The bright lights of Newbury Park have just gotten dimmer with the closing of Akrey's Tavern.  I disagree with everyone using the term "dive bar" to describe what was one of the fine points of Newbury Park.  This was a classic, come as you are this isn't a contest, type of beer joint.  Great patrons, great atmosphere, great bartenders, great patio, great location.  It was always a good time at this place.  One thing that Akrey's had that no other place out in this area has or will ever have, is character.  Character that comes only with time.  Now that Akrey's is closed, a character has passed away.  Thankful that I got to spend some time with that character.

I am so sorry to hear that Akrey's will be closing down in just a few days :/

Akrey's Tavern is the best dive bar I've ever been to, hands down.  From Tuesday night $4 pitchers to the sounds of loud country music coming from the jukebox and motorcycles coming and going, this place is as good as it gets.  The Akrey's staff and frequenters are like one big, dirty, loving family.  I can't tell you how many times I've gotten shithead at Akrey's and when I try to buy another beer, Jimbo instead gives me a free water bottle.  Thank you, Jimbo, your kindness does not go unnoticed!  I'm seriously so upset that such a staple of my underage drinking years will be leaving our town.

On a side note, party at Akrey's on Saturday, May 18th!  And when you see me unable to get out of bed or eat the next day, I will not be hungover, I will be in mourning.

    RIP AKREY'S.

This place has been the hidden gem of the Thousand Oaks community since 1931, and it will be closing its doors forever on May 18th, 2013.

Thank you Akrey's for the years of fond memories and great friends that you have brought to me and others in our neighborhood.  Its a sad loss of a priceless piece of this towns history to modern development.  You will be spoken about nostalgically and missed by all who had the privilege take part of the enjoyment you gave us.

My best wishes to the beer Gods Johnny, Sean, Jimbo, and our Goddesses Brooke and April.  You helped make Akrey's the memorable clubhouse it was.

I live about 45 miles from this place, but I still manage to go a dozen times a year.  There isn't much to say about it... it's a dive bar.  Great beer... no hard liquor.  The back patio is my favorite part of the place and I have gotten many a pleasant chill on back there.  The patrons are all usually pretty cool, I've met some really good people there and almost always have a damn good time.

As to the previous comments about smoking laws and plastic cups:  I call bullsh*t -  I've  NEVER been served ANYTHING in a plastic cup here or seen it done and smoking is absolutely not allowed in the bar.  Yes, I have been served beer in a mason jar and people do smoke out back in the patio.

I am stunned - STUNNED - by the great reviews this place has received.  I'm a fan of dive bars.  I'm not a fan of filthy, smokey, skeevy bars that make you feel as if you need a shower when you get home.  I know, I know . . . I'm going to receive some hate for this review.  Lucky for me there's no "F-U" button on yelp.  But I felt compelled to bring a little reality to the inexplicable love fest going on here.

Yes, I've been to Akrey's more than once.  I'll admit to caving to the wishes of a dear friend of mine who likes this place because it reminds him of home (middle of nowhere, Maryland).  I don't like drinking beer - or anything, really - out of plastic cups.  I also don't like blatant disregard for California's smoking laws.

Bottom line is, if you want cheap beer in a place where you'd feel comfortable in your jammy pants and hair curlers, this is the place for you!

Being that I live in the community right up the street, I couldn't ask for a closer, classic, tavern. A great selection of beers and a couple tvs and games throughout.
The thing I truly love is all the advertisements, cool beer posters, and even neon lights they have accumulated over the years and hung over every wall(even the ceiling). Love it! I wish I had so many of those.....
I'll be here often. Thanks Akrey's!

What a great place to hang out with real people who are sown to earth and dun to talk to. It's a dive in a retro kind of way as it has pinball, darts and pool tables. I love it because I don't have to get all dressed up to go there and can just go without makeup if i want. ChiP beer and bug screens and NO pretentious people. Reminds me of hanging out in Foremans basement via That 70s style!

Yes, it's a dive.  Yes, you have to pick up a key at the bar to use the restroom.  Yes, some of the regulars are little, shall we say, unpolished.

But, the place rocks.  Great Jukebox, cheap pool, cheap darts, and $4 pitchers on Tuesdays.  Seriously.  $10 could get you 2 pitchers and several games of pool.  So, grab some friends and come on over.

