Wow, was this place beyond terrible! I was warned that the bartenders here were extremely rude but I still left with a sour taste in my mouth (and it wasn't from some lemon drop shots - see below).
I asked for some lemon drop shots but was told they were out of sugar. Okay, fair enough. I asked her to make me a tasty shot with vodka in it. Her response? All vodka shots are kamikazes. Um, okay. I understand being a bartender is tough dealing with drunk assholes but I was neither drunk nor an asshole. I was looking to drop some serious bucks. After my one shot, I left.
Atmosphere was pleasant enough with a live band and pool but that wasn't and will not be enough to keep me there or keep me coming back.
Its an OK place considering what harlingen has to offer. Its outside so there can be a humidity or mosquito problem in the summer. The lame cover band has been playing the same set of cover songs for about 20 years now. During the week they only have a jukebox so there can be long pauses of complete silence. I think bars should always have some type of music playing. The beer selection is poor and parking can be an issue on the weekends it lot has tons of glass so be careful. Be ready to get your own drinks cause the waitresses suck and take forever. Baloos is all hype not really a awesome place its just where all the non-ghetto people hang out..

The beer selection is minimal and the drinks are small but it is always a guaranteed good time. Â The bartenders are really good and fast-i've never had to wait long for a drink even on the busiest nights.
The best part about this place is that the crowd is different every time i go there. Â I think that since this is the only bar people talk about in Harlingen, a lot of the out of towners end up there. Â It is a great place to meet people and I have never had a bad Baloos experience!
With not many choices in Harlingen, you'll likely find yourself here. It's a decent outdoor bar, but they have a poor beer selection. No Lonestar beer in a South Texas bar?! Come on! They also don't have draft beer! Their mixed drinks are mediocre at best. Their live music is also mediocre. Drink specials and service isn't that great either.
And yet, this bar is considered one of the better ones in town which says a lot about Harlingen.
Frickin' sweet.
Anytime I'm in Harlingen, I go here. It's the most popular bar in town and definitely not sketch like other bars in the Valley.
To sum up Baloos, it's a palapa set up around the swimming pool of a shut down motor hotel. Fun, laid back atmosphere. Excellent, competent staff. Strong drinks. Live music on some nights, and a pool/barbeque party on Sundays (or at least there used to be).
No cover charge, no attitudes. This place gets busy and is badass.
When you picture a bar on the border in South Texas, Baloos is what comes to mind. Â The fresh outside air, the pool in the middle of the bar, the live music, the lights hanging from the ceiling that covers only half the bar, the run down hotel behind the bar, is the picture of South Texas everyone has. Â Great prices plus atmosphere. Â All of the staff are wonderful, outgoing and gorgeous! Â If you are in South Texas/just North of the border, Baloos is a must stop at location.

It's basically a big palapa w/ a bar, pool table, and stage underneath (live music Thurs - Sat). Â I've been here way too many times, but have always had a good time. Â This place might be the most random place on the planet. Â I can't tell you all the odd/serendipitous things that I have come across here. Â Really, I can't. Â But here's the deal: Â if you're in Harlingen lookin to party, come here. Â And ask for Joseph, he'll take care of you. Â That is an interesting cat right there.
