I hate to admit it, but I went to this bar every other weekend while I was a student at Georgia Southern.  When I first started going to school there the bar was decent.  After I left though I constantly heard rumors that the bar was getting into all sorts of trouble with the city, and was on the fast track to closing down.  It just recently reopened to my amazement after being shut down for 2 years.

Around 3-4 years ago this place was great.  The Nikel had this one band, whose name escapes me, that would cover great songs from the 80's cover for a majority of the night.  Other bands that performed there on a regular basis were pretty good to, at least for a bar rooted so deeply in the south.  It was arguably one of the best night life scenes in the city.

A year later the place was starting to become something that drove off a majority of their loyal customers.  They would host these stupid dance parties where drunk GSU students would embarrassingly dance the night away like they were in some kind of club or something.  It ruined my whole opinion about the place.

Here are some of the self-destructing qualities that went into the design of this popularity declining nightlife spot in Statesboro:

    1) The title of the bar was purposely misspelled so that it would make freshman at GSU giggle the first time they saw the place.  I get it, you misspelled the name of the bar so it would look like a simple good ole' boy created the sign at the front.  Hilarious.

    2) The bar was founded by Ace Amerson.  Most people who watch MTV and attended or are currently attending  GSU know him as "Ace from the Real World."  Was kind of neat when he was initially on the show 4 years ago, but now the legend of Ace has become sad.  He seems to be milking his 15 minutes of fame for all that it is worth opening up various bars around Georgia and hanging out with the locals every now and then to create a buzz with his questionable celebrity appeal.

    3) They had guys that would walk around with a backpack that looked similar to the one pest control guys used to spray down a house.  Inside that backpack was liquor. Of course the main purpose of the liquor backpack was to spray the liquor into a customer's mouth on select nights.  That selected customer would usually be a female, from what I remember.  Also, if the reports in the AJC were true, that female was most likely underage or of appropriate age, but allowed to become severely intoxicated.  This is nobodies fault but the staff at the Nikel.  You are digging your own grave if you fail monitor regulate how much a customer has been drinking on a particular night.  This was the nail in the coffin of bad ideas for the woodin nikel.

Hopefully the managers and owners get their act together and figure out how to get the bar back to the way it was 3-4 years ago.
