This is the main restaurant/bar at the base of Big Sky ski resort. We always end up here for a few meals throughout our stay. The food is good and the service is decent (I usually don't expect to much at ski hills as the staff turnover rate is usually high). Prices are what you'd expect to pay at a ski resort, but not ridiculous - expect to pay $10-$15 for lunch (good sized portions). It gets pretty busy around mealtimes, so plan accordingly.
Review Source:My husband and I stopped in here twice on our 3 day trip to Big Sky, once for lunch and another time for drinks.
1. Food is ok. We both had the carnitas burrito topped with enchilada sauce. I asked for extra fajita vegetables in mine and was told it already came with peppers. My burrito arrived with no peppers inside.
2. Want a great hot drink? Have their apple pie!
3. Service for lunch was good. When there at night, our server ignored us. All we wanted was a few drinks and dessert! We went through the bartender instead and she was very helpful.
Ever go to a ski resort and want to grab a quick lunch only to find that the restaurant immediately available to you is a cafeteria with frozen pizza and hockey puck hamburgers? Well my friend, you can wake up from your nightmare now.
Whiskey Jack's is a short walk from the lifts and serves some pretty amazing south western cuisine. The drinks were excellent, the ambience.... NOT a cafeteria... the bison quesadillas, REDONK. Service was excellent as well. Truth be told, this place was so good, we went for lunch all 3 days we were on the slopes. Why mess w/ a good thing?
I was going to say, "Well, at least we didn't get sick," but my gut still isn't sure about that.
Whiskey Jack's food is resort grub at its grubbiest. Sure, you can play some video poker while you're there, but here's a game that's just as fun: order the fajitas and try to decipher what animal, what cut, and what preparation produced those protein nuggets before you.
Good times, if you drink lots of whiskey.
You know those places where you go by default? Â Insert Whiskey Jack's. Â Want appetizers? Â Not here. Â Interested in friendly bar service? Â Go elsewhere, except there is no elsewhere. Â That's an exaggeration but your choices are limited. Â You'll inevitably end up at Whiskey Jack's but don't say I didn't warn you.
Review Source:Although the food as Whiskey Jack's is mediocre, at least it costs less than at many similarly mediocre places at Big Sky. I got the Bison Quesadilla for lunch, and it was good -- flavorful. The service was good too, especially since the place was packed full when we went. Not much more to say, since that's all I got here!
Review Source:So ... the food was mediocre. The beer was warm. My real issue is with the management of the place. Twice I've gone there (after a day up at Big Sky ... not a ton of options) for some bar food and beer. Both times the staff began to break down the restaurant for a band while we were eating. Not a big deal ... a little distracting having to dodge chairs and tables moving all over the place. No, the big deal is that on both occasions they did not let anyone come into the restaurant a couple of hours before the band. We intended on staying for the band, but it was strange as the whole place emptied out. Finally, after spending over $150, a bouncer came over and told us that we needed to each pay $8 to stick for the band. I couldn't believe it. Do they realize that if they would have kept people in the place for the 2 hours they were clearing it out, they would have made WAY more than the $8 for the cover. I've worked in restaurants and bars for years. I've never seen a more chaotic and poorly managed (I'm talking about management philosophy ... the staff was quite well trained and moved quickly). I will not be back and will actively encourage people to go elsewhere when up at Big Sky.
Review Source:I was pleasantly surprised at the food here! Â Given that it's the primary stop for grinds at the bottom of the lifts, I figured it might just be mediocre. Â But I was shocked that the cheese steak was fantastic! Â We went here for dinner one night with our group of 6 and we all loved our dishes, especially the tortilla soup. Â Portions were humongous and I split the cheese steak and the southwest cesar salad and both were great. Â I also had the watermelon margarita and thoroughly enjoyed it after a day on the mountain. Â We're definitely coming back here next year!
Review Source:I don't know how many times I have stumbled into Whiskey Jack's in my ski boots over the years, but I do know how satisfied I have always stumbled out. Â Whiskey Jack's can give you a wide range of portions and that is a wonderful thing in the skiing world. Â I don't know how many times I have been to Whiskey Jacks, but I'm sure I will be dining and drinking there many more times.
Review Source:After a full day on the powder (and falling all over it learning to ski!) nothing tastes as good as a shared plate of Mile-High Nachos and a cold draft Moose Drool ale. We found the service to be great! A lively place when the lifts close, as they have apres-ski.
Its at the base of the slopes and you can just walk in with ski boots on, looking a snowy mess, and feel warm and right at home.
