Went to this place for lunch as we were passing through on our way back from camping and wow, this place did not disappoint!  The food was great, good amount too and prices were good and service was excellent.  The pie was incredible.  Worth a stop for sure.  They were also great with our kids and super friendly.

Bluebird Cafe is a quaint, retro kind of place that you'll come back to again and again. Sunday breakfast is delightful but be prepared to wait a bit because the place is packed! But it's definitely worth the wait.  The breakfast menu is filled with delicious, creative omelets and scrambles among the standard bill of fare - pancakes, waffles, eggs, and a variety of sides.  And as an added bonus, you'll get lovely complimentary homemade pastries while you wait for your order to come.

Lunch doesn't disappoint; there are many delightfully creative sandwiches to try. With servings more than generous, you'll find yourself overeating... or not. There's always plenty to take home! And as has been written previously, the pies are fabulous...and likely to be gone by early afternoon! They're that good!

It's our go-to place when driving though Hopland.

I had the best lunch of my life here.

Stopping on a whim as we drove to STS from Arcata, it was a dream come true. Local beer and a Buffalo Burger for me, a French Dip with real au jus for my boy. Topped the whole thing off with Blackberry pie, and we were fans for life.

Not only was the food incredible, and the waitresses awesome, but the side salad was delicious. We both ate every last bite on our plates and felt grateful to have stopped in such a perfect lunch spot.

There are Elk and Wild Boar burgers on the menu too. I love that.

I've been going to this place for years. It has never let me down until recently. I'm not sure what is going on. Or, maybe I am. The last time i was there, the food was no good one in our party got pretty sick. I went to use the restroom and was told by the waitress that there were "problems" in the men's room so i should go ahead and use the ladies room. No big deal. However when I came out of the ladies room I saw the same dude who had just cooked my food come out of the men's room with a plunger, a bottle of bleach and a scrub brush.  He walked right into the kitchen with his "tools". Not sure at what point he washed up but it did not look good.  It is too bad but I'm not sure I'm going to be going back.

Nice that they've got game on the menu. That's about the end of it. Avoid.

The Bluebird is a refreshing place to stop and enjoy a meat.  Home made food from real fresh ingredients.  The mushroom blue cheese burger was fantastic as was the service and the food.  I am going to make this a regular travel oasis stop

Bluebird Cafe is a super cute roadside joint that is famous for it's pie. I think I should have ordered the pie because my burger was not quite fame worthy. You might want to indulge in some of the region's famous product before you dine. I've been told it makes everything taste amazing. Service was great and the dining room has that old time-y feel, so I'll give Bluebird another whirl next time I'm passing through Hopland.

If you're headed down the road, this diner is a fine place to stop.  The service is a little bit uneven, and they have canned corned beef hash; other than that, the food is delicious, there are fresh pies in the case, and the portions are generous.  Consider sitting outside in nice weather, since the dining room can be crowded.

    Bathroom is clean and roomy!

I have often stopped here for breakfast or lunch on the way to/from the rest of Mendocino County, and highly recommend the Bluebird for the variety of its excellent fare. Most recently I was blown away by the biscuits and gravy (definitely try it!), but in the past have very much enjoyed the burgers and shakes--definitely a cut above.

Also, it's usually uncrowded and I have never had to wait for a table, even for Sunday brunch.

sung to the tune of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas"

    IIIII'm dreeeeeeaming.... of some Piiiiiiiiii-iiiiiiiie
Just like the ones... I ate... a month... agooooo
    Where the fill-ing is waa-arrrm
    and the iiiiice.... cream... cooollld

The blackberry pie was so amazing.  It reminded me of blackberry cobbler which made my Southern heart go pitter-patter.

It was so good.... I keep thinking about it.... and then craving it.  If you like yourself at all, do yourself a favor and go order the blackberry pie.  My friends ordered the apple pie and the strawberry-rhubarb.... in my opinion, the blackberry was best.

quick tip - for breakfast, we ordered the biscuits and gravy.... huge portions!  The three of us could have shared one order.  I couldn't even eat half of it I was so full.

