The top go to place in Stockton to grab a drink. Â
I enjoy this place for its quality beers, the fries, Â as well as most of the bartender's are pretty knowledgeable about the beers they serve. Â The pub is small, so it doesn't get rowdy or loud like other Stockton places do and you get to know the bartender. Good place to hang out, relax, and have a drink. Â The only negatives would be their frog legs------they were very dry when I last ordered them.
This is a cozy, friendly pub on the Miracle Mile. The beer selection is absolutely amazing. The bartender there knows his stuff. The food exceeded my expectations considerably. I had the fish and chips and my companion had a burger. When you go, however, know that you need to order your ketchup when you order your food. There is a list of available sauces on the back of the menu. The slaw that came with my fish and chips was a pleasant surprise. Instead of being an afterthought and plate-filler it was this bright, lively cabbage salad with vinaigrette, cilantro, and green onions. The fish was PERFECT, tender inside, crispy beer batter outside. They could've gone the mediocre frozen mass-produced food service route, but NO!
You've gotta love a place where the management appreciates their opportunity to provide great beer, amazing food, and a friendly neighborhood gathering spot atmosphere.
This is a gem. We're so happy we discovered it. We'll be back without a doubt.
This is one of my favorite places in Stockton and I kind of wish they had an equivalent in Sacramento. I mean yea, we have Pangaea and some other awesome places, but this place has its own charm. Â
I like how it's small and cozy and, get this: the beertenders are actually knowledgeable about beer!
The food is spectacular, especially their fries. I was also tremendously impressed by  a salad I had here. I think it was spinach? I don't know, but it had candied walnuts and it was excellent. Also, sriracha ketchup. Brilliant. That alone deserves 5 stars. Why is that not a more common thing?
The beer can be a little pricey, but it's very good beer and usually has a high alcohol content. Choose wisely and you can be well on your way to a strong buzz with merely two pints.
Very small, European style bar. There's obviously a focus on Belgian beer and food but the 6-tap selection doesn't always represent that. Diverse bottle selection means that nearly every type of beer is available but they can get pricey. The burger was excellent as well as the Belgian style fries. Chicken sandwich and sausage plates are also delicious. They order their sausages previously from Wolfsen's in Gustine and now apparently from Fagundes in Manteca.
One commenter said that the place had gone down hill somewhat. I'm inclined to agree but not sure why; the original owner seemed to really care. Either way, as far as I know there's nothing really like it in San Joaquin or Stanislaus. I will say that for this type of establishment, it's important to have plenty of options and knowledgeable staff and they seem to be doing so-so in this department.
Good times. This place is full of them.
Whether you're having a beer with some friends or coming to try your wits at trivia night, The Abbey is a great gem for the Miracle Mile and I love coming here when I'm home. They've got a great selection of beers and some good eats too. I really liked their chicken artichoke sandwich and you can't go wrong with all of their dipping sauces for the french fries.
My absolute favorite restaurant in the valley and my favorite pub in California. The drink selection is fantastic and the atmosphere is simple and superb. Be careful on weekends it fills up quick!! The food is a taste all it's own. They somehow intensify homemade dishes while keeping the simplicity that's so appealing to them, each piece is full of flavor and fresh ingredients you can tell it comes straight from market to saucepan to your plate! And dont get me started on their homemade sauces that only add icing to the cuisine cake! I will never tire of the brilliance of this place and I encourage EVERYONE to take a taste of The Abbey!
Review Source:This is my go-to spot if I want to be around good people and a relaxing atmosphere. The beertenders are on the spot, knowledgeable, and friendly. I love that they have PBR in a can. For some reason, the PBR brings out the flavor of their french fries so much more. Maybe its just me but I order it all the time. They should name a combo after me that comes with PBR and a small order of fries. Seriously! Check this place out for Pint Night and/or Trivia Night for a great time amongst really relaxed people.
Review Source:This place is our go to spot on a Friday night for fish tacos or even during the week for some down time. Â Small and cozy with a fantastic selection of dark beers which are my guys fave...the bar tenders are always knowledgable and friendly...The only sad part is when they run out of Young's Double Chocolate Stout...but they make up for it generally with good advice on other options.
Review Source:I think it has lost its charm.
Beer is getting expensive.
