The beer is pretty good, and the building itself is pretty neat looking for a german style brew pub, except for most of the restaurant being unlit because it is large and there were only 6 people in there the evening I went.  There is no menu to speak of (my choices were pizza, cheeseburger, bratwurst, or steak), and the food I did order (steak with nasty seasoned fries and a skimpy salad), was pretty sad.  If you are a brewery with a half decent menu and pretty good beer people will come.  if you are a brewery with a terrible menu and pretty good beer you will get a few unsatisfied stragglers.  I would go back for the beer the next time I am in town, but would eat somewhere else.

Thank you for joining us at our first Taste of West Virginia event in Washington, D.C. Special thank you to Dr. Lincoln Wilkins Jr. and the staff for being so hospitable. I really enjoyed your light brew! Hope you can join us next year!

If you are going just for the beer, it was terrific.  The food, not so much.  I got the trout and it was under seasoned and just all right.  The hubby got the snitzle and again, just all right.  The food is nothing spectacular.  The beer however...we got a light ale and (forgive me if that is not the right way to say it but I am no beer expert) was just fabulous!  It was light and crisp.  I would say stop for the beer, not the food.

This place is under new management. The beer, food, and atmosphere are great. Only complaint was the service was pretty slow.

We stayed in Davis over Labor Day Weekend.  On Sunday we stopped here for lunch.  It must have just opened for the day.  We were the second table in the whole place.  Within 20-30 minutes a few more tables came in.  We sat on the bar side.  It is a brewery, and you can see the large stainless tubs behind the bar.  The owner was behind the bar, you could hear him explaining the brew process to a couple of tourists.  My partner ordered their IPA, I ordered an Oktoberfest.  The beers were not very cold.  For lunch we order french onion soup, and we had a crab dip for an appetizer.  The crab dip is made with "some" imitation crab meat.  It was okay, but certain it comes in a big tub, not homemade.  It was served with a variety of crackers, and two pieces of french bread.  The soup was okay.  Again I do not think it was made from scratch.  I didn't get the impression anything on the menu was made from scratch.  It is a shame, I'm sure there is an abundance of local vegetables and proteins they could use.  Even the trout is not local. "It use to be, but not anymore".  The server was very nice.  The place seemed clean.  It would be very good if they upgraded their kitchen.

I'd always heard bad things about this place, so I go to Mountain State Brewery when I visit the Canaan Valley area instead. (Mountain State is AWESOME and is located only two miles down the road from Davis in Thomas, WV.) Just out of curiosity, however, I decided to stop by and get a growler of beer recently. BIG MISTAKE. The very little growler cost $21.20! By the owner's own admission, it held just a little more than 2 beers. That's about 30% more money for HALF the beer you get with a Mountain State growler. Look, you always want to say nice things about a microbrewery, but overpricing your product is just rude.

Incidentally,  I would concur with other reviewers who found the atmosphere of the brewery to be pretty terrible. Bright florescent lights totally dominate the bar area. Also, the beer is only so-so.

C'mon, Blackwater Brewery! Read these reviews and get your act together!

I'd give the beers 3.5 stars, the food 2.5-3 stars, the service 5 stars.  My partner and I came here on a recent trip to Canaan Valley. It's one of the few options in town.  We sat at the bar and had the opportunity to chat extensively with the new owner/proprietor.  He was incredibly nice and enthusiastic about his new venture, and it sounds like he has some really good plans for the place, which influenced my rating a bit. The waitresses were also attentive and friendly. Of the beers, we really liked the marzen, a nice amber beer with well-balanced flavor. The golden ale was pretty good, a basic light-colored, light-bodied beer. The porter was okay, a bit hoppy for a porter, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just a surprise. The food .... was just okay.  I'd like to say better things, but that wouldn't be truthful.  We both ordered from the German offerings.  My stuffed cabbage was decent, though luke warm, but I didn't much care for the spatzel (seemed a little pasty) or the red sauerkraut (too sweet for my taste).  My partner got the bratwurst and chose the salad and fries as his side dishes.  His food was good - not bad, not fantastic. I suspect that one might do better here ordering a sandwich or a burger. However, it sounds like the new owner is something of a foodie, so hopefully over time he will implement some positive changes to the menu. As for the environment, the place is cozy and comfortable, and the prices are reasonable. It's also nice that there's a separate game area; it's a good place for families with kids. We didn't eat anywhere else in town so I can't compare it to any others in the area. Thanks to the beer and hospitality it was a nice respite from the limited offerings at the resort. I'd definitely stop here again if I'm ever in the area in the future, as I suspect the place will improve over time under the new management.

Rather disappointed in this place really. The second star came from a decent schnitzel that I had (the jaeger). The rest of the food was ok, but the spaetzle was uninspired and pasty. Service was slow, even though there were only three tables in the bar area, with us being the first there.

The beer was the real disappointment. I got a flight of samples, and 4 out of the six were intolerably bad by microbrewery standards (all the light beers). The light beers were watery, under-carbonated and possibly stale. The IPA was the worst of those four, with an odd/off hop aroma and flavor that was almost soapy, underwhelming, under-powering and about the worst IPA I've ever had. The porter and the stout were tolerable, but again suffered under-carbonation and wateriness.

Given the stark comparison beer-for-beer to mountain state down the road, there is absolutely no reason in my mind to drink the beer here. But if you do, drink the darker beers on the menu.

The decor I guess gives it the first star, it's pretty charming and european on the inside with a great fireplace and open brewery behind the bar.

Kitchen got our order wrong. Waitress wrote it correctly. Food was overcooked and cold. Waitress left me with no drink while I was eating.

Good, considering the other options around, but not amazing.  Definitely recommend the burgers over the German food -- more flavorful.  The beers aren't bad, but make sure they're served cold - ours were a bit too warm/room temperature for our preferences.

I wish I'd read these reviews before wasting the time and money here. The worst service I've ever experienced. The chef dinner salad was a joke. Spatzel had no taste except for the nasty gravy ladled on top. Cabbage rolls are forgettable. Did I mention that the service was bad? They seem to cater to beer drinkers (pub food) - I'll give them one star for the slick (although deceiving) web page.

Beer was nothing special. Food was not
worth the price. Crab dip was imitation crab. For $10 it should have been real crab! Try any other bar and I would bet it is better.

The major downfalls of this place are the service and the food.

We stupidly thought we could find authentic German food here, and ordered the schnitzel and bratwurst. They don't make the brats in-house (am I spoiled?), the sauerkraut was straight outta can-pton and the spaetzel was freaking disgusting. The cucumber salad was OK but wreaked havoc on my sturdy insides.

It took us nearly 45 minutes to get any love from our server. Subsequent beers came equally slowly, as well as the food. When our meals finally arrived, one of the sides was forgotten.

The lightest house brew tasted more watery than Miller Lite, the Golden Ale was nothing to write home about. I wouldn't return.

Decent micro-brew.  Definitely come a sample their beer and bring a growler in case you want to take some home.

The German food average.  The Wiener Schnitzel was more like a breaded pork chop.

The interior is rustic and the lighting (especially in the bar area) is terrible.

    The service was average.

The food I've had here has been ok, but the beers are always fantastic.  Spend an afternoon enjoying the great outdoors in Canaan Valley and Blackwater Falls then kick back with some great brews.