While we were in Big Sky all last week we stopped in Whiskey Jack's at least 3 times. Â Not because it was that great but because there isn't much else to choose from in the resort area. Â The first night we had the mile high nachos which were pretty good. Â Not that best I have ever had but would get again. Â Also I had the west palm margarita or something like that. Â I asked Jill the waitress our first night for better tequilla since it comes with cuervo which she said of course. Â She didn't even charge me for the upgrade which was nice. Â She was our best server of the entire trip. Â The service definitely got worse after her. Â
We went in again to try and watch the Illini game, being that we were there during March Madness. Â We ending up finding it on at Whiskey Jacks after we went to 2 other bars that didn't have the channel (disappointing considering it was TBS). Â We watched the game there and it was fun until another couple asked to change the channel and they obliged even though we were there watching first!!! Â Again I got that same margarita and this time it was $14 instead of $6.50. Â The third time we went the same drink was $12.50. Â So its obvious that they arbitrarily charge customers whatever they like. Â
The food is a bit above average and the drinks are good albeit very expensive.  Probably what is charged in Chicago.  But that is how all the bars in BIg Sky resort area were.  Whiskey Jacks is great for the location since its slopeside and is the biggest sports bar there.  It was a fun time but the service and prices could have been much  better!  Room for improvement for sure.
We just finished eating dinner here on our first night in big sky. Â I was starving and this was the first place we saw as we were trying get familiarized with the resort. Â Â Here's what we had:
1) buffalo wings: Â Tangy, spicy and pretty tasty. It was the best dish of the night. - Â 3.5 stars
2) "award winning" chili: I don't know what kind of award this won, but this was not chili that I am used to. Â I was expecting a nice hot bowl of hearty chili with bold spices, instead what I got was more of a thin, black bean soup with chunks of beef in it. I think this would've tasted better if it were called a different name. - 2 stars.
3) side green salad: the mixed greens were really fresh and crisp. The ranch dressing they serve here is one of the best I've ever had - 5 stars for the ranch dressing!
4) lomo saltado: this is a Peruvian dish that is kind of like Latin stir fry consisting of beef, onions, bell peppers, and fried potatoes in a rich, bold and spicy sauce.  What they served here was a disgraceful version of this Peruvian staple.  When you  put a label on a dish i have certain expectations and my taste buds expect a certain experience.  This was not a lomo saltado dish.  Again, if they called this by a different name, I would have enjoyed it more.
Alas, I left unsatisfied and disappointed.
I might return here to have a salad and try their mile high nachos that the table next to us was eating. It looked delicious.
At the base of the ski mountain we found 3 options of places to eat and this is the mid range one. Â There is a cafeteria on the floor above Whiskey Jacks and a nicer restaurant (Peaks) in the building next door. Â Whiskey Jacks is basically a large sports bar/ restaurant. Â
I tried their burger once and it was pretty good and I tried their chili verde once and it was ok. Â The service was spotty but that is to be expected at a ski mountain because often times the servers and waiters are much more concerned if the next day is going to be a powder day or not then if you have silverware or if your water glass is empty. Â The location is great and in the middle of the base area. Â It is a very good meeting spot, has pretty good food, and has decent prices for being at a mountain base. Â
We didn't make is there for apres ski but it is definitely located as and has the feel of what should be the best apres ski option on the mountain.
BEST FOOD in the Big Sky area in my opinion. The good is GREAT! I personally had the Bison Quesadilla which was very crunchy and tastefull. It was filled with bison meat, cheese, green bell peppers and topped with a nice pico de gallo sauce. The Snapper Sandwich is also great. The food is not to spicy and not to greasy. Have kids? no problem, Whiskey Jack's have a number of options for your child to choose from. The Grilled Cheese sandwich was the best. The bread is crunchy with the cheese all nice and melty on the inside. The side fries are the best that I have tasted here in Montana. The atmosphere was awesome ,a nice view of the mountains that surround you. Great customer service. The waiter GREG was so cool and down to earth.
If you are ever in Big Sky, Montana, Whiskey Jack's is the place to go!
Walking in at the end of a day on the slopes, as your boots crunch on the ice and your muscles complain of use and abuse, Whiskey Jacks beckons with the live music of vagabond cowboys and the promise of liquid sustenance.
Couldn't bring myself to order a Makers-and-Coke at a Jack Daniels bar, but that said, the Moose Drool more than compensated. High tables and low tables offer diners the opportunity to wax poetic about their daring exploits on the ice, even as they consume copious amounts of nachos. Kudos to Dana L. for expediting the service by grabbing our own extra chips!
The service was hit-and-miss with many of the employees providing the whole "I'm a ski bum and only work here to afford the lift ticket" experience to the customers. Unimpressive service from some, dedicated from others. The hot chocolate is excellent - but I suspect that may have more to do with the venue.
