This place is fabulous!!! Â We are just passing through and stopped for lunch. Â The portions are very large so we have take out too.
The cornbread is divine. Â The green beans are better than mine. Â We had the smoked half chicken that was the best I've ever had-it was moist and delicious.
We got to "big" banana pudding to share but even that was huge.
I would encourage anyone to time your trip sp you can eat here!
"the best bbq"
This is absolutely fabulous food. At our table, we had bbq turkey, chicken, great ribs, brisket ,pork and the talking rock sandwich (brisket, cheese, onions and similar to philly cheessteak sandwich.)
For sides, we had baked beans, collard greens, fried pickles, broccoli slaw (yummy), sweet potato fries (crispy and served with marshmallow sauce), corn bread and biscuits. There were about 6 sauces from which to choose. Everything was outstanding.
I consider myself a self proclaimed BBQ aficionado and by my standards, this place rocks! Â I've had the pulled pork, the brisket, and just about everything else on the menu too! Â The staff are amazingly friendly, as you would expect from an upstanding southern business! Â Keep the smoke rolling and I will keep coming when I'm in town!
Review Source:While visiting my parents in Ellijay, they informed me that we would be eating lunch at a gas station. Â I was somewhat hesitant, but then I remembered that Guy Fiyeri's Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives features gas station restaurants all the time - so I went in with an empty stomach and an open mind.
Good golly, this place was good! Â The cornbread was sweet and moist, the pulled pork was tender and tasty, the broccoli salad reminded me of Sweet Tomato's Joans Broccoli Madness Salad (a favorite of mine), and the "Sweet Taters" (sweet potato fries) were served with a decadent marshmallow cream sauce. Â Absolutely delicious. Â Another member in our party ordered the 99 cent banana puddin' - and it was a size easy enough to share, and boy - was it good! Â
We will definitely visit again when visiting the area! Â Yummy!
The staff is friendly and for a gas-station restaurant surprisingly roomy. Â We've been here before and I think the ribs are good, although the sauce is on the spicy side. Â This time I got fries and slaw as a side to my ribs and I only took two bites of the slaw because it's very vinegary and I prefer the creamy version. Â The fries were cooked properly, however, and the Texas toast was good. Â My wife had the pulled-pork and it lacked the smoky flavor that the ribs had. Â When we were here last time, the pulled pork did have the requisite smokiness, so she was a bit disappointed. Â Not enough to put us off, so I imagine we'll be back the next time we're passing by.
Review Source:I am going to be the first person to step out of line here, but I will have to respectfully disagree with everyone else.
As far as ambiance is concerned, having bbq in a place that is 1/3 gas station, 1/3 gas station convenience store, 1/3 bbq joint is definitely a unique experience.
Service is just fine. Â Nothing complicated when it comes to bbq service. Â Friendly face at the counter, food out fast, refill your own drink at the station when required.
So let's get to food.
I went up here on a recommendation, specifically in regards to their brunswick stew.
So we ordered a meat sampler plate for the entire family entitled the "great bigun" which comes with all four meats (pulled pork, beef brisket, half chicken and ribs) and two sides. Â For our sides we ordered the brunswick stew, fried okra and added an order of fried pickles and broccoli slaw.
To the meat:
So as for the meat, it was all dry as dry could be other than the dark meat on the 1/2 chicken. Â Decent smoke flavor, but when the meat you are eating requires sauce in order for it to make it down your throat, I am just not excited about it. Â Meat should stand on its own, and this was just hard to swallow.
It would be one thing if the chicken breast was dry, but dry meat was across the board; pork, ribs, brisket, chicken.
To the sides:
Broccoli slaw was exceptionally sweet and full of what appeared to be maple bacon bits. Â Not my thing really, but I am sure other people might have a palate for it.
Fried Pickles were all right, nothing special. Â Served with a thousand island dressing which is also too sweet for my liking.
Okra was fine served with same thousand Island dressing.
The brunswick stew is as advertised. It is full of smoked meat and full of flavor. Â It was one of the best I have ever had and would order it again, but that is all I would order unfortunately.
Sauces:
I usually don't get too in depth about sauces, but they were required due to the dry meat.
Original (sweet): Good for the KC bbq lover. Â I just prefer a little zip in my sauce
Carolina: Standard, nothing special.
Tangy: This sauce was pretty good. Â A little heat and definitely tangy. Â Best of the bunch.
Hot: Â Definitely packs a punch and could see this on some wings.
Summary:
Not going out of my way but if happen to be hungry and driving by will order a large bowl of that brunswick stew!!
Just when I think I've had the best...
-Staff energetic, fast, helpful (saying a lot because both times I've been here crowds lines out the door entire visit)
-Cleanliness is far above normal for BBQ
-Prices are right in line with BBQ joints
-Meat flavored, moist, smoked, and pulled:)
-Sauces it what makes this my new fav,
Talking rock tangy is like a sweet and sour, the sure-nuff-hot defies human possibilities best tasting it is sweet with a come back spice of about 8 bites... Then you die:D the hot and sweet sweep the floor with other joints
-The sides are all just as good
-They have a large menu and everything the waitresses walked by with looked awesome
-Hunt excuses to go here;D
All of the BBQ was excellent! We had chic, pork and brisket and all of that was yummy! The corn muffin was delicious too! Sauces were good, hot one was kickin! Sides were our least favorite. Collards were ok. Mac n cheese not that good, tasted like Velveeta out of box. Fried mushrooms were OK, not that much flavor. Â Still would recommend eating here if in the area and craving BBQ!
Review Source:Biguns is an incredible BBQ find. Really good BBQ at an incredible price. I had the special of the day. Which was a sliced pork BBQ plate with choice of bread, drink, and two sides. I had cornbread, macaroni and cheese, and Brunswick Stew.
The sliced pork was very good with an excellent smoked flavor and color. They had an excellent selection of Biguns sauces, hot, sure enough hot, carolina, tangy, original, and sweet.
The Brunswick stew was amongst the best I have had anywhere. The cornbread was also excellent and some of the best I have had. The macaroni and cheese was only descent.
The service was also excellent. The place was very clean also, and all for $6.99.
Overall I would recommend Biguns without hesitations.
It is now possible to satisfy my craving for authentic bar-b-que when I come back to visit my childhood home of Jasper, Georgia. Â Corn bread muffins are moist and delicious. Â Great fried okra and Brunswick Stew. Â Ribs were smoked well and had lots of meat on the bone. Â There were also at least five different regional sauces to satisfy every taste. Â Good stuff.
Review Source:What a pleasant surprise - a really good BBQ joint in a Shell gas station in Taking Rock, GA right on I 575 (515). The staff are friendly, the service reasonably quick and the food is very good. I've had the pulled pork and the pork ribs, both moist with a nice honest smokey flavor that isn't overwhelming.
The sides that I and others in my party have had have all been very good. On their best days, their ribs are as good as I've had in a long time and the pulled pork is rock solid. On their worst days, their both above average. They have a wide selection including chicken (grilled and smoked), hamburgers, and other sandwiches, wings, etc. I tried the smoked chicken once and it was dry and tough. Â If you're in the neighborhood, they are definitely worth trying.