What a little gem, set aside the road on my route from the Bay to Humboldt county. I was treated to a special lunch here on the way home, and the meal was generous enough to keep me full through dinner!
I ordered the chicken sandwich with bacon, and the real surprise was the bun: toasted and seasoned to perfection and robust enough to hold in the juicy chicken breast smothered in melty cheese. It was lovely. The burger that my dining buddy ordered was massive, and looked just as juicy and had some heft to it.
I'm told the breakfasts are the real draw here, and I'm excited to have an excuse to return.

This place is a gem in the middle of scenic nowhere. The boyfriend and I came here two days in a row and both times knocked our socks off. Sunday afternoon, looking over the lunch menu, the game burgers looked incredible but we both decided on a french dip. The au jus was flavorful and the meat was tender. Monday morning came too soon, and we needed some road food to hold us over 'til SF. They were thankfully still serving from the breakfast menu. We shared a heaping plate of biscuits & gravy covered in scrambled eggs, side of bacon. The gravy was creamy rich with flavor, the biscuits were soft & yummy, the bacon was thick and crispy but not burned. It's a damn good thing there's no food like this in LA or I'd be in biiiiiiig trouble!

I had my doubts but this spot is gooo-ooo-ood!  you'll notice the beeline straight for the home made pies upon entering.  People come and sit but most come and go with baked pies in their hands.  The smells wafting from within are enough to keep you salivating for more.

My group of 4 were sat right by the door.  Bad decision since the door constantly opens and closes.  After all it is one of the only places in Hopland worth checking out.  The portions are large and the free goodies that are set before you as you patiently wait for your meal are sent from heaven.  Blueberry scones and cinnamon buns... you're joking right?

Bluebird is no joke.  Check it out for yourselves and leave with at least 1 pie.

I stopped in to Bluebird Cafe for lunch. The server was very friendly. The weather was gorgeous, so we sat out back, but she didn't forget about us. (Tip: They have a nice back patio, which it doesn't seem that too many patrons know about...we had the space to ourselves.)

I had the wild boar burger (the waitress recommended it over the elk burger), and my companion tried the salmon or turkey burger.  We also had milkshakes.

Everything took awhile to arrive. The shakes were great...the burgers, not so much. Not terrible, but not amazing, either. They were a little bit overcooked and bland, though the apricot sauce that came with my burger was pretty decent.

Bottom line: If I was paying $5 for this meal (ie In-N-Out Burger), it'd be 5 stars. But for the prices, I would have expected a little higher quality food. In San Francisco, this would be a 3-star restaurant...but in middle-of-nowhere Hopland, it's probably the best of the available options.

One can't help but be charmed by this cute roadside eatery.  Lured by its old time chic and the fact that it is really the only quality restaurant in Hopland right now, I would have to say that this is a solid option when you make your way North on Hwy 101.  Sophisticated fare it is not, but reliable breakfast deliciousness it is.  Pancakes resembling hub caps can be very distracting!

I am well aware there is a lunch menu with exotic burgers, but I have not had the good fortune to be around at the appropriate time.  I am a fool for a shake, so maybe I will have to make more of an effort

    Service is fast and friendly.

So I had the wild boar burger, wife had reg burger.  Patties are frozen, not fresh, potato salad was bleh.  We ate half our plates, then ordered pe.  Wow, pie rocks!  So I give it 3 stars, as an average of 1 star for burgers, 5 stars for pie.

Would I come back?  Would love to, but only for pie.

3 slices of pie.  That's all folks.  We had planned to stay for lunch but they closed 6 minutes before we pulled up.  Guess we looked pretty pathetic, so they let us in anyway.   Really nice!

Mr B gave them a sob story about how far we'd driven JUST FOR THE PIE!    Well, they didn't need to know the whole story.  We WERE a very long way from home, we didn't realize how early they closed, but we also were on our way to Napa where Mr B could get sloshed (my impression, not his), wine tasting, ya know.

Well...and BC was definitely on my Yelper handy dandy bookmark list.....!

It worked. Got my pie slices..... x3.

The best pie, the strawberry rhubarb.  Sweet and tart.  The crust, wonderful.  That was their last piece.  Bam!

