I'm not sure where to start- other than to say we had high expectations as we were treating my parents to dinner to thank them for such a nice week long getaway to the Finger Lakes. My husband, parents and brother and I are all foodies. But- food alone will not sell us, we are pretty particular about service and ambiance. Â Veraisons has it all. Â I was shocked to see the average review was anything below 5 stars. Â My mom and I are vegetarians- we were immediately offered a special vegetarian menu that had been prepared for a larger private party. The entire table agreed the two vegetarian dishes were by far the most incredible vegetarian (and gluten free by the way) dishes we had ever tasted (and I lived in LA for several years where there are a plethora of gourmet vegetarian options). My brother ordered the duck and my husband the fish-- both commented on the unique preparation and tastes. My Dad ate the ravioli and said it was some of the best he has ever had. Our waitress was always there (but not in an annoying way) to refill waters, get drinks, etc. The service was impeccable. However, the scene from the large back patio was amazing. We all stated throughout the meal how delicious everything was and how beautiful the scenery was. We will absolutely be returning to this restaurant. Thank you for such a memorable evening.
Review Source:Nice restaurant at the Glenora Winery. Â My girlfriends and I had lunch outdoors overlooking Seneca Lake. Â That's a pretty good start. Â The menu had several options from salads to sandwiches for prices between 8.00 and 12.00 -- very decent prices. Â I opted for the caesar salad with flat bread topped with cheese and pesto. Â It had a suggested pairing with their Signature white wine, a blend of Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling. Â I was very satisfied with the salad and the wine combination.
Review Source:When walking into an establishment on a beautiful property with such pretty views of Lake Seneca, and upon entering a restaurant which touts itself as "fine dining," one would expect that food and service would meet certain standards expected of "fine dining." Given such expectations, we were very disappointed.
To start, my husband and I were not greeted by the hostess upon walking in. She was terribly unfriendly and seemed inconvenienced to find a table for us.
We were seated downstairs in a small dining room since there was a wedding at the time. Fine. A small disappointment, but one we could gladly overlook if the food was good.
We started with a cheese plate for 2 and a glass of wine each. Â The wine was acceptable, but not spectacular. The cheese plate featured a sharp cheddar, a goat, a bier meck, and a chive cheese spread. The cheeses were fine, but the grapes that accompanied the cheese seemed old - wrinkly and soft, overripe. There was 2 grapes that were obviously spoiled, missing parts of the peel, with white specks that looked suspiciously like mold. Gross. To their credit however, they gave us extra crackers when requested.
We each had a salad. I had the grilled flatbread Caesar salad. Â My Caesar salad was tasteless, and the dressing was thick and gloppy, and completely lacked seasoning or any flavor that resembled Caesar dressing. The grilled flatbread was a flatbread cracker smeared with pesto and covered with melted cheese, but was completely cold and soggy.
My husband had the spinach and artichoke salad, which was described as featuring fresh artichokes, sun dried tomatoes, fennel, feta, and a roasted red pepper sherry vinaigrette. The artichokes were actually poached in oil, which left them soggy and soaking with oil. Plus the artichoke hearts were not properly prepped, with layers of inedible leaves that had to be spit out. Certainly frowned upon in a fine dining restaurant. The salad itself was also soaked in oil, both from the artichokes and from the dressing, which had been added with a very heavy hand. All in all, the treatment of what may once have been fresh ingredients completely took the freshness and flavor out of the ingredients, rendering them lifeless, flavorless, and greasy.
Needless to say, we were very disappointed by our meal. Service was poor and the food was beyond lacking. It's too bad considering how beautiful the property is. We will not return in the future.
We were here for dinner on a Fri night. Service was slow. We waited for a long time before someone introduced herself and took our orders. Then it was as if time froze at our table. We saw other people seated after us receive their dishes while we were left feeling like we were on a desert island. Was it because we didn't order an appetizer?! Left to our own devices to keep our toddler entertained, the food finally arrived ONE HOUR LATER. No apologies, nothing. The waitress even hinted it was because we asked for the lamb to be well done. Right... so it's my fault. Maybe the kitchen is manned by a group of chefs in the middle of a poker game.
So to be fair the lamb was quite nice, the ravioli was ok. The cocktail was blah. They charge upmarket prices for poor service and so-so fare. This is my second bad experience here and I definitely won't be recommending this place to friends when they visit. For a better view and friendlier servers, visit Bully Hill instead.
$15 burger. Â It was a good burger. Â Not a great one. Â Certainly not a 15 buck burger.
Wife had the smoked salmon. Â Our smoked salmon that we make at home is better.
