What a great venue!! I saw Jewel play acoustic here last week. The theater is small ish but the sound quality throughout is outstanding, I was about halfway back in the theater and could see the stage very clearly and it felt as good as being close to front.

The staff is down to earth and friendly, and if there are any questions or issues I had they were patient and helpful.

Will definitely see another show here soon! This was the highlight of my Napa experience

This old deco theater is really beautiful and worth traveling an hour to see a show. It's located in an area of Napa's downtown with lots of restaurants to choose from. There is food at the theatre -- with several veggie options -- but I haven't tried it. My only complaint is they don't offer a sparkling water for sale -- and I do love my haughty taughty sparkling water.

Beautiful historic theatre in napa, seems like every seat is a great seat. Amazing sound and great wine selection!

I hate to give the Uptown a negative review because I like supporting local businesses and because it is a nice venue in a great location, but overall I'm really disappointed with this theater. Tickets are overpriced and the lineup is usually obscure & lackluster.

I actually prefer to drive an hour to Santa Rosa where I've seen bigger names, better shows, more variety, great seating and cheaper tickets.

Beautiful theater! Great sound, friendly staff. Feel lucky to have such a great place here in town. Needs to add a few more shows

Great venue in Downtown Napa. With 864 comfortable seats, everyone has a great view and vantage point. Beautiful in that it has a great marquee and the architectural design inside, on the ceilings and walls makes it very cozy. Can't quite figure out why the security staff is so zealous but they are serious about their jobs. These are middle aged people that are responsible for crowd control. Search purse, get wristband, stamp inside wrist. Really? I bet they couldnt even tell you why they do this. We were there to see Boz Scaggs not Snoop Dogg errrr Lion. Acoustics are great and they serve wine, beer and snacks. Who knew, Stella Artois comes in a can? Having said all that about security, you were welcome to step outside your row and dance in the aisle which I thought was cool. The infamous Dan Band is playing on Friday while I am here. I might just have to check it out, considering my great first experience.

I really like this venue. Old-timey theatre turned music venue. It feels really personal, I really felt I could connect with the artists. Merle Haggard was especially good. I do feel like some of the shows are a bit overpriced, and it would be nice to have a better plan for the artists to sell merch. Besides that I will definitely be returning again.

Great venue in Napa. Beautiful theater.  We bought our tickets late to see Los Lobos so was in row aa - which is one less than the highest row in the balcony section.  Our view was wonderful, our seats were comfortable and Los Lobos put on an amazing show with half of the audience dancing through much of their amazing music.  We could see the drummer well as well - and for being younger than other members of this East LA band, he did a stellar job.  We loved our seat; we love this venue; and its a great place to see a show.  There is a small cafe with sliders, etc at this venue; we ate at a different restaurant in advance so just bought beers and water.  Parking is easy to find.

The only funny thing is that when you enter the theater its sort of like a juggling act.
First, open the purse or belongings - check (nothing new).
OK - put a wrist band on with name of the theater (ok) on your left hand.
Now, they take your tickets (ok)
but when they asked to see your right hand to put a dark mark on it,
it started to feel like a dance game at an arcade gallery.

My friend drove us up to Napa to see a Mat Kearney concert here! When buying tickets, I was a little disappointed that the whole venue is reserved seating, but I feel like that is probably preferable for the older crowds here. As college students, we seriously felt like the youngest people there.

The venue is really pretty, and it is nice to sit down at a concert for once! The seats are pretty plush and comfortable. I was a little disappointed that our reserved seats were so far back when there were empty seats in rows in front of us. However, we had an amazing view of the stage, and the sound was also great. Mat Kearney is so good live (this was my second time seeing him!). I know this is unrelated, but you should seriously look up his music.

Street parking was easy to find, and the area seems relatively safe, albeit a little empty at night.

