We went tonight at about 7pm and it wasn't to busy. When we walked in, the Hostess was there and 2 busboys sitting around texting. That's a no-no from what I see on these restaurant shows, but I didn't give a lesser rating.
I really enjoyed everything from the sesame bread sticks and bread , to the nice salad and of course the sizzling seafood with baked potato. We all enjoyed our seafood dishes, and yes the drinks were very good also. Our waiter Eric was really nice and friendly. The service was a bit slow for it not being busy, but the food made up for it and we were in no hurry. The prices were a little high for a dated restaurant, but I'd go back for the seafood again.
Well I wanted to visit the Barge since they rebuilt after hurricane sandy. Sadly the outside is not open. When we walked in there were two waitresses adding up bills. We stood there a few minutes and then one of the waitresses says to the other I haven't even got to table 3 yet and made a sarcastic laugh. It was then explained to us there was no hostess working. After we were seated I said to my sister I hope the one who laughed about not getting to her table wasn't our waitress. After sitting there for 10 minutes with no water or bread unfortunately she was our waitress. Water glasses were dirty and we had to ask for bread two times and she blamed the bus boy.
Good thing the food was very good, but expensive
. Had to wait for 15 minutes to get the bill and she came over with it and complained how people didn't show up
on time to work. Not professional but at least the food and wine was good.
I give The Barge 5 stars because I've gotten the BEST cooked food EVERY time I go.
They don't do the fancy cooking - they do the basic, good kitchen.
The fish, the steaks, all else are all amazing.  Their Sangria, the best!  The service is good, the waiters are all pleasant &  let you feel comfortable.  The atmosphere is a straight-forward by the waterfront place, they don't need distracting decor here, people  go here for a good meal, and the Barge always comes through.
I've read the other reviews, people saying the food is bland.....not unless you require more spice or otherwise, just let the server know if you might prefer more spice or whatever for your taste, I'm sure they will be more than happy to accommodate you.
Always, always a great meal here! Â :)
What some call outdated I call historic, what some say needs work, I say it adds character and for these reasons and more my family, friends and I continue to enjoy fresh lobster and delicious dinners at this landmark restaurant. Â We've found the service and family-run feel of the spot warm and attentive so I can easily recommend to anyone looking for a nice dinner by the water to look beyond the imposing Armory restaurant and take a seat in a much more quaint setting where the food not merely the location is the focus. For all of it's charms, however, I must agree with my wife who didn't have the fond memories I did of coming here with family for special occasions and accept the fact that it is in need of a little bit of "updating". Â The owners should realize too that character won't go away if improvements are done correctly. Â The decor is a little dated, and would also make for a wonderful episode of Restaurant Impossible (Hint Hint owners) Â The menu is classic, the service at least when i've been there has been friendly and attentive, but sadly the old place could use a little "face lift".
Review Source:We decided to travel to the under-rated Perth Amboy waterfront on our day off for a seafood dinner. At 4:30pm, we were the only diners (felt like a couple of 80-yr-olds!) with a few in the bar. Our waitress was very friendly. We started with bacon-wrapped scallops for $11, which were a bit undercooked and since it included six smallish scallops, was underwhelming.
The early bird specials were very affordable - all in the $13 range - and most everything else was around $20 and up. I would have been happier with something in between; my budget couldn't justify $29 for twin lobsters, so I went with stuffed flounder, as did my dining companion. The early bird specials include salad, soup, and coffee, so they're a very good value. Our [optional] dessert was crème brûlée, which, like the rest of the meal, was okay, but not thrilling.
Overall, quality was ok, service was decent and friendly, and very good value.
This was horrible...find your wa to Joe's Crab Shack is all I can say. Â I should have known when we walked in and the place looked dumpy. Â The carpet was dirty and there was a dingy smell below that of the food they were cooking. Â
The food, especially the Shrimp was depressing and the service was poor. Â The waitor forgot about us and seemed to be overwhelmed. Â
I won't be going back...it's like a dirty Red Lobster.
After walking all of downtown Perth Amboy for a new place to go and not finding one, we decided to go back to the waterfront. The Armory had a long wait so we went across the street to the Barge.
The place was packed too but we got a table right away. The service was average, the broiled tilapia I had was good, could have had a little more seasoning. My friend had a calamari and scallop dish she really enjoyed.
All and all I would come back, I am just curious if the crowd at the restaurant and the Armory are due to the serious lack of sit down restaurants in Perth Amboy.
old school traditional seafood house. Â great prices and great food. Â the only reason it didn't get a five star, is because the service can be a little course and the decor is dated, but honestly, that's part of the charm. Â when you can buy a huge lobster for 21$, perfectly cooked, who cares about the carpeted dining room lol. Â order the shrimp cocktail!! Â also, the cheesecake was homemade and delish!
Review Source:The food - without fail - is BLAND. Â Missing something. Â Mediocre is the best way to put it, and for $20+ per plate, eating here is a fool's errand. Â
Skip it.
Don't put up with the shoddy service.
Don't bother eating grease or stinky fish. Â It's foul.
The few things that are done right: shrimp and clams and soups.
Avoid: red meat, poultry, broiled or baked fish, fried fish, scallops (not fresh), and anything that can be undercooked.
Yuck.
If you don't know already, Perth Amboy has a really great waterfront promenade including a marina with  a view as far as Long Island.  Walk across the street to The Barge which is family-friendly, Greek American place.  It is a bit old fashioned but the service is good, prices are reasonable, and the fish is worth it.  Not top of the line but good in any case.
Review Source:The Barge is an old school seafood house on the perth amboy waterfront that's been around since 1925. They also have delicious meats, like rack of lamb but the real treat is the fish. The place is well decorated with giant plastic fish on the walls, huge ship paintings, fishing nets, lighthouse lamps, and boat steering wheels. This is an independent restaurant with a loyal customer base, some patrons have been going here for a very long time, they are fun to meet! Â My grandfather told me that when he was dating my grandmother they would come here. He told me this on our last date at the Barge! Â You might see some nuns in full habits here because there is a rectory nearby! Local fisherman, artists, laborers and cocktailers hang out at the bar and are a friendly crowd. Sometimes i like to grab a Chardonnay and chill out with them. For dinner or lunch, the Barge has delicious sizzling seafood platters. They come with a small house salad or tart coleslaw (my favorite), then a sizzling platter of fish. I usually get the grecian stuffed flounder, that means stuffed with spinach and feta cheese with lemons to squeeze on top. Its so good. This place is owned by Greeks and they make delicious greek food. The greek salad is excellent and so are the chicken kabobs. The atmosphere is really quaint, with salty waitresses who will give you a pleasant hard time and leave you with a smile. The backroom hosts groups for lunch/ dinner meetings. Once I was there and watched a local group get up and do the pledge of allegiance before they started their meeting. It made me feel good.
