I headed out of Raleigh to the main street of Rolesville to try Anzio's Pizza with my elderly parents in tow.
Anzio's has an order counter, booths along one wall and tables in a room towards the back. Â Staff was pleasant and directed us to the table (elderly parents are uncomfortable in booths) and handed us menus to review while I got them seated.
We ordered a large pizza with ham, pepperoni, and cheese. Â I was wearing a UNC shirt and one of the employees was wearing a NCSU cap, so we had a little basketball conversation as the order was placed.
Large is a more than accurate size description of the pizza. Â Loved the thin crust pizza. Â Enjoyed the flavor.
Walls are filled with many sports logos, banners, and photos. Â
My only negative comment is that the same room in the back with the tables is also their storage room. Â I would suggest at least putting up some type of screen panel to hide that part of the room.
I think for the area it is a nice local restaurant with friendly employees.
When we first moved to the area in late 2007 this was definitely the best pizza around. Â And even now, his marinara sauce is the BEST I have ever had (ask for it as side with your pizza and dip your crust in it...AMAZING!). Â I recommended this place to a friend of mine from NY. Â But unfortunately he went after it started going down hill, and now agrees with us that it's hit or miss. Â
I don't think he is doing well financially and is skimping. Â It's just not as good as it used to be. Â Most of the time there's not enough sauce and I think he's started using cheaper cheese. Â They no longer deliver and they got rid of their computer. Â Again, I think to save on costs. Â Some people I used to work with in Rolesville frequent Anzio's because it is so close and they noted the change as well. Â They said how he's really skimping on the toppings for sandwiches too, in addition to the changes in the pizza.
I really miss my old Anzio's. Â Unfortunately, while trying to save his business he is pushing us away. Â We used to get a pizza there every week. Â But now we haven't been in months. Â Probably only been a couple times this year. Â
Bring back the quality and we will be back.
Well, in contrast to Leesa F and Daniel, I _am_ a NJ native and can vouch for the authenticity of Anzio's Pizza. Â I have also sampled most of the items on the menu. Â
In the PA-NJ-NY experience, there is quite a bit of variation on the individual styles, and Anzio's certainly fits with the flavors, quality of ingredients, and preparation. Â It is rare, however, to find a pizza joint that pays as much attention as they do to the ingredients. Given, they do buy their cheese, meat toppings, and such from distributors, Â but the sauce is a step above many restaurants, let alone ordinary pizza places.
Had they positioned themselves as a strictly dine-in Restaurant with a wait staff and Italian Restaurant ambiance, I might quibble over presentation sometimes. But in competition for my need of real Italian fare, they really are a cut above all the rest.
Finally, when I ask for something a little different they usually take the time to bend over backwards to deliver. Despite the greatness of their pizza, they also have a fine chef salad and other healthier options. Â That's why they still get my business, even though I'm now on a low-carb diet.
Anzio's is a good pizza find in the strip malls of Rolesville. The pizza is solid and fresh tasting. Great sauce and cheese balance and flavor. They have a solid selection of topping choices. The staff is friendly and the owner can often be found behind the counter making the pies himself.
I haven't tried any of their other offerings such as the sandwiches and pasts plates (because the pizza is solid it's hard not to go with what you know). Â
Decor is standard strip mall (painted walls + standard seating with little more).
While they aren't near as good as Lilly's or Mellow Mushroom, they are definitely the best pizza in the Rolesville area and you can't go wrong with them vs. Dominos/Papa Johns/etc...
Okay - Daniel S.'s review for Anzio's had me laughing with tears! Way too funny! While I am NOT from Jersey or New York I can say that I have had MANY pizza's in the area from the various independent pizzerias and, for me, Anzio's is tops!
Their thin crust is cooked to perfection and the sauce is LOADED with garlic. For me that's a good thing! I have searched and searched the area for great pizza and have FINALLY found it in Anzio's.
In addition to their pizza we have tried a variety of their sandwiches such as the Philly Cheese Steak, Italian and Meatball Sub - DELICIOUS! Their Pepperoni Roll stands on it's own and is a great treat.
I do agree that Anzio's is somewhat "hidden" in a nondescript strip center but now that they have been found they have a true fan in us!
Absconded in the anonymous strip mall known as Rolesville Commons, no doubt named after considerable creative thought, is Anzio's Pizza. In addition to being named after a southern Italian west coast town and an infamous amphibious WWII US landing, there is now a pizza establishment named the same.
NC, in general, has set pizza expectations mighty low. Anzio's website indicates the owner took a " two week" pizza making course. Dear God, I could do better than that.
Nonetheless, with the lure of Southern Jersey style pizza dangling just a few miles from home, I struck at the bait. Firstly, WTH(eck) is Southern jersey pizza? Philadelphia?? Camden???? I'm from NYC!
I took the bait once, and once again and no longer needed to be baited. After four or five take out pizza experiences, I am quite pleased. Being a pizza purist, I can't bear to watch the pizza dough preparations. That aside, the end result is neither a traditional NY or Neapolitan thin crisp crust pizza nor a doughy mound of sauce and cheese.
The crust is both satisfyingly crispy and chewy, properly sauced and topped with a generous amount of cheese. Toppings vary. Meatball topping seems to be bought from a purveyor and not homemade. Eggplant is sliced, breaded and fried before serving as a topping. Maybe this seems unusual but it is a favorite of mine. Anzio's did not disappoint.
Extra Cheese? That hit he spot.
When I have had extra cheese, I have been most happy.
As a NYC native, this brings me a bit closer to home.
Please understand, I have not had any other menu options.
Tuesday's are One Topping Tuesday with an 18"" Large pie for $10.99. That's when you'll find me buying !
