The service here was terribly slow. It took over half an hour to get our food, which was simple stuff. A salad and a burger.
The burger was ordered medium rare, but delivered "well done". The server was flitting from table to table and clearly disorganized. After we finished our extraordinarily mediocre meal, we had to wait a very long time just to pay.
I would never go here again.
This review is a bit late, a couple months ago. I was there for lunch, in the bar area. I sat on a rickety chart at a wobbly table. A bit untidy- floor / corner areas. The service was slow and not so attentive. I had the crab cake sandwich which was OK. On the "crab cake sandwich" scale, I peg it at a 5. Nice view of the river though and nice outside area with bar. I think the location is what keeps this place going.
Review Source:Food is good but service is slow. Waited an hour to get food. Then waited almost an hour for our check. Also have had several problems when making reservations in advance. Made a reservation for a large group. Person who took it didn't write it in the book. Had problem two more times with making reservations in advance. Suggest if you want to make a reservation for a group to talk to.the manager only.
Review Source:From multiple visits, mostly Fall 2011.
The website WRONGLY says that Lunch ends and Dinner begins at 4:00 PM, they have yet to change it after being told over a year ago. This did impact my one visit with family as I was counting on ordering from the dinner menu. The appetizers and the House, Stilton and Spinach Salads are the only vegetarian offerings on the lunch menu. Although they are fine and the entrée sized salads are generous, I really wanted to try the Greek Pasta on the dinner menu.
Sadly, the downstairs bar and its worn floor keep the cute interior of the main dining area smelling like stale beer. If the downstairs is starting to get full, make sure to ask to sit upstairs. The view is even better because you don't have to look through the furniture on the deck and it looks down onto the Juniata, quite pleasant in any season.
Just a brief visit. Â Beautiful setting, looking over the river. Â Wait staff were nice and friendly. Â Our artichoke dip was good and came out fast. Â A real bonus is they are serving beer from a new, local company, the Drunken Monkey. Â Only a couple on tap, but the blond ale was tasty.
Review Source:We were here visiting family and after reading the other reviews we had high hopes. Apparently too high. The wait staff was inattentive, not one refill on my beverage in almost two hours. And we weren't there for so long because of the pleasant atmosphere. Almost an hour for our meals to be served after apps/salads were done. And they didn't take that time to get it right. My husbands burger was cooked to hocky puck status (they did take half off even though he sent almost all of it back), my son's pasta was greasy and covered in vinegar and my chicken was obviously frozen and watery. For over 15$ on just my dish I didn't expect frozen, skinless, boneless chicken like you find in the cheap bulk bag of the grocery store. Definately a disappointment for our first time visiting the area. It might be an ok bar, but I'd rather hit a McDonald's to eat before hand.
Review Source:I have to admit, definitely the best food in town of maybe 6 restaurants that are not chains. Â It was pretty good, not terrible or spectacular. Â
Artichoke spinach dip was alright. Â You do miss the flavors of the artichokes and spinach mixed in with the heavy cheese. Â Wasn't bad. Â Burgers were pretty solid. Â Wanted to try the Cesar salad, but it never showed up.
I will just leave my comment about the greenhorn waiter at that.
Being from Lewistown, I've always loved the Waterfront. They have the best burger in town. I also had the duck once and it was fabulous. If you want a classier dining experience, make sure you request to be seated upstairs. The downstairs is more of a bar atmosphere. It's also really great to sit on the deck when it is warm out. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the last time I ate there I got pasta and it hadn't seemed to be cooked long enough.
Review Source:Lucky us, my husband and I happened upon this little gem on the way back from a Penn State road trip. Wow. We had lunch, and while it was a little pricey for lunch- the food quality made it well worth it. Â Being a rainy day, we both opted for hot entrees rather than burgers or sandwiches. Â The menu selection was excellent. Â We enjoyed the spinach and artichoke dip, a salmon entree and a crab cake entree. Â All were delicious! I can only imagine how nice this place must be on a sunny day outdoors by the water. Â
We will be back!
Excellent food, unparalleled within an hour radius of Middleburg.
I had the filet and was very happy to be eating well prepared food in Central Pennsylvania.
Nice atmosphere and good service make this a complete win in my opinion.
I also want to note this is about mid-way between Middleburg and State College and therefore a perfect place to meet up.
Finally! Haaaaa lay lu yah. Lewistown has a decent place to go out to and a waterfront option that takes advantage of the gorgeous Juniata River.
I was skeptical at first, because I hadn't been to the waterfront or anywhere in Lewistown for a decade and expectations were low, really low. But, from the menu selection, wine list (seriously!), view, service and prices the waterfront really delivered. The salads were fresh and nicely dressed. Burgers moist and lean. Fish was fresh and delicate. The menu features a bit of something for every palate.
The club soda in my first cocktail was totally flat, but I was so content didn't even mention it. Sure that our friendly server would have fixed it up. Looking forward to going back and trying more items in the future, while watching the sunset over the river.
If you drive south on Route 322 through Lewistown, you can't miss it. Not the restaurant. You can't miss the huge mural painted on the side of a house advertising the Waterfront Tavern - just an exit or two farther on. The mural looks so appealing, especially since it was refreshed recently, that you find yourself saying each time you pass it: "I've got to check this place out."
Last year, I finally did because I had a meeting in Burnham, just north of of Lewistown, and we needed a place to eat afterward. Â So I checked out the website and the menu on the website. It looked great - with items for all sorts of tastes . . . well, except vegetarians and certainly vegans. It assumes that vegetarians are taken care of by giving them dishes with lots of cheese - a common assumption but not a healthy one.
Their website lets you email the chef, so I did.
And he called me and told me they are more than willing to make dishes to order.
We had a great dinner at the restaurant as a result. Everyone loved their food. They carry local beers and fit into a category of restaurants springing up all over central PA - and other places too, several of which I've reviewed. Attention to flavor, some inventiveness - but not way out there craziness , and support for local foods and beers.
Here's what they say on their website:
" The Waterfront Tavern is striving to meet the higher expectations of food quality and service that Central Pennsylvanians deserve. Fresh fish and pasta sauces, aged prime beef, all served in a tranquil setting by a group of dedicated people that sincerely want to enhance your dining experience is our daily regiment.
Central Pennsylvania is changing and the Waterfront Tavern embraces this change by continuing to raise the standards that are typically only found in large metropolitan areas. We appreciate your support !"
On a return trip, with other people, we had the same experience.
The Waterfront Tavern sits beside the Juniata river and has a covered porch that lets you eat outdoors. Â You can also get that view from the upstairs dining room.
By the way, there is a decent natural foods store in the next block in case you need to pick something up.