I recently attended the Snoop Dogg show at the Uptown Theatre and my credit card and ID fell out of my back pocket in the seats we had. I didn't notice until long after we were gone - and because the show was Friday night, I couldn't get a hold of anyone until Monday. When I finally got in touch with the customer service I was hopefully but also ready for her to say 'sorry we didn't find it'. To my disbelief she told me she put them both in the mail to me that morning! I was so thankful to her, it was an extremely nice gesture to have done that seeing as I live in Santa Rosa. Thanks so much to the wonderful staff at the Uptown!

Great venue, easy parking.  I gave it 4 stars because the sound guys in the concert I was at last night, Sons of Champlain, were terrible.  It ruined the whole concert for us and we actually left early.  We had orchestra seats so the view was perfect.  Temp in the theatre perfect as well.  I'll return but will ask who the sound novices were first so that it doesn't happen again.

Small theater with good views and acoustics.

My bf and I attended a concert recently, and got balcony seats (about 5-6 rows from the very back of the theater).  The view of the stage from our seats were good and the sound quality was good.  (Of course, this probably explains why the balcony tickets were so expensive compared to other Bay Area theaters!)  Considering how high up we were, it was a tad warm in our seats, but it wasn't as bad as in other theaters elsewhere either!

We actually stumbled upon this in a very "Napa" round about way-we bid on a silent auction item at this cute little boutique in Yountville owned by three beautiful Sisters, although ours was not the winning bid it got us to look into the Uptown-WOW-Amazing architecture and historic value! We have purchased our first event to see Dana Carvey...excited!  I will be back to follow up on our experience!

What a great venue for a concert.
We saw Lila Downs. We had great seats in the fourth row, but the reality is that there is not a bad seat in the house.
The acoustics are great and it has a very intimate feel. Easy parking a block down from the venue. There is also a well stocked bar, and they do allow drinks in the auditorium. This is great since you have to have a sip of tequila when you listen to Lila Downs sing old Mexican Folk songs. Great venue!

Overall a great venue. Saw The Mavericks. Our side seats weren't that great. They claim there are no bad seats, but I beg to differ. The way the stage sits it makes it difficult to see very well from the first two side rows. Other than that all other seats are probably good I am disappointed, otherwise it would be 5 stars easy! Raul Mallo and The Marvericks were  great.

I saw Willie Nelson and Family here.  It was a fantastic show and a great venue.  The most important pros of this theater are its intimate feel and great look inside, plenty of free local parking, location in a nice town, and short lines. The theater is decorated nicely inside and has pretty lighting.  It has a kind of pleasant fancy nostalgic ambiance.  I didn't notice a single light bulb burnt out outside.

There is a Courtyard Cafe that sells sliders, chicken tenders, and fries, mostly in the $10-15 range.  There is a standing bar too.  One thing I found lacking was a water fountain and they don't let you bring in water.

    Overall, though, a wonderful venue.

Great venue to see a concert at.  Just saw Joshua Radin, Tristan Prettyman and My Name is You here last week.  A small and intimate setting, every seat is a great seat here!  Was able to hear them when they walked away from their microphones...great acoustics.  Very clean place, even the bathrooms!
Seats were extremely comfy and well padded.  Showed an hour before show time and was able to still park right in front of the venue.  Will definately see more events here.  Only 20 minutes from Vallejo.

Very classy & nice size theater. Not to big, not too small. They sell, drinks & food/snacks. Only can bring the drinks inside the theater but the food in the food area. Sucks they only have beer & wine license only & very low quality Vodka. I'm glad it's not a big theater, because that just means after a show, there won't be so much crowd coming out. Plus, they don't have a parking lot which is actually good cuz everyone would be coming out of the same area. Easy to find parking anyway.

this is a small intimate theatre where we saw adam corolla.  the bathrooms are clean and there is an outdoor patio for drinks and food.  i dont know if this is at every show, but they had big bowls of grapes.  not sure if this is sanitary either.

comfortable clean and parking is easy

VERY cool place!  I like these intimate old time places that have killer acts and sound/lighting.  The theatre was restored very nicely.  They have a nice little side patio for food and drinks before the show.  We had the burger sliders which were VERY good!  Their fries were killer too!

