Dishonest coupon policy! Â Be warned!
This restaurant has an ad in the current Entertainment book. Â After eating our meal, we were told that they could not accept the coupon because they were no longer Atlantic Bar and Grill and had changed owners. Â Never mind the fact that the signage in front stated that it was, in fact, the Atlantic Bar and Grill. Â There was no sign indicating a change had taken place and no outward reason to expect the coupon would not be honored. Â All in all, we lost about $20 by their refusal. Â We find their attitude ridiculous and they are going to lose more than $20 in the long run because neither us nor our friends are ever eating here again.
Welcome back Chef Mike!!!! Â We visited the ABG this past Saturday. Â This is the first time we've been there since Chef Mike's return. Â What can you say about Chef Mike that hasn't been said already? Â Extremely talented & creative.
Now that Chef Mike is the Owner the menu has undergone some "recreation" and in my opinion is better than it was. Â Very good variety with a lot of new signature dishes as well as some of your classic ABG dishes that customers have come to love over the years.
I had the "Angry Muscles" (special appetizer) and they were amazing (not too spicy) with the rack of lamb that was cooked to perfection (potatoes were a little bland) for $35.00. Â My wife enjoyed the crab bisque with the ABG sampler (which for those of you have never been there before is a two person appetizer if you order it on your own). Â
What i did like was the introduction of the Tapas plates and also now the option for soup or salad included with the Signature Dishes. Â New outdoor dining for light lunch and drinks is a plus. Â New trendy decor and some very South Beach type ideas makes for a new dining experience. Â Staff was very attentive, friendly and skilled.
I would very much love to rate 5 stars & it if I could rate another half of star I would. Â But of course I base my review on overall experience and not just food. Â My only negatives are it is still a very noisy dining experience. Â This has not changed over the years. Â And it's still a bit on the pricey side. Â Three appetizers, one Signature dish & 5 drinks (bretween the two of us) with no desert ran us around $170.00 (WITH tip). Â You get beat up a bit on drinks and the wine list is not nearly as vast as it was last year. Â Personally, I don't mind paying for good food so it was worth it to me. Â But it might scare some people off and would definitely not make it a place most people could frequent on a weekly basis.
Overall though I am extremely satisifed and will definitely be back a couple more times this summer.
Killer views of the beach and ocean plus a full bar are the big draws here (5 *). Â The kitchen turns out slightly-over-the-top American seafood and steak dishes, also an interesting assortment of bar food relabeled tapas plus yummy desserts (4 *). Â But service was as slow as watching the tide go out. (zero *). Expensive too, every entree $25 and up.
This is a place to drink hard and shout at each other over raw oysters on ice. You can almost forget conversation. Â Despite noise baffles (they are trying),
the dining room is loud, Loud, LOUD.
We visited on a Monday night in late June. Â That's very close to high season so of course the dining room got packed. Â We arrived at 6:30 and drinks came reasonably quickly, but we didn't get our entrees until 8:10, and dessert didn't come out until 9pm. Â That's just too long when you take the non-drinking retired crowd.
I owe this review some notes on food of course :) Â The lobster tamale was huge, the size of a burrito (look at my picture) and slathered in a hot and delish tomatillo salsa. Â But the interior was wildly overcooked little bits of lobster, a poor match for the heavy spice load. Â Not worth the $9. Â The Christie crab tacos were tiny (didn't see that one coming did ya? :) but tasty (ahem, no comment). Â
Oysters, clams and shrimp over squid spaghetti was delish, loaded with sliced garlic and bits of tomato. Â No closed (bad) shells in the whole batch. Â A gluten-free dish of scallops and potatoes had very large scallops perfectly sauteed, but some heavy sauce on top wasn't really necessary. Â
Vegetarians can look forward to a really outstanding bowl of udon noodles, loaded with small black mushrooms and other veggies plus a generous helping of kim chi, this was not an obvious choice in a seafood place but I can recommend it highly.
Just for grins we had the bonus experience of sitting next to a table of three fifty-something guys who were way way drunk and impossibly loud. Â The manager (I swear he was a double for Paulie Walnuts) warned them to quiet down, then the manager THREW THEM OUT, then the manager apologized to all the tables close by, and then the manager sent out dessert to us. Â Dessert was great, but, ah, it was awkward for all, you just don't expect dive-bar behavior in such an upscale and expen$ive place.