The blackberry pie, a bit disappointing.  I can't believe I am saying this, it wasn't sweet enough.  The berries were rather bland.

The pumpkin pie was more like a pumpkin mousse.  Excellent combination of spice but I am not a fan of mousse consistency.

There were more flavors.  Guess we will have to go back.  I love you, BC.

Tried to stop here for brunch on the way to humboldt but it was closed by 2pm.   On the way home it was open for dinner so we stopped.
My boyfriend and I orderd the burger and fries and a milkshake to share.

Milkshake was good.   We both asked for our burgers Medium and they came out well done:-( and they had Mayo on them!!!!   yuck. Since when do burgers come with mayo???

Fries were ok.  Service was good.

I guess I would stop here  again if I was hungry.

Stopped here for lunch the other day, and was pleasantly surprised. Didn't try anything exotic, but the food was good, the coffee was fresh, the waitress was very sweet, service was fast, and the portions were HUGE. Unfortunately, that last fact ruled out trying any of the pies.
Next time, I'll skip lunch and fill up on coffee and pie instead.

Small town America cafe with great food and what looks like delicious pies(I didn't have any because of Lent).

    * for nice server who was polite and knowledgable.
** for great food. My Club sandwich was huge and came with a very tasty side salad with vinaigrette. The sourdough bread was lightly toasted with crisp thick bacon. I wish it had more turkey , less bacon and more mayo, but the salad brought everything together.
    *Decor.

This place feels a bit lacking with culture as my friend and I were the only ethnic people here. A few weird, staring looks, but nothing to fuss over.

    Overall the experience was good.

Walk in, grab a magazine in the magazine holder near the door, and park yourself next to the mounted moose head for some enthralling conversation.  Just kidding.  The moose does not talk.

This was the only restaurant that I could see in Downtown Hopland and its a pretty swell place.  The 1/2 pound beef and exotic meat burgers were pretty expensive.  I dropped $7 to split the buffalo burger with a friend and only avoided remaining hungry by filling up on wine and fruit earlier.  That's Mendocino for ya.

The REAL deal here is the pie, specifically the Banana Cream Pie.  Every day, they are handmade and put for sale.  I typically don't eat the cream on top of the banana cream pie because it's too sweet or too heavy, but THIS particular pie was perfect in every way!  From the crumbly graham cracker crust, to the tasty pudding, bananas bananas, and sweet, airy cream on top, this pie is a winner.

So to recap:  pass on the burgers, go for the pie.  That's not just my sweet tooth talking.

We stopped here for a late lunch on our way home from Boonville. The restaurant was pretty crowded so we sat at the counter where we could see everybody's meals being passed from the kitchen. Everything looked good!  I had a buffalo burger and my wife had a BBQ beef sandwich. Both were delicious - best were the french fries which were perfectly fried.

-1 Star for being a little pricey. Most lunch sandwiches and burgers were $12+

The Bluebird is an institution if you drive 101 through the area regularly.  I've been here many, many times, mostly for breakfast.  The food is good, better than normal breakfasts.  If you come early enough you get a basket of pastries with your meal (I think that's the "worth it" part- I am so disappointed when they run out of them on weekends in the summer).

The moose head is a bit much, but here we are in Mendo County, so yep- that's appropriate.  I stay away from the tables directly under it- better to admire from afar!

The staff is all wonderful, always, no exceptions.  The place is neat and clean.  I like it.  That's the main reason to stop here for a meal.

How would you feel if you went to your friend's country home, spattered across the walls with cheaply framed dreams of one day becoming a photographer, and then she made you a salad - pretty good - and had her son make you some chili - not tasty, doubtfully a good effort, either - and then she charged you for it?  $10.50 for the salad, $7 for the chili.

    Well, that's how I felt.

Stopped in on the way back from Lake Mendocino because the exceptional taco truck near the Valero wasn't there.

The Mendocino "buffalo" chili was horrible, it tasted like a can and a microwave had a beanie baby. And there was no buffalo to be found. Maybe PETA's trying to send me a message.