Sometimes you just want to meet with friends and not spend a ton of money for a weekday night out.  Tuesday nights at Akrey's is the perfect fit for that.  From 7:30-9:30 they have $4 pitchers of domestics on tap.  Not $4 pints, pitchers.  It is a great deal and will keep you happy while you play a couple of games of pool.  This place has a pretty cool local vibe and everyone is there to get their drink on and do their thing.  It can be a little rough around the edges, but chill out and have a good time.

I need to start coming here more often. CHEAP beer. Friendly bartender. Pool tables. Awesome smoking patio.  I'm a fan of this little dive.

I went last night for the first time and was pretty impressed.  I love the quintessential dive bar, and I must say that this one takes the cake!  Cheap pitchers of cold beer and friendly staff and patrons--what more  could you ask for in a neighborhood bar?  It definitely felt like one of those places you could go to alone, but still feel like you have friends!  I'll recommend this Newbury Park treasure to all!

Great little dive bar in the Conejo Valley. You just don't find places like this anymore. Darts, pool, and lots of bros. Pints are $4 and pitchers are $13 for imported. 6 taps, 3 domestic, 3 imported. Nice guys and a good time for sure.

One of the last places in the Conejo Valley that hasn't been turned into a strip mall or some pretentious chain eatery.  Awesome bartenders, a great jukebox and beer.  If you're lucky, you'll catch Yablo's Theme playing old-school So. Cal. style punk covers.  Drink lots of beer and get a cab home.  Get on down to Akrey's before they turn it into yet another strip mall.

Four solid stars for what an awesome dump this place is. You'd never know such a place could exist in Newbury Park. Cheap beers, some f'd up people and lots of cool sh!t on the walls. I call it character.

The first time I graced this wonderful shack alongside the 101 freeway, I was 18 and sporting the worlds worst fake ID.  Seriously, the thing said I was like 46, and the picture wasn't even in color.  Despite this point against me, I was granted entrance time and time again.

My memories of Akrey's are hazy at best, probably due to the fact that beers were only twenty five cents on certain nights.  It was a dusty old road house with minimal signage, sweet 90's jams on the jukebox (think Dishwalla or Soul Asylum or something equally forgettable), and a thick layer of smoke hovering over the pool table.  The back yard was filled with blue collar dudes smoking dirt weed, arguing the merits of each others work trucks.  They were good times.

Fast forward 14 years (still a fragment of the bars historic run), and I found myself back home and thirsty.  Within the first hour, a fight broke out and a guy got punched in the ear and it bled!  TAKE ME WITH YOU AKREY'S!

The only bar in Thousand Oaks as far as I'm concerned. John's doin his thing managing. I'll be there every time I'm in town. Thanks for keeping an integral part of the Conejo Valley alive Akrey's.

This place is amazing.  What's not to love about a TOTAL dive bar located right smack in front of a trailer park.

Come on people, you can't ask for anything better!

Cheap beer, white trash peeps, and friendly bartenders.  I love it!

    my favorite little dive bar

akrey's has been around since the 40's and is your typical no frills, local beer and pool joint which happens to be located in front of a trailer park!

on tap they have coors, bud, bud light, pyramid heffie and usually a micro brew.  in the cooler  they have a decent selection of domestic, imported and micro brews, as well as some juices, sodas and energy drinks.  show up on tuesdays and you'll be treated to $4 pitchers of coors, bud and bud light between 7:30 and 9 or 9:30.  i've downed my share of bud light pitchers here, that's for sure!

there are 2 pool tables, electronic darts and they often hold  tournaments for both games.

sometimes they serve food from the grill at night plus they recently  started serving breakfast the first saturday of each month.

as for music there's web-enabled juke box and they just started doing karaoke on monday nights.

every now and then they do theme nights, costume parties, etc...

all in all, if you just wanna relax over a few beers and not have to worry about impressing anyone, akrey's is the place!

If you are looking for a classy bar to take a date, where you can gaze into each others eyes over trendy martinis or fruit-laden cocktails with umbrellas, then do not go here.  This place is for beer-lovers only, and you can grab a snack if you like.  But be warned, it's a dive.  But that's why the people who frequent this establishment go here:  it lacks any pretension that it's anything more than a beer bar.  And the bathrooms are just that:  toilets and sinks.  No people with mouthwash, lotion, or hairspray who hand you soap and paper towels for tips.  I love it.