FWIW the dress code is all over the place. Â Guys in t-shirts and shorts, women in nice summer dresses.
The food was superb, I'll give it that. Â But it ends there. Â The service was just awful. Â Be prepared to wait long stretches between check-ins, to be confronted with complete indifference, to deal with total amateur freshmen runners, bussers and waiters. Â The entire waitstaff experience was just a joke. Â It's a real shame. Â If they retrained the staff, this place could still be a gem! Â I would probably try it again just for the food - but I sincerely hope they do something about those employees.
Review Source:My fist time there and it was excellent. Â I enjoyed the scenery, right on the beach and survived the storm. Â They have a nice outdoor seating area as well as the inside bar and restaurant. Â The bar manager comes up with a new and exciting cocktail which is worth trying. Â I had cucumber vodka with club soda, mint, cucumber and a scoop of lime sorbet-really good and refreshing. Â Something different, they put a glass of bacon on the bar for everyone instead of the usual nuts or pretzels, but be careful because you can literally eat it all because its so good. Â The food, was fresh and nice sized portions. Â I started with the stuffed clams in a lemon & butter sauce and they were huge and very tasty. Â The sauce was good, we dipped some bread after. Â Entrees, I had the filet mignon medallions with blue cheese crab sauce, excellent flavor and cooked perfectly. Â The service, food, decor and view all made for a wonderful evening and experience and I look forward to going back.
Review Source:Okay for a little background, I have been going here for years. Always loved it and I never went while Chef Mike was over at 409 in PP. Some people say the menu fell apart while he was gone. So, I have taken, out of state family, my son and daughter-in-law and my lovely wife more times than I can remember. You cannot go wrong now, because Chef Mike now owns it and cooks for it. Our last visit was the Thursday before Memorial Day.
Appetizers, Thai Calamari (cannot come here and not try this) and lobster sliders (OMG, sweet and succulent, great contrast to the calamari). Now, on to the entrees, my wife had her favorite, Chilean Sea Bass and I had the night's special, Hanger Steak ( hot peppers, the steak melted in my mouth
The view of the beach is now excellent thanks to Sandy and the remodel is great.
Promised to come extras from Chef Mike is a Tiki Bar to complement the outdoor seating. Bar menus and tapas are also now available if you are not interested in a full blown meal.
You gotta go, That's all there is to it. We down here know about it and even though it will hurt our chances for a table, I cannot, in my right mind, deprive anyone for this place.
Here are good things about Mike's ABG: It's fine dining at the Jersey Shore, the room and view are lovely, they cook meat to temperature, they have a lovely bar, some of the menu items - particularly the small plates - are yummy.
Here are the things that I won't hold against them: We had a really crappy table. It was small, dark, removed from any kind of window or view, and right next to the bustling kitchen. It was also Easter Sunday and service was slow and sporadic. When servers did show up, they were very pleasant and accommodating, but it seemed that the rhythm of the holiday had them off kilter.
The biggest issue was that I didn't like the food so much. There was lots of potential - quality ingredients that read on the menu as if they were combined in interesting ways. I had the sea bass with artichoke hearts and eggplant. I was looking for a good clean piece of fish with fresh veggies. When it arrived, the fish was heavily battered, and topped with all kinds of heavy sauce, veggies, and a mass of fried onions (or scallions - I can't recall) that had me digging around trying to deconstruct the dish. It was all a little too much. My husband had the lamb chops - perfectly done - with mashed potatoes and spinach. Again, it was too sauced, too rich, too much.
I think it's possible to have a lovely meal at Mike's ABG. I'd just alter my expectations next time, and drop that desire for a clean, light piece of fish.
We had been excited to finally check out Chef Mike's ABG after enjoying his food there several years ago and then following him over to 709 in Point. Â I have to say we were under the impression that the restaurant would look much different in its post Sandy remodel, but it truly looked identical which came as a disappointment. Â It was the same crammed bar with little seating, minimal standing room that basically left you joining the guests who were unfortunately seated at the bar tables, and the same old bathroom stalls that didn't shut. Â
We waited a full hour for a table and were seated in the dining area which we hoped would've been quieter than the bar area. Â Unfortunately, we were wrong. Â The bread was nothing to speak of, but the breadsticks were delicious as always. Â On the other hand, it left us wondering where was the baked garlic with the extra virgin olive oil? Â I ordered the filet mignon which was well cooked and very tender while my husband feasted on the pork chop which he said was better than average. Â We did take a dessert home with us that we assumed had ice cream on it. Â By the time we arrived home (30 minutes later) it was so melted we couldn't tell if it was ice cream or a sauce. Â It may have been a better idea for them to separate it being that it was a to go order.