But the waitress was super nice and took it back and off the bill (and I hardly ever send food back). In her defense, she had advised against it, but she only said that it didn't look good, which was the wrong question to ask about a buffalo chili.

The salad was good but pricey, and the photographs and mounted moose head on the wall were heartwarming. Whoever mounted this restaurant's decor really did a down-home country job of it.

S and I were coming back from Mendocino, and I really wanted to try this place. It was too early for lunch, so we stopped for Brunch/Breakfast.

S had corn beef hash and eggs; he thought it could use a bit more spice His side order of biscuits were only lukewarm.

I really prefer leftovers for breakfast so I looked for or a traditional diner item and luckly they had chicken fried steak, a road trip  favorite, on the menu and it filled the plate and almost hid the eggs that were on the plate. I gave the yellow things to S and he was happy

The country potatoes were not greasy and the free pastries that they brought to the table were very good.

Yet another semi-random Lost Coast trip find.  On the way up, passing through Hopland I saw the huge sign for "California's First Microbrewery".  Well, this creates some level of intrigue for me right off the bat.  Since we'd already taken our highway sign recommendation for Ukiah Brewing Co for dinner that night, I thought that maybe this would be a great place to meet up on the way home, after a 25 mile backpack on the coast.  Brilliant!

We threw the idea out to the group and all thought it sounded reasonable.  Somebody also mentioned that there was this restaurant across the road from the brew pub that served bison burgers.  Even better!

By the time we got down to Hopland, Mendocino Brewing was long since closed, but Bluebird had a little while left to provide us with some tasty post-backpacking grub.  We were a little taken aback at the $10.50 price tag on the "appetizer" beer battered and fried mushrooms and onions.  When the plate showed up, though, and it was piled to the sky with both mushrooms and onion rings, we felt a little better.  I mean, really, on the menu it even says "good food, large portions, reasonable prices".  So far so good!

Our burgers showed up eventually - 2 bison, a veggie burger, and a chicken sandwich with sundried tomatoes and artichokes.  All very tasty, everybody was happy.  It's too bad they closed at 8pm, leaving our other vehicles out of luck to make it there in time.  They had to suffer through Taco Bell instead.

Their pies also looked good, but after gorging on the fried goodness and our burgers, nobody had the appetite for one.  Next time!

I was on my way to Oregon...and it hit me....I NEEDED to stop! And there it was....the Bluebird Cafe!

I was warmly greeted, and told to "seat myself"...this is an uber-cute rustic building, the cafe is casual and inviting.

Besides food, one of my most important issues when traveling are clean restrooms...for me, and the staff.  Made a pit stop in the very clean restroom...YAY!!!

I decided on a grilled chicken, walnut, feta cheese and red onion salad. It was huge...and sooo fresh...I understand they use all organic fixins'. The chicken just melted in my mouth...this was just wonderful.

Being on the road, I appreciated that the check came fast...and my server was so cheerful.

I took a piece of apple pie to go...too full, and I wanted to share with my BGF in Oregon. We had it after dinner...I thought it was a bit sweet...almost caramel like filling...but the crust was perfect....

My new, favorite stop on highway 101!!!!

This is an 'institution' in this part of Mendo county, but we had yet to try it. [Had breakfast once at the Bluebird in Ukiah-  eh, I didn't like it.  It seemed dirty, had flies, rude wait people].  So when we [ my hubbie & our sister & brother in law ] were out checking out Real Goods & some wineries, this place seemed a good choice for lunch.

We were right.  It wasn't very crowded for a Saturday-- I think breakfast is the big draw here.  Very nice wait staff, with quick & polite service. Nice diner with tables & counter service; seemed clean & bright.  And looking over the menu, so many different, unusual choices & lots of standards. I was dying for a diet coke, and to me a tuna salad sandwich on sour dough & potato salad looked mighty good.  John picked the same thing!, only a melt. So we were the pure 'Americana order'!  Joe & Mary Lou were the adventurous ones and had an Ahi bowl[ rice with coconut milk, veggies] and with peanut sauce and a Wild Boar burger.  We all loved our choices.

So I'm glad we tried and like this place.  Now we know where to try breakfast on a trip out of town occasionally.

