In the restaurant, I really love the Italian chicken sandwich, but the really great stuff is the bar. The drinks are wonderful and reasonably priced, and the fried cheese cubes are possibly the best substance on Earth!

The first time we went, I got the chicken Kreps that was highly recommended and was really disappointed. It was salty , fried and was not worth the price. My boyfriend got a blackened steak that looked and tasted like the cook tripped with the seasoning in his hand and dumped the entire bottle on the steak.

Months later we decided to give it a second try and once again, was deeply disappointed. I got the seafood linguine which was okay, but it had imitation crab, and what seemed to be canned clams. I've made better.

My boyfriend got the beef stuff ravioli. It was deep fried, covered in cheese and tasted like it was frozen and then microwaved.

    I wouldn't recommend it.

    Two words: Chicken Kreps

We didn't go into the bar, opting to sit in a quieter-looking area with a window right by the sidewalk.

I'm very critical of where/what I eat, and I had an excellent time at the Wooden Nickel (Summer 2009). I often think about going back to Kirksville just to try it again.

    Restaurant:

The service here is ALWAYS awful. I have been to the restaurant four times now and have never had a good, or even ok, server. One time, my group was the only table there, and it took over 15 minutes for the waitress to bring us our drinks (there were only 4 of us at the table...). Another time, the waitress lost our order and we waited for over an hour and a half for our food.

The food is overpriced for the quality. I refuse to go to the restaurant portion anymore.

    Bar:

I've only been to the bar a few times. The bartenders are great and the drinks aren't too expensive. The bar food tastes exactly how you would expect - greasy, but I'm not complaining.

I recommend the KC BBQ steak sandwich with a pint of Sierra Nevada on the deck.  Or get the sampler of appetizers, it has things like cheese sticks, mini tacos, stuffed mushrooms, fried ravioli's, etc.

Woody's: -Full bar with daily specials and happy hour
-3 TV's upstairs usually playing sports games and the weather
                   - background blues music till 10pm
-Only bar in town that carries Sierra Nevada Beer(important to me)
-Plenty of selections for finger food and an extensive menu that usually consists of a salad, bread sticks, pasta(or alt. side dish) and the entree.
-Only place downtown with outdoor seating and around 6-8pm there's an awesome sunset over the tree line of Thousand Hills Park
                  - Bar Seating as well as large group tables, they can accommodate everyone
                  - the basement has 2 pool tables, a jukebox, fooseball, beer-pong, and 2 TV's.
-the owner is frequently there chatting it up, and the staff are good people
-occasionally there is live music at the bar

My favorite place to go out in Kirksville.

I've been to Wooden Nickel, or affectionately: Woody's, for many events. I've been there for a birthday dinner, on a casual date and for their Trivia and All-You-Can-Drink specials on Wednesday nights. Overall, it's a pretty cool place to hang out, but unless you're craving greasy, deep-fried food, I wouldn't recommend it. What I mean is, don't go here expecting a yummy sit down dinner, but it is two-thumbs up if you've been drinking and have the munchies. The bartenders are super nice and the over all ambiance is pretty nice. Check out the roof.

Woody's is the bar located in the back of The Wooden Nickel restaurant.   I've decided to list this as a separate entry since the bar has a separate entrance and  I have only been to the bar and not to the restaurant.

My friend and I are from out of town and were passing through when we found Woody's.   It had just opened and we were the first customers of the day.    In fact the bartender hadn't even arrived yet, but the owner cheerfully stepped away from his other duties to take care of us and even stuck around during the entire duration of our stay to chat with us.

We had both ordered premium beers, and he charged us less than $2 each.   "I just own the place, I have no idea how much this stuff costs," he said with a laugh after we questioned him to make sure he was charging us right.

So, I don't know what this bar is like later when it's busy, but my visit was great so it gets 4 stars from me.

Personally this place only taste good after happy hour.  The pasta is awful and always over cooked.  The services is not bad and really has that small town feel to it.  The sandwiches are the only thing I would eat here and even at that don't have high expectations.  Again stay away from the pasta, I have had better at buffets.

Mediocre food and mediocre service.  It's cheap pasta that is over priced.  I wouldn't recommend it.

I only went there a couple times, but each time it was good for me. Not everyone in my party was so enthusiastic. I'd caution anyone against ordering the chicken parm. BUT.  Recently I got their BBQ beef. It was oh-so tender. Deliciously sauce. Yummy flavor. I went there during lunch, so I expected that it was probably microwaved, but it was still delicious. The spumoni ice cream dessert was standard and extremely over priced. Its been a local favorite for years now, and its probably one of the better high end american food places in town.

An odd barbecue-Italian food combination. Everything tastes like it was prepared well-ahead and warmed in a microwave before serving. The smoked meats are fine, but microwaving them makes them lose their texture. The bbq sauce leaves something to be desired. On the other hand, the collection of Native American artifacts displayed in the dining room will impress even the most jaded arrowhead hunter.