Despite that this review doesn't sound as pleasant as we remembered the old ABG (when Chef Mike was there), we will certainly return to give it another chance. Â However, it will have to be on a week night in the hope to beat the crowd and the excessive noise level.
My wife and I stopped by Chef MIke's ABG on opening weekend.
We had never been to the Atlantic Bar & Grill before, so I was a little confused how to actually get there, it was kind of a maze, but not too difficult. Â Perhaps he should paint some footsteps on the ground that say "Follow me to Chef Mike's ABG"; lol.
Anyway, we were seated promptly at a high top near the bar, and offered bread and drinks right away. Â We especially enjoyed the 3 different selections of compound butter that accompanied the bread basket.
For an appetizer we had the calamari; awesome! Â It was a huge amount, enough for 4 people, easily, and the Thai chili sauce was great.
My wife had a simple Mediterranean Chop Salad, and I had the grilled Kurobuta Pork Chop. Â She had wonderful things to say about the salad, and really enjoyed the dressing. Â I didn't try it, because I was far too busy working on my massive pork chop. Â Seriously, it was huge, but delicious doesn't begin to describe how tasty it was. Â The maple mashed sweet potatoes were outstanding, and the combo of pork, chipotle bbq sauce, and crispy onion strings was amazing. Â It really was delicious, and there's not much I could criticize. Â One thing I can say; we used to frequent 709 and I noticed that if I ordered my steak medium (lamb one time), it would always be a little under, like med-rare. Â Using that knowledge (I do prefer my pork chops to be medium), I ordered it med-well. Â When it arrived at the table, it was cooked absolutely perfect medium and was just how I like it. Â So, take it with a grain of salt, perhaps order a little over what you want, who knows.
Overall; Â the service was good, especially being the 2nd night, the food outstanding, the piano player was great (I hope he's a regular), and overall we loved the experience and can not wait to go back. Â Oh yeah, the bar had BACON STRIPS in pint glasses!! Â I kept peering over to see if anyone was eating it; I even asked my wife if it'd be tacky to get up from my table and steal bacon from the bar....sadly, she said it would.
After being closed we attended the-reopening of Chef Mike's ABG (formerly Atlantic Bar and Grill). We wanted a special restaurant to celebrate my husband's birthday. We arrived just after six and the place was hopping like it was mid-summer. We had a high top table near the bar and from my angle I was able to watch the happenings in the kitchen.
For an appetizer my husband had three oysters: A1 Jersey, Blue Point and Kumamoto, he enjoyed each one and they each came with a dipping sauce. Â Additionally he also had a cream of mushroom soup, which was delicious. I ordered a small caesar salad. Â Simple yet just what I wanted.
Our entrees rocked! My husband ordered the Ahi Tuna over Vegetable LoMein and the tuna was perfectly seared and to his liking. I ordered the 8oz filet mignon with bleu cheese crumbles on top, served with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans. Mine was spectacular as well, the meat I like medium, there was a piece or two that was too raw for my liking but other than that, there was no left overs for either of us.
We decided to have a cup of coffee and try dessert. We had the special dessert which was Banana Gelato, and we shared it. Presentation on all dishes was dynamic. Â The gelato was served in a martini glass, two scoops, a chocolate swizzle stick and a touch of mint. Â It was to die for!
At the end of our meal the table we were at became over crowded by the bar overflow. However, you can see that this restaurant and chef is popular and delicious! We had never been to the Atlantic Bar and Grill before, but we will definitely be returning in the off-season to Chef Mike's ABG!
OK OK if you have not heard Chef Mike who was the best  wizard at AB &G and then went on to CREAT 709 Point Beach!  He is coming back to reclaim the Best of the Best this time he is the Man to Own and Create the best place to eat drink and be Merry DTS this summer and in fact all year long. The New Name Chef Mikes A B and & G... This is going to  be the best place in NJ ok the EAST COAST and BEYOND!!!!!!
