You must visit this Wine Bar!!!
My new bride and i stopped on our way back from Honeymooning in S.F....one flight,
a plate of specialty cheeses and an education from the" Director of First Impressions"
Tania and we are calling this our must go to destination...
No wonder they call San Luis a Happy Place:)
Vintage wine bar is a rustic and cozy wine bar just outside the heart of downtown SLO. I liked the atmosphere because you can just stop in for a glass of wine or meet girlfriends or coworkers there for a business meeting as well! Great selection of unique wines and AMAZING cheese selection! This rivals New Frontiers for gourmet, purchase-able cheeses. Definitely looking forward to my next visit!
Review Source:Great customer service here, they made me feel very welcome. Â It is very chill and relaxing here. Â Everyone that I have met here is very nice. Â Tonia is the best and enjoyable to talk to. Â If you don't like wine they have a great, unique selection of beers. Â They have wonderful cheeses which I bought some to take home. Â There is so much I have not tried here, they have some yummy looking food on the menu that I am sure to try.
Review Source:Vintage 1255 is a great place to try out some of our excellent coastal wines. Â The staff is helpful and knowledgeable and definitely willing to get to know you and serve. Once they understand your preferences they are able to make recommendations which hit the mark.
Great selection of local wines and they are now offering some brews. I don't drink much beer so I can't comment on them.
Nice cheese case and they make a nice little cheese plate with fruit and bread. Great portions for the price. It does take them a while to make a cheese plate and they could improve the offerings a bit but all in all it's a nice plate.
I've driven by this place so many times and never noticed that it was there! A friend and I went in on a weeknight and we were literally the only people there for the entire hour and half we were there!
Polite service, great wine, and a yummy cheese platter. It was about $10 for the single cheese/grapes plate...It was a great place to go with friends for a snack!
Good selection and I enjoyed sharing a few bottles between friends. It's a great place to meet friends--I called ahead to make sure they could accommodate our group and they promised to have a table ready for us. You can taste by the glass but I suggest just getting a bottle and splitting it if you have a large group.
Review Source:Don't go here  I have never been in a place I have felt less welcome.  They really want you to leave.  Don't ask what wine you are tasting...too much trouble...read what is on the label when they hand you the bottle.
This place is only a few blocks from my house and I thought, "how nice to have a cozy little wine bar close to home on an evenings stroll". Â Silly me! Â It made me want to go home on the run with my tail between my legs and to brood about what might be really wrong with me and my life.
Unless you want to spend an evening where eating worms was your only other option I would suggest making another choice
.
Ever since ownership changed I have not liked this place. The owner is rude. This is the only place I am aware of with such a selection of cheese which is the only reason I still go. After today I will be searching hard for another place near by with cheese selections. I used to love coming here on Fridays for the wine and cheese pairing - not any longer. Again - owner is awful. And what is this silly time?! Opens at ONE-THIRTY?! What about those of us on lunch that are running errands? And he dared to give me a dirty look when I tried to open the door that was locked. Don't support this man's business.
Review Source:I've visited wine bars all over the world and this has to be one of my favorites. The staff is knowledgable and always helpful. The wines are all local and the offerings changes frequently so you almost get to try something new. The staff also seems to know alot about the local wine industry and they're always willing to help out with questions or advise. Oh - and their cheese plates are out of this world.
Review Source:No wonder why this place was empty on a weekend afternoon! That should have been my first clue to turn around and run the other way... but I'll admit, I was lured in by the nice cheese selection.
We sat at the bar to do some wine tasting with our cheese selection and that's where it all went wrong. The owner couldn't have made us feel more un-welcomed. I ordered a tasting flight of 3 wines for $5- to which the owner replied "Let me give you a little tip, if you order a full glass, you'll save money". Â I explained, I was more interested in sampling a few different varietals of local wines than saving money. He smirked.
I noticed that there were a few more bottles of red wine on the bar than listed on the menu, and so I asked what kind of white wine he had available. He said, " What does it say on the menu?" and then proceeded to pull out 4 bottles (one of which was not on the menu).
When I asked what the difference was between 2 Chardonnays being poured, he replied, "taste". Â Wow. Never got that answer before. He just couldn't be bothered! Â I prodded..." well, kind of oak is used???" He said "French- so it'll be more sweet". Â Wow- again. Never heard that one either. Â But after one sip, "stale" would have been a more accurate description. Â
I asked to move on to the next pour- to which he had some more advice for me... to get the most bang out of my $5, I should just pick the most expensive wine to try. And, he added, "more $$$= better wine". Â I disagreed with that blanket statement, telling him I've had some very good wine in the $10-$20 range and on the flip-side, some terrible expensive wine. Then he had the audacity to ask me how many $40 wines I've tasted in my life?! Â A LOT, thank you very much.
Wine Spectator mobile to the rescue, I quickly do a rating search on the 2 wines in front of me, $38 Flying Goat Pinot / $13 Barrel 27 White blend.... and announce the findings. Same mediocre score.
This is the first time I've encountered a wine shop owner who had 0 passion for wine- and a true gift of insulting customers. Worst wine experience ever. Â
If you must, only go there for the cheese.
This place really is a gem. Â I'm not a wine connoisseur, but cheese YES PLEASE.
They have 25 cheeses or so in a refrigerated case (some from Cowgirl Creamery (so fresh and so good)) right as you walk in. Â I can't wait to try them all. Â So far my favorite cheeses there are the Midnight Moon, like the reviewer before me, and the Abbeye de Belloc, and the Manchego. Â They run about $22-25 per pound. Â So get a half pound and some Tolosa 2005 Pinot and you are SET for the night.
Oh, yes. Â And unless you like lindburger cheese, beware the RED HAWK! Â Yes, I know Cowgirl makes it. Â But just say NO.
I never noticed this place before and decided out of the blue to check it out after a HORRID meal from a-place-that-will-not-be-named. Â Thank the Lord we found this place or else my stomach and mood would have been pretty much tarnished for the night.
My boyfriend and I tasted three different wines (Italian Pinot Grigio and two different Cabernet Sauvignons from California) for $5. Â The man working there was extremely friendly, knowledgeable about the wines and suggested an amazing pairing with our favorite of the three (2004 Cabernet Sauvignon from Chateau Margene in Paso Robles). Â He had us try the cab with a "Midnight Moon Goat Holland" cheese. Â Oh my goodness, it was so delicious that my body was reacting by dancing but at the same time trying to contain myself so as not to look like a fool.
The tasting, wine, and cheese were not cheap and my wallet felt empty. Â Because the man working there knew we were both college students, he did not even allow me to give him a tip when I wanted to! Â We told him we would be back again when we have more money (and we SHALL return and we will give him a fatty tip whether he lets us or not!) Â
P.S. Â Monterey Street Wine Company also has a small selection of decent beers and sakes.
