Been vacationing in the DCL area for about 10 years now and this place is always on our must stop map. Food is decent & beer selection is good. Atmosphere is what makes this place so much fun. a good mix of locals and of tourists and everyone getting along, drinking & having fun. Great way to kill a Saturday evening!
Review Source:Went there sunday for dinner. I ordered a burger and a coke. The coke was served in a plastic cup and the burger was a good bit overdone. Finished our meal and waited for the check for a half hour. Â They weren't even busy and there were 3 servers working ( maybe 6 or 7 tables). I asked for the check and waited another 10 minutes.
Used to like this place. Will not go back. The worst service I've had.
While on a getaway to Deep Creek, I stopped in the Black Bear one night when one of the bars was having live music and the other bar was empty. I grabbed a drink and a quick bite, but after both I decided to not stay. The food was fine, very pricey drink was watered down. I wish I looked at the reviews before I stopped there. Stay away, there are better places in the area.
Review Source:Went here for lunch, which was better than regular bar food. The pink dragon cocktail is amazing, and their desserts are great too.
I know from friends that this is the only place in town where you will find the visiting 20-somethings when it comes to night life. Black Bear is a favorite among our friends during the winter ski season.
I would affectionately call Black Bear a great dive. There is nothing fancy but it has great character, good bar food and decent prices. The Chesapeake Bay wings are tasty and they have a good steak salad (which they'll add fries to if you ask). The deck is great people watching and usually has good entertainment on Saturdays in the summer. It is a great mix of locals and tourists. It's been my experience that everyone is nice if you are. I haven't been to the dance club next door but the crowd milling around waiting for it open look like a dressed up version of the crowd at the bar. Black Bear reminds you that, despite the big houses and fast boats, McHenry is still a small town.
Review Source:I went here for a steak after a long outdoors day. It was pretty disappointing, but it was my only choice after ruling out the overpriced $40 steak at the Pine Lodge steakhouse next door. Instead, I opted for a $20 steak here. I guess I got what I paid for. The steak was ok, similar to what you'd get at a chain like Sizzler or Ponderosa. The service was a bit laughable though. I asked for Ranch on my salad, she brought out vinaigrette. When I asked, she said "I thought you said vinaigrette?" I reminded her we'd discussed how the ranch was house-made. "Oh yeah," she said. Then she brought out my steak with mashed potatoes. I reminded her I'd asked for baked potato. She went back to ask the chef ... they were out of baked, so they just substituted. Oh well. Then I had a crab cake coming. But it didn't show up. The chef had dropped it on the floor. "Never mind," I said. All in all, I wasn't too disappointed, because it's not the kind of place to have high expectations about. But it would have been nice to see some competence too.
Review Source:Overall experience was okay. Sat on the deck outdoor at a big table which was really nice because we didn't have to wait to be seated or be seated at separate tables with our group of 8. The grilled shrimp, crab cakes and onion rings were all great, but some of the others in our group did not care for their meals. While the food is not too pricey, the portions are not very big either which may leave some unsatisfied.
We went on a Sunday night so it wasn't too crazy but the people that were there were ... interesting folk. We could definitely tell the locals from the tourists...some had set up a beer pong table right beside our group during our meal....so that was entertaining and a little ghetto. Â The service was pretty good and we didn't have to wait that long for our food. Their alcohol prices seemed pretty decent/average.
Alright... minimally, it was FANTASTIC people-watching!!! Â LOL
I had a good time; I would go back
PROS:
this is the only real "night life" for the younger (21-mid 30's crowd) @ the Lake for the tourist-types.
Really great People watching.
They get live bands
Drinks weren't very pricey
CONS:
if you're from Pittsburgh, its kind-of-a laughable experience.
The best part of the evening there was watching the old creepy poon-hounds trying to hit on the old creepy cougars that wondered into this joint! Â LOL
They drank, they danced, they were marry.... LOL.
Otherwise, this place is going to be as fun as you make it.
It wasn't bad, but you're Stranger-Danger experience awaits! Â LOL
Mostly tourists, many locals.
I came here a couple times when I would go snowboarding at Wisp. It was the only place close by the resort to hang out. I've only been at night. There's two rooms- one for playing pool, a bar, some arcade games and food. The other had a dance floor, a band and a bar. This room would get pretty crowded. Drinks weren't too expensive and they have karaoke on Thursday nights. I have not been on karaoke night, but would like to check it out next time and will let you know. Overall it's a fun place to just kick it.