Review Source:'Fine' dining options or at least those that approach the term are almost non existent in Ocean County but Atlantic Bar and Grill comes pretty close. Â I've eaten there on many occasions, both in and off season and the food and service has been consistently superb. Â The most impressive aspect is the scope of the menu and how well the food is prepared. Â Out of the dozens of times dining there, I don't believe I've had a dish I didn't care for and certainly came across a few that became instant favorites. Â The skill, preparation and plating, not to mention the freshness of the ingredients seem to surpass all other establishments in the area by quite a large margin. Â As others have noted, it is a rather small space but clean and modernly decorated with floor to ceiling window views of the ocean. Â It does tend to get a bit loud and reservations can be hard to come by, especially in peak times during the summer but a wait is well worth it. Â Once you've been seated, the wait staff is knowledgeable and better yet just as attentive as need be. Â A drink order is brought first thing and the staff knows enough to let the table enjoy their cocktail and relax, just talk and settle in without even cracking open a menu yet. Â Small touches like that go a long way in making a dining experience that much more enjoyable.
Review Source:Went to the Atlantic Bar & Grill on Saturday for our anniversary. We ended up going down the shore for an extended weekend and we had a blast.
They do not take reservations so it was first come/ first served. We got there around 6:45pm and were told that it was a 45 minute wait so we went and tried to hang out in the bar area. The place was packed for off-season dining at the shore.
We found our spot and claimed it real fast. We ended up talking with another couple and they were fun. I found out that people come from everywhere to dine at this restaurant.
After a cocktail or two and 45 minutes later, we finally got our table and were seated for dinner. It was just about 45 minutes so cudo's to the hostess for getting it right.
We were hungry so we ordered quite a bit of food. We split the apps which were chilled clams and oysters, calamari with a sweet thai chili sauce and the crab bisque.
The clams and oysters hit the spot. The crab bisque was very good and very rich. The calamari was also very good. After receiving the apps, we really didn't need our main meals. The calamari portion was huge. One compliment was to our waiter when he asked me did I want a cup or bowl of the bisque. At first I said cup and then I tried to change it to a bowl. He looked at me and said it's very rich and a cup will do you fine. Nice move and I really appreciated it since he was entirely right.
Our main dishes were the chilean sea bass and the rack of lamb. I had the rack of lamb (I love to order things I don't get at home) and it was delicious. It came with fresh vegetables and buttermilk mashed potato's. The sauce that came with the lamb was real good. I would highly recommend this dish. My better half had the sea bass and it was a very large piece of fish on top of white polenta. We ended taking most of that home with us.
We didn't order dessert since we had just about as much food as we could in one sitting.
The ambiance is nice inside the restaurant but it is also a little loud. As I recall, people sit outside and at the bar in the summer but as the season gets a little cooler, everyone waits inside therby waiting for their table.
I enjoyed the restaurant and will definitly be back in the future.
My girlfriend and I have been here twice now and my meal was great both times.
On our last visit we tried the short rib appetizer which was incredible...I love short ribs though so I may be a little bias. For dinner I had the sea bass and she had the salmon special. Both were cooked perfectly and the portions were plenty big enough for the both of us.
The entrees are expensive but worth it, you're not going to find quality like this at many places in the area. Same goes with the drinks, they're expensive but they tend to make them strong which for me is a major plus.
Don't be surprised if there's a bit of a wait, especially in season. The restaurant is surprisingly small inside, however there is an outside area which is nice if it's not too windy. The bar can be a little crowded too... also a small area. There's standing room outside on the deck though, although it's not a deck with a nice view since most of it is behind the restaurant by a motel. This is one of the only complaints I have, and this area also serves as the main entrance of the restaurant which is a bit awkward.
Overall I love the food here and service has always been good as well. Don't expect a cheap meal, entrees tend to be around $30 and with drinks and an app you'll be spending at least $100 for a dinner for two.