Seriously, not a terrible seat in the house. It can get a little expensive depending on who you see here.  But, you won't be straining your eyes just to watch the concert on a giant TV screen to the side of the stage!

The sound system was great!  Nice and clear.  Not too loud either.

It is so close to a 5 star rating.  My 'personal' wish is that places like this would have a better area for getting up and dancing/watching the show.  I dig being up front at a show.  Since this is a 'seating only' type of place, you can't really do that unless you're in someones way or WAAAY off to the side.

If they had an option of removing the front area seating for 'general' audience (depending on the show of course), it would be AWESOME!

Anyway, this is quickly becoming a great place to come and watch a concert.

    Johnny

While I appreciate the comments from the Uptown's manager, I respectfully disagree that allowing people to congregate in the aisles is safe. Also, it does not make for a good experience in a theater that is seating only. There is no open area for standing room only, except the aisles. During the show I attended, the aisles were pretty much completely blocked, so I am not sure what the definition of "too full" is.
Like I said, with fees and taxes, our tickets were $75 through Ticketmaster, plus $15.75 in fees for a total of $90.75 times two = $181.50. So, technically not $200, but pretty dang close in my estimation. Finally, nowhere on the ticket or any where else does it mention anything regarding the policy of letting people stand in the aisles or the show being general admission. On the Uptown website, it states, "All seating is reserved unless otherwise specified." Perhaps it was implied by the ticket price that this was a G.A. show, but in no way was it "specified" anywhere.
Clearly I am not the only person who has had this experience here. Perhaps the Uptown should re-think its communications regarding ticketing for "rock shows" to avoid having their patrons being disappointed. Had I understood this in advance, I would have adjusted my expectations accordingly (and been prepared to knock down a few inebriated aisle-dancers on my way to the fire exits if need be).

They get one star for the beautiful theater.

This place is expensive and misleading. You should know their policy about seating before you buy tickets.

From Sheila Groves-Tracey, Executive Director of Uptown Napa:

"In general, our rule of thumb for these types of shows is to allow people to come down toward the stage as long as the aisles don't get too full."

What this translates into is all of the drunkest dipwads, who would actually stand in the aisles, will be in front of/next to of you making you feel stupid that you paid for a reserved seat. And what is "too full"? The whole front half of the orchestra section aisles were filled with people. Usually this is called, "GENERAL ADMISSION", but not at the Uptown in Napa.

.I paid $100 with all the fees for a non-scalped ticket. It was supposed to be a "reserved" ticket, only because I thought I wouldn't have to deal with any of the bs that comes with a general admission ticket. Nope.

Staff was finally notified and they did nothing.

So, if you are the type that likes to get sloppy obnoxious drunk and rush the front, or if you like to pay a crapload of money for a pseudo reserved seat and then get these yahoos next to you, this is THE place for you!

Shh, don't tell anyone about this place.  Seating capacity of about 850, it is a great, intimate place with great acoustics.  Two lines/areas for beverages and the line moved pretty fast  to buy merchandise.  This was the second time seeing Jonny Lang at this location, I can see why he and others book their shows here.  The prices are decent.  I think we paid $55/person for this latest show, but worked out to be more like $70 after all the fees.  I'll pay that price for the farthest seat at this venue, but can I brag and say I've had 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th row seats in the center?  I've paid more $ at places like Mountain Winery in Saratoga, Paramount in Oakland, and a lot more $ at the Wente Vineyards in Livermore for seats much farther away.  The whole experience here is just so nice for an indoor venue.
The staff is very friendly, parking was (knock on wood) not difficult, and the seats are comfortable, with cup holders in the arm rests.

