Terrible food. Terrible service. I've ate at restaurants all over the world and have had some pretty bad experiences, but this place tops them all. I got two beef tacos and rice. Pretty hard to mess that up, right? Wrong. I couldn't even eat them. I ate some of one of the tacos and it left the worst taste in my mouth ever! Don't go here. I know the options in this area are few, but you can do better.
Review Source:Considering this is like one of the only places to get food in Niland it wasn't too bad at all. The place was so cool inside - a much needed getaway after roaming around the 122 degree weather by the Salton Sea. I don't think a Corona has ever tasted as good as it did here.
I had a chicken torta. It was good, I ate the whole thing. I wish it had more avocado, but then again there's never enough avocado to satisfy me... ever haha. Everything was very simple and I think my boyfriend was a little perplexed with how small the "big" burger was. What I really liked about this place was that they put beans and sprinkled cheese on their chips. It was like eating half finished nachos or something. Yums.
The lady that served us was awesome. She kept the chips coming and when I asked for limes she brought out a whole plate of them. She was really great. Quick, cheap food and cold beers to escape the heat of the desert. It's a win in my opinion!
P.S. definitely go check out Salvation Mountain!
On your way to Salvation Mountain? Wanna check out Slab City? Going to check out all the amazing abandoned buildings and houses in Salton Sea?
On your way there do yourself a favor and stop here. The interior is less to be desired for. And the bathrooms are a bit raunchy. But this is such great mexican food made with love and cheap beer!
Like Paul L. Said, very simple. Plain tables, with basic chairs that look like they've seen better days. A gnarly pool table and a television on in the corner that constantly plays spanish soap operas and game shows.
Carnitas tacos are SO fresh. Could live off their rice and beans. Burritos are huge. Well worth the price and friendly service in family owned restaurant. A must go to for the people watching alone! :)
There aren't many dining options in Niland. Â Actually, there aren't many options in Niland. Â
Ballesteros is a very simple place -- some tables and chairs, a wood-top bar, pool table, and television -- all enveloped in a 'No Country for Old Men' ambiance. Â I strolled in after sunset and asked for a breakfast burrito. Â No problem. Â If Niland had a small motel, I might've been tempted to sit at the bar all night watching the Mexican game shows that the few other souls there seemed to ignore.
Instead, I took my burrito with me as I drove north into the darkness for a night of camping on the Salton Sea.
When we are in Niland, we love to eat here. Cheap beer, cheap good food. I get the Bean & Rice burrito with avocado and pico de gallo - with lots and lots of their salsa. It is the perfect desert treat.
They also have cheap beers. It's family owned, they are very nice and helpful. So, on your way to or from Salvation Mountain, GO HERE.