So so so disappointed. I had tried this place about 6 years ago and thought it was only ok. After reading the positive yelp reviews and not being there in awhile we decided to make the trip down to seaside. Restaurant atmosphere is lovely and there is a piano player on Friday nights. Waitress was attentive and friendly. We started with the appetizer sampler which aside from the tuna egg rolls was fantastic. Then came the disappointment...our main course. I had a cod special. My fiance had the lobster tails and my son had chicken fingers. The cod and lobster looked amazing, but unfortunately did not taste amazing. The lobster tails were Brazilian lobster tails so that may be where they went wrong, as most people would agree that cold water lobster taste way better. They just had no flavor and they weren't even served with real butter. Just that neon yellow stuff they skim off the top of the butter. My cod was only ok the real highlight of the dish was the potato bacon hash it was sitting on. But for 35 I would have liked to enjoy the fish. My sons chicken fingers were burnt and he hated them. They were also 10 bucks which I think is a little outlandish even for a classy establishment like this. After appetizer, salad, main courses, and a few beers our bill was 160 bringing it to 200 with a tip. I don't mind spending the cash when the meal is worth it, but sadly it was mediocre at best. Honestly, if I knew that the food was going to be a disaster I would of saved the ride and went to shipwreck where the price point is the same but the food is full of flavor and wonderful. Even red lobster is a star or two above this place!
Review Source:Ate here with a family of five food was good but rather pricey. They have an outdoor patio as well as indoor seating. Â The service was attentive as you would expect from a restaurant of this price.
What distinguishes this from other shore restaurants is the view and the decor. Nice view of the ocean and nicely decorated.
The crab bisque and tomato soup were good. Â Lamb special was tasty, rib eye steak was a bit dry (too thin) even though it was supposed to be medium rare. Â Jumbo shrimp were also good. Â Scallops in pasta left a little to be desired. Â Twin lobster tails were a good size and were tasty.
Fairly extensive wine list.
Good if you want a fancy night out, otherwise there is better food a lot cheaper at other nearby restaurants.
I have eaten here many times throughout the years and always enjoyed their food. Â The atmosphere is good but a bit tight. Â There is outdoor seating and a good view as long as you look to the sea. Â To get to this restaurant one has to walk through a motel that gives you doubt about a good restaurant at the end but it is there. Â Excellent fish and other dishes that are delicious. Â A bit pricy but not over the top. Â A good wine list as well.
Review Source:I don't know why everyone raves about this place. The food was terrible and super pricey. The filet tasted like it was microwaved. I paid almost 100 dollars for a meal that stunk! We sat outside, the view was nice, outdoor service was slow. Took about a half an hour to get some bread.
Glad the wine was good, that was the only thing that kept me happy. Save your money and go eat on the boardwalk, the food is better there!
There are not many restaurants in NJ with beach views....ABG is one of them. Â Came here recently with family and had a great overall experience. Â They have indoor and outdoor (covered) seating....the wait was 1 hr for inside but for some reason there were tables available outside so we took advantage. Â
The food was some of the best we've eaten in the area. Â We started with the sampler platter which everyone enjoyed (came with 3 different dipping sauces), and I had an incredible 14 oz NY strip steak for dinner. Â Everyone loved their meals and the service was great. Â My wife ordered a salad and even that was substantial and plated nicely. Â I tasted someone else's salmon and that was delicious too. Â We also shared a few desserts which were all excellent. Â The people next to us ordered the scallops which were huge and looked amazing so I'm planning on ordering them next time. Â
This is one of the most expensive restaurants on the barrier island with most entrees in the $30's-$40's, so be forewarned. Â They even have a golf cart that picks you up and brings you to and from the parking lot (free of charge)! Â The food is delicious and the portions are large so you feel like you are getting your money's worth. Â We'll be back again soon.
Recommended by a business associate. Â went for father's day, 4 adults. Â boisterous tables near us but view and food fantastic. Â Our server, Chelsea, was friendly, knowledgeable, and let us sit with drinks and menus for as long as we needed. Â when two steaks were underdone (for our liking) we were brought a complimentary shrimp cocktail (yum!) Â everything was great: oysters (malpec) were as fresh as they get, the shrimp were huge, and the king crab legs giant and as fresh as you could get considering they're from the west coast. would def go again. Â Would look for a bar menu though as, for us, this is def a special occasion restaurant.
Review Source:I went to this restaurant with my family for my Dads Birthday. Â One of my friends recommended it to me. Â To start, the breadsticks and bread were amazing! Â The breadsticks had and garlic and herbs on them. The bread had california raisins and figs. Â So good! Â I ordered the herb crusted halibut with collard greens and risotto. Â The halibut was moist and absolutely seasoned perfect. Â The risotto was also very good. Â My dad had the reef and beef. Â The filet was cooked to perfection and the lobster was the best I ever had. Â So moist and tasty. Â I work in manhattan and get to try a lot of restaurants. I have to say this is one the best meals I had this year. Â I will definitely go back. Â Last but not least, you have a view of the ocean. Â which is very nice!
