In my opinion this place is one of the real star debuts of 2013 in downtown Staunton (along with Redbeard Brewing). I couldn't believe such a good and fun place had opened here, and still can't quite.
The selection of a good wine shop (with no corkage fee); the ambience of a cozy wine bar; great plates of cheese and olives and bread. The sign says "charcuterie" too, so I'm still waiting to come back and find some good terrine or pate (they've had a couple salami on at least one occasion).
Enjoy the by-the-glass options; so far I've found them to be well chosen. Do visit if you like wine and/or cheese!
We were strolling through Staunton this past weekend and happened to run into this place and were thrilled that we did. Â What a great addition to the Staunton roster of eateries, bars. Â The Barking Dog is primarily a wine bar/shop/eatery that offers a wide variety of cheeses, wine bottles to purchase, dipping olive oils, and gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches. Â They have several wines available to purchase by the glass or bottle. Â Everything is priced reasonably and they also do tastings. Â The wine selection is extensive and includes local varieties. Â
The gourmet grilled cheese is delicious, we opted for the double cheddar on sour dough with tomato jam. Â It was large enough to split for lunch and included chips and a pickle, a good value at only $9. Â The staff was friendly and attentive.
This makes Staunton an even better home base if your looking to take a trip to Virginia's wine valley. Â They are conveniently located right in downtown on Beverly street. Â Wish I had more photos to post since this is the first review, hopefully you will go and add a few.