If the pleasure of the beautiful theater and how great their sound team has made it sound doesn't make you feel glad you're therewith staff will BLOW YOU AWAY with hospitality, graciousness and just REAL people that treat you like they would want to be treated.  My wife and I attended Tears for Fears on Saturday 9/10/11 and she was on crutches.  Needless to say, it is not easy to get around on crutches anywhere, but Becci went out of her way to see if there was option for my wife's seating situation that would make things easier.  Becci was attentive, caring and did it with a warm smile. (not to mention, she's a great dance partner).  Rob seemed to have the place in order and was on top of everything.  Again, he was alert, friendly and well aware on what was going on at all timescale this with extreme professionalism.

The show was great, the staff makes me want to go back and the city of Napa was like a warm bed...easy to get into and difficult to get leave.

I endorse the Uptown Theater with confidence and it is an absolute pleasure to experience.  Thank you Uptown Theater!

My new favorite venue in the Bay Area. What's not to like about:

-Booze! Awesome beer and wine selection and you can bring your beverage into the theater with you

-Intimate! With capacity at 857, there's not a bad seat in the house.

-Small town goodness! Everyone is so damn nice, from the ushers to the bartenders. Plus there's ample parking in the neighborhood and some great restaurants in walking distance.

Less than an hour from San Francisco but world's away when it comes to the live show experience. In the past the concert calendar wasn't that impressive but they are starting to book some great acts (Band of Horses, Tears for Fears, Ryan Adams, the Pixies, etc.) and I won't hesitate to come back up to catch a show.

Been to this lovely theater twice this summer 2011 (Marcia Ball/Tommy Castro & Marshall Tucker Band) and going again soon.  I love this place, not a bad seat in the house, great acoustics, great roadies & soundmen and the rest of the staff is superb! Thank you Napa for this great venue!

The theater itself is a spectacular renovation of the original Art Deco masterpiece.  But the production we saw last night of "Hank Williams the Lost Highway" by the Heritage Theater Group was astonishing in its awfulness.

No programs -- so we couldn't tell you who played Hank Williams -   but he was dreadful, with a shrill nasal voice and completely phony southern accent.  Ole Hank would be rolling in his grave.  The other cast members were just fine -- overacted a bit, maybe -- but the lead AURGGH!!!!!!

Avoid this theater group like the plague   But not the Uptown Theater!!!!

We are native "Napkins" and with venues like the Uptown, Lincoln Theater, Opera House, and the Mondavi Summer Concert Series, never have to go to SF for good entertainment any more (we even saw CATS at the Lincoln) .

I would normally deduct a star for insufficient womens' toilets but when you compare this venue to anywhere else in the Bay Area, the Uptown still deserve five or six stars.

Reading the remarks some folks have made about the security staff's unwillingness to take on inebriated punters, I'm not sure what the right solution is. This is Napa, they have two or more great wine bars inside the theater, they do apparently allow drinking inside the listening room with cup holders in every seat, etc etc.

I've been to five or six music shows here, and would opt for The Uptown over the Fillmore, Yoshi's, the Fox, the Independent, The Mystic, Montalvo, or the Greek for any band touring the Bay Area. This theater is that much better all around. If you don't like ticket prices online, drive up there and use their boxoffice which is a lot cheaper and quite responsive. Napa is no more than 30-40 minutes from the East Bay via I-80.

Check out Grace's Table for dinner beforehand, or The Norman Rose pub -- both safe walking distance from the venue.

Did I mention FREE safe accessible street parking after 4pm? And the fantastic sound system?

I'm updating my review because the original was recently a ROTD.  After re-reading the content I decided it needed a little more information, as I've seen a few more shows here in the past six months since my initial review (and have tickets for two or three more shows in the coming months).

Again, it's hard to beat this place for the size: no bad sight lines, great sound, courteous staff, decent prices for refreshments and conveniently located to the slowly-but-surely blossoming "nightlife" of downtown Napa.

And let me say again that the booking agent and management are top-notch, without a doubt.

If you live in the area and haven't been, you HAVE to go; it's cleaner and in better shape than the Mystic, it's in a better neighborhood with better restaurants than the Fox, and the parking and ticket prices are phenomenally better than the Fillmore.