Review Source:I do not understand how anyone could give this restaurant a bad review!!! I am frequent to restaurants in Atlantic City (The Palm, Ruth Chris, etc) and this place by far exceeds any of them! Ive been coming here for years, not once have i had a bad experience or ate any food here that wasn't up to par with the price.
Review Source:Very good location, service and food. Â However, not good for teenagers with unsophisticated palates like the girls we brought - LOL. Â Would have been much better if it were just me and the hubby. Â Pricey for our group....I didn't see the bill but I could tell from my husband's expression that it wasn't what he planned on spending. Â Next time - we'll leave the kids home.
Review Source:We were disappointed with the new menu. Their signature dishes are no longer available such as filet mignon medallions, tuna and even the great chopped salad was replaced. can't understand how they don't have not one chicken dish on the menu. this was always our favorite place. other friends have commented how disappointed they were as well. the roasted garlic with the bread is now replaced by cloves swimming in olive oil. unless the chef is the owner, why give him so much power and lose your faithful, all year round, customers! Â Hope hte new chef reconsiders some of the delicious old items. Â Trish, OG
Review Source:Atlantic grill used to be amazing but after eating there last weekend it no longer is worth the money. Everyone at the table tried something different and ALL WERE DISAPPOINTED. From the salad to the seafood it was all bland, little flavor and too few options. they now only have about 5seafood entrees, and a ton of mediocre small plates. Your options for sides are boiled down to cheddar mash & Â French fries, which I had with my over cooked steak, and they were less thrilling than the ones I bake from frozen at home.
So sad to see this once great restaurant become an over priced mediocre dining experience, especially when the Nj shore has so many of those already.
This is my favorite "treat yourself" place at the Jersey shore. We visit about 4 times a year and have never been disappointed. The food is prepared with care and is always top notch. The portions can be a bit large but who can complain about getting two meals? The view out over the beach is spectacular. The wait staff is always very attentive. It can get very busy and they don't take reservations so you might be in for a long stint at the bar.
Definitely worth the wait.
Ok first off it's not cheap. Typical entree is $25 to $35 but it's incredibly worth it. Second, the portions may look small but they are VERY filling, (yes emphasize on the very). I've never left without a bag to go from my dinner and I usually finish what I order at most places.
It's basically like a small upscale tucked-away New York restaurant transplanted on the barrier beach. If that's what you enjoy, you'll like it. If you prefer a casual, cheap vacation seafood place, don't go. Simple as that.
About 7 years and 15 visits later...not 1 complaint!
I almost always check out reviews on Yelp before I try a new place, especially one with prices like this but I can honestly say that I'm glad I didn't read these reviews before going.
It's situated behind a maze of "interesting" motel buildings. Â There is a beautiful view of the ocean if you get a good table and a cramped view of the people next to you if you don't. Â
My friends and I were staying at a relative's house for free so we decided to splurge on dinner here and we had WONDERFUL meals. Â The mahi mahi, tuna and filet were all delicious and well cooked. Â
The drinks were expensive but good, equal to about 2 drinks at another bar. Â The place was packed and the service a little slow, but we had a very enjoyable dinner.
I don't know when I will be back to get another view of this place but I hope that it is just as good if I decide to splurge on dinner here again.
How can you write a bad review about this place??
I've been coming here for a few years and, yeah, it's expensive. It's fine dining! If you can't afford it, don't come. If you're complaining about the motel being the same price and the restaurant, DON'T COME! Get a better hotel maybe!
Back to the food and drinks.
The drinks are always stiff and I usually just order one and move on to wine. The food is always amazing. I highly recommend the rack of lamb and the peppercorn filet medallions with crab meat. Those are my 2 stand-by's for sure.
The service is always great. I've never had an issue. They do have some strict rules about seatings and so forth but come on!! They have everyone serving them excuses all the time. WELCOME TO NJ and THE SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT that goes with it! Sorry that the rest of us have to suffer for the few, but be a little understanding that these businesses make their living off the summer customers only and are not open year round. They need to capitalize on the business they can get so understand that you all have to be there *within 15 minutes of the reservation or you go on the wait list.* PS.. they tell you this when you make a reservation and you can only make a reservation!
We enjoy the AB&G. However, given its "sticker shock" prices, we merely sit at the bar and have salads and other "finger food". If you want lobster and other sea food, go to the local fish market at the end of the drive.