If I had never set foot into either one of their restaurants, this would be a 4 star review because, really, I can't think of anywhere that makes a better salmon or turkey burger.  What ruins it for me is the smell and feel of the restaurants themselves (both Ukiah and Hopland location)

It's not the out dated, cheap looking decor, that I can deal with....It's the fact that it just does not smell, look or feel clean!  It smells musty and moldy, so much so that it overpowers the smell of the food!  The silverware has been too dirty to use many times, the boyfriend has found hair in his pasta, and the out of control amount of flies in the place just really gives me the heebie jeebies!

The Hopland location is slightly better than the Ukiah...but not good enough for me to want to eat there.

On the way back from a camping trip in Mendicino, me and my crew wanted to hit up the mendo brew pub in Hopland. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) they don't serve food and suggested we cross the street and try Bluebird.

What a great decision that turned out to be as Bluebird totally hit the spot. Great burgers (I had an organic grass fed beef burger), vegetarian food, shakes, sandwiches, local beers and wines can be found here. The staff was super friendly and quick to handle a group of 14 starving campers. Its also easy to find - its right off the 101 as you go through downtown Hopland. Bluebird will certainly be a recurring destination for me on my adventures in Northern California.

Bluebird Cafe is right on highway 101 as it wends through Hopland. Small, old-timey feel, complete with a moose overlooking one nook of the dining room.

The fare is far from average, and so are the prices. Lots of organic choices on the menu, and lots of far-out game to choose from as well. I had the Masut organic beef burger, Mama Q had the buffalo, and Little Q stuck with chicken tenders from the kids' menu. The burgers were good, but not $12/each good.

Mama Q's soup, however, was stunning. Amazing combination of flavors. If you get a burger, don't get the fries. Yes, they are wonderful, crispy fries. But you'll be missing out on the opportunity to get the soup.

If you are driving between Mendo & the Bay Area you will not find a better place to stop for a quick bite. Right on the highway, easy parking, and a truly diverse menu for a diner. Just be prepared to spend City money on country food.

I've been here 3 times already. I stop over on the way home from my road trips out to the Redwoods and I just love it. The food boasts of serving organic products, grass fed beef, and Mendocino grown produce. They have food for the meat eaters and veggie heads alike! They have all the meat you can think of Elk, Buffalo, Cow, Salmon, Turkey, Ostrich? It even serves Humboldt Original Hemp Ale. Which, by the way, only legal in California - possibly a cool advertising ploy. Yes, I did buy a six pack of the Hemp Ale. Don't worry veg heads, the salads are huge, organic, and amazing.

This was a very significant meal for me because the following day, I was going to have all four wisdom teeth extracted. So, I pigged out without any hesitation.

CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE - Yum! Who cares if I'm allergic to dairy? I'll just have a handful of Lactaid.

SALAD WITH PESTO BALSAMIC - Can I get this dressing in a bottle? So....good.

BUFFALO BURGER - Locally raised and organic! Who cares if I don't like eating beef. The buffalo burger was EXCELLENT. Lean and high in protein. Order it with grilled onions for no extra charge. I lean towards a no beef diet, but I just couldn't resist!

    FRENCH FRIES - Yum!

As I was eating my buffalo burger, I was staring straight at a giant moose head on the wall. Talk about guilt! But, then I turned the other way and saw this cute little girl with glasses trying to stick her straw up her nose. Yup, another great visit to Bluebird Cafe!

It is like a time warp coming into this place.  Exactly how I pictured it... long counter of locals that eat there at least twice a week, small kitchen with a little pass through packed with breakfast foods, and waitress' that knew everyone in the join (but me).

Service was down home and loving. The waitress working the counter could see that I had been drinking pink wine all night the night before and needed something to fill up the rotting pit that I once called my stomach.  The scramble was good and the potatoes were better.  Coffee was exactly what I knew it would be (pretty bad).

To top off the old school vibe of the place I saw the person sitting next to me write a check for his breakfast.  I haven't seen a check at a restaurant in... fuck.  I haven't seen a check in a restaurant! The server didn't bat an eye.