Workers aren't as friendly. Â
They aren't very knowledgeable/helpful with beer selection.
One of the bartenders seemed annoyed when I asked for suggestions. Â The previous ones would have been happy to help.
Blah.
What happened?
My favorite pub in the area. Oyster nights (Tues) are great, and there's always a Belgian on tap. Â The steak sandwich is awesome, and they've gotten new bread (though I liked the Dutch Crunch, my wife said it was too tough.) Â Frogs legs were ok, but the fries are great and the salad was huge. TAKE MY MONEY
Review Source:We have been to the Abbey several times for the fish and chips it has always been great. We went last Sunday and were totally disappointed at the quality of this dish, The fish was greasy and the chips were lukewarm and soggy girl that was running the bar was more interested in talking to the guys at the bar than checking on our lunch. I'm sorry Abbey we have to kick you to the curb and find another place for fish and chips.
Review Source:I only come here for the steak sandwich with garlic sauce and French fries with MANGo ketchup, who thinks of this ***!!!!! Simply amazzzingggggG. I heard if you act a fool up in there you get banned for a 1000 years. If Yoda got banned from there when he was 21, he could probably go back there right about now.
Review Source:If you're looking for a laid-back place to drink some quality craft beers and grub on some simple and good food, you've found the place. The Abbey has a wide-range of beers available from several countries. Chocolate stouts? Check. Cherry flavored brews? Check. Their drink menu also offers wines from local and foreign makers. Obviously, quality comes at a price. I took one star off because there's a lack of options under $5, and sometimes you're on a budget as a student.
As far as "The Eats," you'll find a nice selection of fries, burgers, salads, oysters, and the like. Personally, I enjoy fries with chimichurri aoli sauce with my drinks. The salads are also fresh and filling. The food menu is pretty affordable as well.
The Abbey features events like $1 Pyster nights on Tuesdays, Pub Trivia on Wednesdays (¡don't use google you cheaters!), and every 3rd Thursday of the month, the pub gives back by holding a fundraiser event.
I say, support this great pub and enjoy yourself. It is a unique spot to hang out and relax with some quality beer, good affordable food, and friendly service.
I was told I have been here twice but remember being here only once. Guess that happens when you go to an AWESOME PUB in Stockton called "The Abbey". I love miracle mile and this is a great addition. I know a lot of UOP people (students and professors) love this place. One thing I regret not going for trivia night before I left Stockton. Next time I go back to STK I'm going on a Wednesday and will be here for sure. Too bad I didn't start visiting this place till the end of my stay in Stockton but I would call this a hit in Stk. Also, BEST FRIES I HAVE EATEN too. Great BEER. Love how they have organized the menu. Also, had the strongest beer up in that place like a boss on top of many other beers! Forgot what's its called of course =(
Review Source:The Abbey is starting to lose it's charm. Â I've been a regular customer since they opened and feel things were better earlier. The daytime bartender is a total putz and the beer has gotten ridiculously expensive. Â They have raised the prices on the fish taco's as well. Â 6.50 for a pint of common brewed in california craft beer and 4.25 for a taco is very high for stockton.
Review Source:The atmosphere here is very lively on the weekends. The seating is first-come, first-serve and it's probably a good idea to get here before the crowds. There also aren't that many tables. You've been warned.
Anyways, I actually came on a Thursday evening and it was packed, probably because of the local beer festival. We got the sampler dish that was created for the beer festival; it paired a dish with a beer. The foods were great and so were the beers. It was my first time and the staff was very patient and had lots of suggestions. I'll definitely go back when I visit friends in Stockton.
Went here a month ago and ordered an IPA on tap from the menu. Â The bartender told me they did not have it in stock and that the menu was outdated. Â However, they did not have another menu to offer me....... ???
The Bartender suggested a different, bottled IPA that was supposedly comparable. Â It was, hands down, the most disgusting beer I have ever consumed. Â My partner in crime could see that I was visibly grossed out, and I told her to try it and see what she thought. Â She took a sip, winced, and said "it tastes like when you accidentally spray hairspray in your mouth." Â
I couldn't have summed that flavor up better myself. Â The beer also cost $8, which is pretty steep for a GOOD beer. Â Her stout was OK, not something I would want an entire glass of. Â
The place itself is very small, and was not swept when I went in. Â I can't even believe I'm going to say this, but we redeemed our evening at Valley Brew. Â Maybe it was just a really off night, but I will never go back to this place.
