Had dinner there this evening and, at best, it was mediocre. Â Have eaten there several times in the past and it was just not the same. Really disappointed to spend that much money and have such a marginal meal. My wife felt the same. Â Not likely to return. Sadly, just not the same quality place for a nice dinner.
Review Source:A dozen great oysters to start, wonderful prime rib done perfectly medium rare, and an outstanding slab of ribs with BBQ cherry sauce.
Good service despite a crowd although the bus-boy needs a tune-up re picking up finished dishes promptly.
All this PLUS Great Music from Kenny Thompson.
Yeah. Â Tonight I went there for Father's Day. Â I ordered pork ribs. Â Waitress said .. oh yes they are a favorite here. Â Well, I cannot imagine why that might be. Â The meat (pork) was pink but the outside of the ribs was so blackened (not mentioned) that I couldn't chew the meat. Â I tried to peel off the
'skin' but all that was left was ugly and tiny bits of pink meat. Â It was actually disgusting. Â I almost vomited. Â Absolutely the WORST ribs I have ever been served. Â
Whipped potatoes with wasabi... no.. the flavor doesn't work. Â The asparagus was okay but nothing great. Â The bread, however, was warm and yummy.
My husband order the pork something or other... and he brought about two thirds of it home for our dog. Â He hated the sweet potatoes and the rice pilaf which he said was absolutely tasteless. Â
We are NEVER going back there to eat... EVER!
The waitress did comp my meal though so I felt somewhat better.. but hungry.
I do not recommend this place at all. Â This is about the 5th time we have tried one of the Blue Pelican restaurants in the area and each time, we have had a bad food experience. Â
They need a really good chef... I mean a good one who knows how to cook and combine foods.
This is the first time I've been here since they moved to the new location. Nice menu selections with foods popular in the area. Pleasant outdoor seating if desired on the grand porch. My initial optimism was jarred though when the waitress informed us that they had ran out of snapper for one of the specials and were substituting the same preparation with escolar fish. If your not familiar with escolar, I'll let you do your own research. Other than that, my wife and I shared the crab stuffed walleye. The stuffing was a bit bready but really a nice dish overall. My daughter had the chicken parmesan that also was nice.
Overall a pleasant experience. I would eat here again if in the area, but nothing to go our of your way for, just stay away from the escolar.
This restaurant is a gem. The food, wine selection, courteous nature of the staff, everything was just as I had hoped. Only complaint was that the portions of the superb pork shoulder were too big! Â Try the fried shrimp appetizer. Omg! Â Seriously folks, if you are in the area, avoid shanty creek and come to this fine establishment. It's food and hospitality rival that found in more cosmopolitan areas. And for reasonable prices considering what you get. Â Bravo guys!
Review Source:My family and I really like the blue pelican. I really dig their fresh perch and my brother always orders crab legs on his birthday. My mom sticks to the burgers and has really never looked back!
They carry the local beers (like the ones from shorts) and really celebrate the "up north" culture.
This restaurant moved to the former Lamplighter (Blue Pelican used to be on Torch Lake). Â The menu is expanded and the food is deliciuous. Â I had pulled pork in a cherry BBQ sauce that was so yummy I can't wait to eat my leftovers today -- the portions are LARGE. Â They also served wonderful corn bread muffins and one of the 4 of us at our table had their roll and said it was delicous. Â The service was a little slow but we've learned that out of season it's alot harder to have enough help to make everything go smoothly and quickly. Â And, even witht he slower swervice, we were all very happy we came.
Review Source:The Blue Pelican used to be on E. Torch Lake road but burned down and has now relocated to the old Lamplighter Inn  in Central Lake.  I was excited to try the Blue Pelican in its new location because when I was little we used to go to the Lamplighter (which used to have pizza and a jukebox in the basement) and I had very fond memories there...So my review-Everyone was friendly from the moment we walked in, we had a reservation but came a little early because we were starving and they got us right in (we were a party of six).  We ordered the clam corn chowder first...it was good my only complaint is it was warm not hot.  For an appetizer my husband and I ordered a firecracker crab cake (which is a slightly spicier version of the regular crabcake), the crab cake was fine but the Mango salsa/relish that came with it was AWESOME and I am not even a mango fan!! I wished we would have had a little more on the plate.  My mom and dad split the pulled pork quesadilla and thought it was good and a pleasant change from chicken quesadilla.  My husband and I split a half rack of ribs and they give you the option of dried rub or bbq sauce....we could not agree so they gave us dry rub ribs with the cherry bbq sauce of the side.  The ribs were fine-I thought they were a little dry but my husband really like them.  I on the other hand LOVED the cherry bbq sauce and used them for a dipping sauce for my ribs AND fries.  The only downer to our meal was they did not bring the coleslaw with the ribs and by the time we said something it was too late and we just cancelled it.  My kids meals were fine, one ordered mac and cheese (but didn't love the glop of cheese melted on top of it) the other ordered buttered noodles with cheese.  We did not order dessert because we had 3 pies at home waiting for us but there dessert tray looked fabulous (especially the chocolate panna cotta).  The service was friendly a few minor glitches-never bringing the fresh bread basket (after telling us they were just waiting for it to come out of the oven) and not bringing the cole slaw.  All in all it was a good meal and we would go back.  When leaving we noticed they had outside seating on the porch with entertainment...if we had noticed this earlier I would have definitely asked to sit outside.