This place is a tourist trap. Â Unfortunately, there aren't many options for lunch or dinner in the area.
We won't be back.
Ok. Â I should start off by saying that I arrived expecting to not like the wine (it's a hotel/restaurant/winery) based on many reviews and other comments. Â Guess what? Â I liked the wine! Â The food was also quite good too. Â While it lacks the total detail and sophistication of a place to be found closer to a big city, Veraisons is a great place to dine while in the finger lakes region. Â
The place was totally dead. We were the last ones out at 8:30 PM. Â Who cares? Â It was like having a winery to yourself - we ate outside and it was lovely. Â Service was meh, but forgivable because of that country charm.
We started off with the cheese plate for two, all were local cheeses. Â The Camembert, goat cheese and sharp cheddar were delicious. Â The plate was served with local grapes (it's harvest time), which was a lovely touch. Â This was served with their 2010 chardonnay. Â
Next we had the special of the day, stuffed calamari with beef, rosemary and oregano. Â I was expecting the calamari to be rubbery, but again, I was happily surprised - perfectly cooked, tender, and delicious. Â This was served with the 2010 dry riesling which I was not too keen on, but still the dish was very good.
For the main course I had the lamb kebabs (again, local fare). Â Lamb was a little over-cooked, but otherwise was very tasty with some rice, grilled veggies and mint sauce. Â It paired GREAT with their 2009 Syrah. Â My better half liked his pairing better, but I love syrah and while on the lighter side, this was perfect with the lamb since it was local and so tender and mild - no need to fight the normally stronger lamb taste.
The BF had the ribeye steak, which came with mashed potatoes and seasonal veggies (again, local!!!) Â His pairing was the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon. Â Delicious. Â We both left too full to eat dessert, and very happy. Â We'll be coming back to pick up some of these wines on our way out. Â
Here's to being happily disappointed! Â Definitely recommend. Â All of this local fare makes me miss living in this part of the country!
Veraisons is an upscale restaurant situated in the Inn at Glenora which sits just behind the tasting room. Â It has a great view overlooking the vineyard and a sloping hill that leads down to Seneca lake. Â The chef here tries to focus on local produce and meats and this can easily be seen by some of the dishes on the menu.
When we went, Veraisons was having a special for couples that included an appetizer, two entrees, and a dessert for $50 off a select menu. Â Considering that most of the entrees are at least $25, this deal was essentially getting us an appetizer and dessert for free. Â We had the pork empanadas, shrimp & scallop mousse filled ravioli, chipotle marinated flank steak, and chess pie for dessert. Â We also ordered another appetizer: crab cake.
The appetizers were pretty good. Â The pork empanadas consisted of two large deep-fried pastries filled with well-seasoned ground pork. Â They were a little too greasy and I thought the filling could have been more interesting. Â The crab cake was very tasty with very little filler that was appreciated.
The shrimp & scallop mousse ravioli were great. Â They came in a vodka sauce that was good enough to sop up with bread. Â The flank steak was perfectly cooked medium rare but could have used more char on the outside.
I'm not much of a dessert person but the chess pie was tasty and incredibly sweet. Â If that's your thing, you'll love it I'm sure.
If we lived closer, I'd probably take advantage of this special more often.
I ate at the Veraisons restaurant while staying at the Glenora Inn about five times.
Two of those meals were lunch, once was the wedding dinner (catered by the restaurant manager), one meal was the wedding brunch (also catered) and one meal was the restaurant breakfast.
For lunch, the restaurant was perfectly fine; one lunch was a combination of salad and sandwich - the salad was an arugula salad with poached pear and that was fine, the sandwich was a bit dry over toasted. The second lunch was a crabcake salad - the crabcake was a bit fishy, but the sides it came with were acceptable.
For the dinner we had, it was the wedding dinner, so it was catered. The salads and appetizers were nice, especially the scallops and risotto balls, but my main dish of salmon was a bit overdone and dry and was lacking in the vegetables and sides. The other choices were chicken, vegetarian and beef and the chicken and beef seemed to be OK.
For breakfast, the catered option seemed best. It was fruit salad, scrambled eggs, French toast, sausage, bacon and potatoes on the side. This was a definite improvement over the Continental breakfast of oatmeal, granola, dry baked goods and over ripened fruit. I would not feel so upset about the regular breakfast expect that the strawberries I had on my first morning there definitely had mold spots on them and that definitely put me off of the restaurant.
I recommend the restaurant at the hotel for lunch, but for dinner, maybe try the recommended other hotels/ restaurants in the Dundee/ Glenora/ Watkins Glen area.