A nicer pub in Stockton can't be found.
Every Wednesday trivia starts at 8 pm. Get there early as tables fill pu with teams (of no more that 4 or 5) quickly. The monthly schedule of topics is on the blackboard in the hallway but don't bother studying as the topic is broad and the questions often unexpected and well, trivial. Expect to be there until nearly 10 if you make the playoffs. The winning team (and 2nd place) walk away with prizes, usually bottled beer to take home. We buy an early dinner and always try to make the playoffs at least!
The food is always delicious, love the sauces you can choose from for the French fries. Pulled pork sandwiches are awesome, the baby greens (micro greens?) salad with cheese and candied nuts beats out other restaurant salads any day of the week.
I'm always a designated driver because I am allergic to something in the fermenting process so I always get a Cheerwine. I do know that you can ask for samples of what is on tap so you can get something to your liking.
Trapped at the Abbey
Its true, the moment you're in the Abbey you wish that the gods of beer will indeed trap you there with their almighty hop powers, so you may live out the rest of your days with hearty fellowship and delicious brews.
Now if you were born in Stockton as I was, you know one thing the town has going for it is a high to very high amount of decent restaurants. So when you hear alot of hype surrounding any place, it usually bodes well and I had been hearing many good things about the Abbey.
I walked in with around 20 good friends filtering in behind me. Decor includes stained wood paneling and fine art usually involving bottles of beer in precarious positions. As far as size goes the place is very small, really not much larger than your average pub. Knowing such details in advance I reserved the backroom for a decent price a week prior to my arrival so there would be more than enough room, and it worked out fairly well even though people had to stand. We started it off with the Abbey snacker which was only some of the most amazing thick cut salami on toast Ive ever had. It was all accompanied with artisan cheeses and, wow, those candied walnuts (which were delicious to the last)!
If you have sworn off drinking beer, they have a pleasing wine list. Personally, I'm not the hugest of beer drinkers in the world, but hey, the Abbey can change you so much you may walk out a completely different gender, who knows. With a list of over 60 beers theres something for everyone a few times over. I made an interesting choice in the beginning with the Rubicon, so hoppy I think I saw some of the flower buds still floating in the glass. The High Water IPA (highly recommended) brought me on course sitting nicely with a bit of citrus and dab of pine. Then, it happened... FISH TACOS! They were large, plentiful and delicious, seasoned with Abbey's signature fish taco sauce. They did not last long to say the least.
The crew are nothing short of amazing and will make your time at The Abbey an even greater joy. Rocci (yes like Balboa) a classy gal and a scholar, will provide you with delicious treats, she even went out of her way and bought me a couple herself (yes I owe you Rocci). Araceli holds down the fort and is not to be trifled with, but she is secretly kind and has a heart of gold. Then there's Cody, who will charm with his words of wisdom and will give you the latest bossip, and he wont even get mad if anyone shatters a glass ala Thor style (although I don't recommend it).
Overall, if you find yourself in the Abbey on a lonely night, fear not, for it will be a memorable experience as my night was, ending in tears of joy, epic hugging and dillion and dutch handshakes.
Met up with a good friend here the other day, we were expecting to check it out and want to leave. . . That was NOT the case.
We had such a good time!
The closed in area off towards the back of the building was perfect for us to get loud and funny after our Chimays! . . Â so good
We also shared a small fry that was HUGE which came with the BEST dipping sauces, my favorite being the Siracha Ketchup. . . Â to go along with our fries we had a spring salad with blue cheese that was on point!
The first thing to come to mind the first time I walk in here... Damn this place is small. Hell, even the second, third, and etc. time I'm here I still think that.
They have plenty of beer to choose from, but what sucks is that you can get all or most at the local Bevmo. No hard to find beers here. Nothing amazing on tap either.
The only thing great about this place is the food. Most of the stuff on the menu is pretty good. I always get the fish n chips because the slaw that they serve with it is hella bomb. Plus you can't beat the $1 oysters on Tuesday's.
Should be a five star review but their beers pretty much suck. Sorry...
A HIDDEN GEM IN STOCKTON.....
small and cozy on the Inside but well worth it. They have an amazing selection of beers and the food is really good pub food. My fiace and I tried it for the first time last night.