Ok I really liked the place.  I went here to see Leo Kottke, and what a great show.  the venue was perfect for Leo, rather intimate, great sound, even the balcony seats (where I was) were really nice, and I could see and hear everything nicely.
in the entry, it was kind of small, but there was a nice wine bar (I had a glass of Silver Oak Cabernet, and it was a great blend of music, venue and wine.  Not certain how the venue would be for louder, more aggressive music, but it was great for a solo guitar act.
i think the only thing I might wish they had, was food.  if it was there, I missed it..ended up eating at Nations down the street.

We went last night to see Lisa Lampinelli live. Not only was Lisa amazing, but the facility was a lovely place!

Tonight was our second time seeing a comedy show here. We saw Lewis Black back in Sept (?) and tonight was Lisa Lampanelli. We had the same experience with this venue on both nights - terrible!

Shows started late (tonight it was 25 min!!), they BLASTED heavy metal music while you wait, and tonight the clientele were a bunch of rowdy drunks.  I've seen both comedians at Wells Fargo in Santa Rosa and the crowd never acted like this. I can't believe my hometown is so rude.

    We won't be back.

Went to see Railroad Earth on Saturday and was delighted with this new venue! The staff was so nice and let everyone dance freely in the aisles! I was nervous about going to a show here because it was seated but 75% of the crowd was roaming around dancing and having a good time. There were a few grumpy people who did not like the standing/dancing but RRE is not a sit down bluegrass band so I'm glad the employees of the Uptown could appreciate that.

    The bathrooms were very nice and there were no lines to wait in. Two reasons I did not give 5 stars;

    1. The prices of the alcohol. Beer and Wine only and $9 was the cheapest glass of wine. I know we're in Napa but please!! There were beers for $7 I think, made me feel like I was at a stadium....

    2. Price of the ticket. $42 (my friend went to the box office, they were $52 online) is a little pricey for the show. Especially since I had to get up to Napa and rent a hotel (and pay $9 for a drink).....

Loved the sound and venue tho and would definitely return!

As noted by previous reviewers, this is a beautiful little Art Deco theater with gorgeous colors, sweet staff, well-spaced comfy seats, great sight-lines, nice stage and terrific sound. Plenty of free parking within a quick walk to the venue. Kudos for booking a variety of entertainment. I sincerely hope the Greater Napa Valley community appreciates this amazing little gem. Every town should be so fortunate.

While I typically deduct a star when a great find is NOT located in the Bay Area (just the way I roll), this time I gotta call out the locals who steadily got up and walked out on the headliner (because let's face it: anyone who took the time to travel an hour or more to get there already knew what they were in for). By the end of the performance, the theater was easily half-empty. You guys missed a significant portion of a show that you probably would have loved had you just skipped the rudeness and stuck around. That having been said, while I expect I will miss your venue, I won't be missing you. Best of luck, Napa...

As a Napa newbie, I was really excited to have somewhere to go that wasn't a tasting room. With that said, we saw Margaret Cho this weekend. We found parking nearby, ate at the Norman Rose tavern, and had drinks at Morimoto. The location was soooo wonderful, much better than anything in San Francisco.

The theater itself it beautiful. The concession area is small but been restored to maintain it's Art Deco look. They have a decent wine list (no Gallo wine here) beer and cocktails which you can take in the theater. But the best part for me was the seating. I'm 4'9 and can rarely see over other people's heads, but not here. The seats are strategically placed so that no one has a bad seat. Best of all, at the end of the show, there wasn't a line for the ladies room.

    I will definitely be back

Really disappointed in the venue's security and how the Uptown's spineless ushers DID NOT react to extremely drunk fans at the Merle Haggard show.  Any decent place would have a bouncer (or more) to keep the peace. That would not only show respect for the people who paid the $70/ticket, but also show respect to the artist there to perform.
Uptown Theatre, you have worked so hard to become something extraordianry. Don't crap on your patrons and artisits! Hire security with some spine to handle the extremely drunk.  Save your venue from doom.