It's tough to get in the place once school is out. Doors open at 5pm and the line forms at 445pm or earlier. Bar is full within 10 minutes of opening. Either get there early, or go at 9pm or so. We usually go before the end of May or after Labor Day.
Have read many reviews about bad service. Can't comment as bar help has been good. It's a small restaurant and we've noticed how hard it is to get a table. So, like I wrote earlier, go in the off season.
Very pricey and trendy and the portions are small.
Its lure is where its located right off the ocean with beautiful views but that will lure you into a very disappointing and expensive night.
I went a few years back and got a lobster with one claw- THEY would not get me one with 2 saying thats what they have- It was a crayfish for Gods sake it was so small and when I should have walked out-well you dont do that but it just plain sucked.
My wife was shocked I took it.
The bar is usually crowded and noisy and you know you will be paying big $ after a bender there.
We stayed at IBML too and thought that would be a great place to hang- but it would have cost us as much as the vacation itself-so go find other hang outs that have specials.
This place gives you nothing but an empty wallet.
Lets just sat it was bad a few years back so maybe it improved-maybe not?
For the cost go to the Pier House or Berkeley all right nearby and both with better reputations and food and cost!
I stay at the IBML (hotel on the same property) almost every summer .. and I still just walk right by this place. Granted, this is the only "fine-dinning" joint almost anywhere on the island .. but Seaside vacations are no time for "fine-dinning" anyway.
Lots of money for poor quality food. Nothing special being produced from these kitchens. Hit the local hoagie shops or the boardwalk instead and make the most out of your vacation.
Having frequented many of the Jersey Shore restaurants, I was very excited for this experience as I've heard nothing but good things. Â In a word... Â meh.
Let me first touch on curb appeal - in order to get to this place it requires a 400 yard walk through what can only be described as the prison of motels. Â It's shady, to say the least. Â After wandering through the government housing project that is the 'hotel' we made our way to the bar. Â The bartenders were very nice and the atmosphere was great. Â If you look hard enough, you can almost see the ocean.
On to Dinner - there were 7 of us with a 730 reservation. Â We were seated promptly at 730 at a table near the window with a decent view of the ocean. Â The server was very friendly and attentive. Â Drinks came out fast. Â Our appetizers also came out quickly and they were decent, nothing to write home about, but decent. Â This is where the word 'quick' will be replaced with 'glacial'.
It took every bit of an hour from the time we finished our app's to when our entrees hit the table. Â At this point, we were annoyed, over dinner, and to top it off, the food wasn't good. I had the San Francisco Cioppino - the first mussel had the texture of a shoe. Â I tried to get into it but each bite got worse and worse. Â It had clearly sat a solid 30 minutes in a window. Â It was dead. Â I sent it back and opted to not replace it. Â Not one visit from a manager who HAD to have known our experience was going down hill. Â I had little bites of everyone else's plates and they were abysmal attempts at fine dining. Â The stuffed veal chop was over cooked, the king crab legs were over cooked, etc. etc.
We passed on desert and hightailed it out of there. Â If I were in the neighborhood I might stop in for drinks and oysters at the bar. Â I would highly recommend passing on dinner.
Â
Stick with the Pizza places, you won't be disappointed and you won't be out $100 per person.
Ahh, the Atlantic Bar and Grill, aptly named as it sits 100 yards from the Atlantic Ocean which, on some occasions, you might actually be able to see if you acquire a seat along the eastern edge of the place or happen to be there when it is deserted, i.e. upon opening. Â Crowded is an understatement: if they could seat you in the broom closet and not get a fine from the local fire chief, they would. Â And you'd probably sit in there, too, since this is the closest to fine dining within five miles. Â Actual martinis. Â Actual ambiance. Â Actual tablecloths and dinner napkins. Â Actual prices that make you wonder "Why would I pay that for this?"
Perhaps I'm being too harsh. Â Being packed into a great place for terrific food isn't always so bad, as I've dined with my Wife in many NYC bistros and tiny settings that were well-worth the unavoidable eavesdropping and exercises in sotto voce conversations. Â However, they are missing the "terrific food" part of the equation, and while it's good, it's not good enough to tolerate Mr. Suave's aftershave/cologne experiment or to endure the ignorant observations of visiting yentas. Â You take this all with a grain of salt and perhaps a dash of Tabasco. Â It'll work in a pinch.