I can tell you that the Bartender was really sweet and she was very knowledgeable able the beers they had. I tried a  DIPA (Double IPA) called fireside. the description on the menu said pine with tropical fruit flavors and caramel with a bitter finish. When I took my first sip, it was right on!!!!! and at 9.5% one bottle hits you....
the place is a very cool place to go and chat and enjoy a pint. great bartender!!!!!
I will be back for sure!
Lots of beer to choose from, wish they had some lighter beers tho as I haven't found anything there I enjoy. Â How about getting Harp?? Â Its a standard in Irish Pubs, which I thought this was. Â Simple cheap light beer.
All that said, this place is fun. Â The food is outstanding. Â This is something they are doing right, whomever is in the kitchen is the brains and money!! Â Love the fish and chips, in fact in the past 3 weeks I have taken no less than 8 people here for the fish and chips! Â And the cold slaw....ROCKIN!!!! Â Recipe???
Small place and often times I haven't been able to sit and eat, so went outside in the cold, however the food was worth sitting outside. Â
Will keep coming back. Â Its A-OK in my book
My girlfriend brought me here after reading some reviews. Â This place is really cool and I wish they had something like this closer to where I live. Â
Walking in I did feel like there were eyes on me and that this place had a bunch of "Norms" but the staff was very welcoming. Â I had a super strong beer that I will likely remember for the rest of my life.
The food is really good too.
It's President's Day weekend (& I have to work).
4:45am.
Hungry.
Currently listening to: Clay Aiken album "Measure of a Man" (Really, Sarah??)
Why? Â I don't know. Â I just left it up to itunes.
Wishing I were at the Abbey right now having their awesome, succulent steak sandwich w/ their awesome potato salad, and a beer.  Whoa, a beer?  Me?  Anyone that's known me knows how I hated beer so much.  Abbey's got an endless selection of  beer.  Now that I'm 28, I'm beginning to  acquire some tastes...I feel like I'm 21 again!  Anyway, age is just a number...that or I'm just a late bloomer.
I love you, Abbey. Â
I shall end this nocturnal visit and begin my dormant phase. Â Goedemorgen.
A casual, cozy, and friendly pub on Miracle Mile!
If you are not much of a beer drinker, you must try the Strawberry Beer! It literally smelled like strawberry jam and tasted like strawberry sparkling soda.
I'm not really sure what the beer is really called, but if you say "Strawberry beer," the bartender should know.
I loved everything here. The cozy feel, the food, and of course, the beer.
I like beer, But, about this I am particular. I tend to like ales. My favorite of these  happen to be Belgian ales. I am also a former little Catholic schoolgirl, so a Trappist  Pub?  Not sure who's idea this was to trap my soul- the Guy upstairs, or the cellar dweller, but as soon as I saw this place, I was in.
It has the appearance and the ale selection of what you might expect of a place called the abbey. I generally like my bars to be pub-like and covered in wood floor to ceiling, so check there, and it was very spare on space. But your monastic life for the evening ends there.
I went with the Chimay, first, 'cause I wanted to get a little lift from the monks that got me here (some for my homies?) and be consistent with the theme of the place. Then I tried another Belgian ale, and both were crisp, smooth, and brewed by men who have forsworn all other pleasures of the flesh- like I like my beer to be. Brewing beer like this takes a dedication second only to, well you know who.
I browsed the menu, for a savory accompaniment to my sipping enjoyment, when...
Oh hot damn! An extensive array of gourmet dipping sauces for their fresh fancy french fries!!! ...Is that you, Satan!?!
Came here around 3 on a Wednesday for a random late-afternoon bite and beer with my girlfriend. She's not a beer head, but we both agreed: this cute place with great food is a unique and much-appreciated addition to the Stockton food and drink scene. We both enjoyed a crisp, clean Grimbergen Dubbel on draft, split an order of fish and chips and a schnitzel sandwich.
The fish may have been a touch greasy, but the lemon-caper and garlic aioli were great and the fries were thick cut, rustic, and delicious. The dutch crunch bread took me right back to the high school days of ordering Podesto sandwiches at lunch, but this takes it up a notch up with a great schnitzel (perfectly fried and juicy on the inside), fresh and vinegary slaw, and their wonderful aioli. Â Their german potato salad is perfection. Huge portions meant we had plenty of food leftover.
