kids and locals hang out at the Up & Up. My friends and I played a game of pool...I lost...There are greasy things to eat to soak up the beer!

I was also impressed with the bartender. Usually in dives you have to help yourself. But he was so helpful in recommending a delicious beverage for us and letting us sample it before we decided. I'm sure it's not always like that when this place gets slammed, but I really appreciated the gesture.

I have been going to the Up and Up since 1993. It was the first bar my friends brought me to when I came home after being stationed in Germany. I remember the Up and Up to be the hottest, smokiest, beer soaked place in Bellingham. I remember walking in a Thursday night and the smoky, sweaty, beer soaked air would be overwhelming as you walked in. It was twice as big before Rudy's Pizza moved in. Pitchers used to be a dollar. The bathrooms were disgusting. There was so much graffiti it looked like the walls hadn't been painted in 40 years. The lines were so long for the bathrooms that it wasn't uncommon to see someone urinating in the sink. (male or female)

You left the place soaked in beer, sweat and smoke and your clothes and skin would soak that shit up as a reminder of where you were the night before.

It's cleaned up a bit since then and maybe for the better. They still have the cheapest beer and Rudy's Pizza is a hell of a lot better then the hamburger and hot dogs they used to sell. The Up and Up is also the name of a ski lift at Mt Baker. Germans have never heard of the Up and Up so it is not "World Famous" yet.

Great beer selection, great decor, less than spectacular company.  A bar in a college town can hardly be held responsible for the crowd they draw (nor complain much, because this place gets packed), BUT that's exactly why I won't be back.

Cheap beer, great pizza, and fun crowds.

Plus, who doesn't love being able to hang outside with a pitcher of beer and good company?

Cheap beer, but no where to really put it unless you manage to score one of the very, very few seats in the place. I enjoyed that it was a loud, fun atmosphere, but it wasn't so loud that you couldn't talk to other people.

I met up with some friends here when I had just turned 21 and got my first beer in a bar (Mac and Jack's African Amber). I managed to make new friends as soon as I got there and it ended up being a cool night. The Up definitely holds a special place in my heart.

My second favorite dive bar of all-time. Back in college (when they had $1 pitchers of Busch Light! Mmmmm...), I think I spent more time at "The Up" than I did in class... The vintage sign claims the place is "World Famous"... I can't say for sure, but it seems reasonable enough. Unfortunately, the Up&Up has been remodeled and renovated in recent years, making it kind of nice inside...and half the size of its former self (long story). However, they still have two pool tables, a huge selection of beer, cheap and micro, and one of Bellingham's largest outdoor seating areas, a nice perk in the Spring and Summer.

$3 pitchers before 11! I'm down! Arrived at 10:53 so we had to buy 2 cheap pitchers right off the bat. My belly is still full from all of that beer I had to ingest. Whew...

The only bummer is that there aren't enough tables inside. Hey Up&Up: If you don't serve mixed drinks, we need someplace to set our pitchers. Having to walk around with a beer in one hand and a big ol'pitcher in the other impedes my "game" and makes me feel a little bit like an alkie.

Also, this dude in a Santa suit was walkin around spreading holiday cheer. Brilliant!

Definitely a college hangout. Referred to locals as simply "the Up". The place for students to be Thursday nights when pitchers of Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR) are $3. The beer selection is decent (they have gluten-free beer!) and relatively inexpensive compared to other Bham hangouts. Pizza is available by the slice, which is pretty amazing when consuming multiple pitchers of PBR!

The "patio" is open when the weather is nice, but is often crowded with people smoking. As for the bathroom, there is only ONE toilet in the women's, but bring a sharpie and leave your mark on one of the more popular bars in Bham.

Oh God. The Up & Up. I'd forgotten about this place, until stumbling across it again here on Yelp. Or rather, my brain had banished all memories of it to some obscure part of my subconsciousness in a futile act of intellectual self preservation.

I gave it two stars, because back when I went to school at Western, I was able to buy a pitcher of cheap beer and two hamburgers there for $2. To me, that was the only really selling point of this institution. Just remember, if you go there on dollar beer night (which, I've heard is $2 beer night now), and are lucky enough to get a pitcher:

    Don't. Set. It. Down.

Pitchers get scarce fairly early on, and latecomers circle like vultures, waiting to snap up your pitcher, regardless of if its empty or not. Holding your beer glass, pitcher and a hamburger or two at the same time proves to be a bit of a juggling act (especially as the crowd presses in around you), but you can do it! I have faith in you!

Anyhow, as you might have deduced by now, I'm not a huge fan of the Up & Up. If you only have a couple of bucks, and need beer, it's the place for you. But, if you have say, a five dollar bill, I'd recommend several other establishments around town, like the Beaver, Ranch Room or 3B. That is, if they are still there. It's been a few years. I'm an old man.

More formative than anything else during my WWU college career.

The walls are adorned with carpet samples that I can only imagine harbor things that make boogers look downright appealing. There are some poignant thoughts scrawled on the walls which you will feel like adding to as soon as you've reached a certain tipping point in your evening.

You can get drunk on watery beer for only a couple of bucks if you're a petite 20ish year old girl.

Because the beer is so watery the toilets (all two of 'em) get a work out and the bathrooms overflow on a nightly basis and everyone seems to just take this as a fact of life at the Up & Up.

If the floors are too gross, and it's not raining horizontally, you can go outside to their "patio" and sit in the alley. Sometimes there is a grill out there where you can order fifty cent hamburgers, it's an extra dime or so for cheese. That might not be there anymore but if they are...don't give any lip to the biker who runs the grill. If he's closed for the night, he's closed. Helen.

Ahhhh good ol up and up...

They have a decent selection of beers on tap, including Spaten and butt loads of college kids! Hey, I didn't know B-Ham is a college town-I didn't grow up in the NW and I didn't go to college-QUIT JUDGING ME!!!

Anyway, college kids are fun people watching...and apparently fascinated by a 30 year old woman with two half sleeves(it was prolly more the fact that there was a 30yr in the bar-akward, table for Mel). Deadly ground for me though, as I like to eat young college boys for breakfast and then leave them feeling empty and alone.

HERE'S TO YOU MRS. ROBINSON...doot do doot doot do do
    ok, not really   : |

The Up & Up is a good place to go on Thursday (or hit up 80s night at the Nightlight). Although, the bartenders are usually rude, and they don't have any hard liquor (just beer, and not a very large selection either). One of the nicest features of "The Up" (as locals refer to it as) is that they have an outside area open in the summer, and they have a foosball table.

The bathrooms are cramped and somewhat confusing to newbies (who happen to be drunk). But at least men can read the newspaper that is taped to the wall while taking a leak in the urinal.

They sell beer to go (PBR tallboys!), and kegs to go as well.

$1 PBR pitchers Thursday nights!  Lots of local college students, this place is always packed.  It's cheap, easy to find, and fun if you like the party atmosphere.  Get here on Thursday!