Next time I'm home for the holidays I'll be sure to tuck into their massive Belgium beer bottle selection.
Five stars from someone who doesn't necessarily choose beer... but I do choose quality and standards. Hence, five stars for the Abbey.
This place may be the size of other establishments' back rooms, but what it lacks in space, it makes up for in classy patrons, good barkeeps and a lengthy and everchanging beer list. I have always been lucky enought to find seating, but I could definitely see this place triggering my claustrobia on the right visit.
All beer and no tummy cushion makes for a future headache, which makes me happy that they have a small but satisfying menu of good ol' fashioned pub food. Fries, fish n' chips and sandwiches with your ale... that's a good time right there. And that's the Abbey.
I've never been in a "pub" before and let's just say that walking into here for the first time totally filled ALL my expectations of what a pub should look like. Small little wooden tables to sit with a bar area to order food/drinks.
I ended up ordering the grilled skirt steak sandwich which came with fries and three dipping sauces. I got the chimichurri, mango ketchup, and chipotle aioli. Overall, all the sauces were pretty bland and not too special. The mango ketchup tastes exactly like regular ketcup and the chipotle aioli is really mildly flavored. The best out of the three was definitely the chimichurri sauce which mimicked the sauce already in the steak sandwich! And for the Steak sandwich? Cooked pretty decently, but was kind of disappointed by the bread: imagined it to be crunchier on the outside and softer on the inside. But overall a pretty good sandwich.
Overall, really great place to come and drink on a weeknight. Beware, the spaces are pretty small here so if you come in a big group, you might find too much space for you to sit. We ended up having to sit in the back room because our group had 8 people and was a little too large for their seating in the front.
Will definitely come again and try the rest of their menu!
Charming and cozy pub to check out especially more than ever because winter is upon us. Â My bf recently turned 21 (finally!) and we came to the Abbey with a few friends to celebrate.
WARNING. Our group of 8 had trouble sitting around the table since space is limited  and the food trays are large so we had to tetris everything to try and fit in all on the table. I would recommend coming here with a group no bigger than 6. I doubt more than 20 people can fit inside the Abbey.
Our group perused the menu and just about everyone ordered the Grilled Skirt Steak Sandwich. Â How can you resist the sound of marinated skirt steak served on Podesto's Dutch Crunch roll with chimichurri aioli and grilled onions? Â Every single component of that sandwich was "mhm mhm good". Â The steak was juicy and tender. Â The chimichurri sauce delectably cream. Â And the Dutch Crunch from Podesto's is any carb lover's paradise!
You have to go up to the bar to order and you pay ahead of time. Â The waitress suggested a dark, roasty beer to go with the steak sandwich which I forgot the name of but my bf really enjoyed it and thought they paired well together.
All sandwiches come with a side of fries and you can choose up to 3 different dipping sauces to try! If you come with a group you can try all 12! Â My favorites was the Chimichurri and the Roasted Garlic. Â The Curry Taragon was too "curry" for me and don't even bother getting the Mango Ketchup because it tastes exactly like ketchup. Â
Overall, a great local spot!
OMFG this place is so delicious! Definitely one of my favorites in Stockton now.
I know this place is a pub but I have to admit that I love this place for the food. I absolutely LOVE their GRILLED SKIRT STEAK SANDWICH. The steak is cooked PERFECTLY. Extremely juicy and tender. No chewiness going on whatsoever. It's served on dutch crunch bread which is one of the tastiest types of bread out there. The sandwich is super delicious! It has to be one of my favorite steak sandwiches of all time. If you decide to get fries as your side, you get to choose three different sauces. My favorites so far are the chimichurri aioli and chipotle aioli. The meal goes perfectly well with beer too. They have a very extensive list of beers. I forgot the name but I highly recommend the first beer listed on the menu (on the other side of the food menu). It's light and crisp. It reminds me of blue moon but better!
In addition to great food and beer, the atmosphere is nice too. Hanging out here almost makes me forget I'm stuck in Stockton. They also  have trivia night on some days which sounds like a lot of fun. People that work here are very friendly and welcoming. The only bad thing I can say about this place is that it's fairly small. They have very few tables so don't plan on coming here with a huge group.
