I'll admit from the start that it's not fair to rate a business on one single experience, but when that single experience prompted us to walk out before our meal came, I probably should mention it.

Long story short, we are Coloradans who come through Fairplay regularly and decided to stop and eat here. Very small place, so noise carries. We were unfortunate enough to be seated in a booth next to an employee (a busser) who stood at the next booth and loudly talked and talked and talked to the diners seated there with absolutely no regard for those diners (all but one of whom were clearly ignoring her so she would go away) nor the diners at the two adjacent booths. I'm talking 5-10 minutes. Finally my wife and I moved to a table at the farthest end, making eye contact with the diners in the other booth who rolled their eyes, also put off by this employee.

Our server found us after we moved and apologized, but do you think she or anyone there asked the loud employee to get back to work or to hold it down? Nope. We finally got up and walked out, quietly informing our waitress and another adult employee why we were leaving. Oh sorry, they both said, while the Loud One continued to chatter away. Not the owner, mind you, but a busser.

There aren't that many places in tiny Fairplay to eat but we found the South Park Steakhouse two blocks away and were delighted. We'll go there instead each time we dine in Fairplay.

Our favorite place in Fairplay for breakfast.  The breakfast sandwiches and the breakfast burritos are our favorites.  Great, friendly staff always takes care of our needs.  Even with a line sometimes, you can get in and out pretty quick if you want.  Check out the wall map and make sure you drop a pin in the map for your home town.  Can't miss spot for breakfast........I can't comment on lunch or dinner as we have not eaten there during those times.  You may want to call ahead and make sure they are open as they close in the off season sometimes.

What's not to love? The best rellenos in Colorado and great little scene. If you're just blowing through by motorcycle or car, there's the coffee/ice cream shop next door. One of my favorite roadside eateries.

After the ten minute tour of the Park County Jail, I asked my colleague, a deputy Sheriff where to eat. Nothing fancy mind you, and it would be silly to expect something fancy in Fairplay. Just good burgers and the like.

    Without hesitation, the Brown Burro.

It was a nice and relaxing afternoon. In the background one could hear the Petyon Manning Broncos trouncing the Raiders, always an aid to good digestion. Out the windows were autumn views of South Park spectacular.

Owner was there, kindly assisting my enfeebled mother-in-law to her seat.

Simple fresh items on the menu. Wait staff was attentive. Got the brief review of the history of the restaurant. Nice rustic atmosphere.

My wife had the fish and chips. More than she could eat. Rated good. She loved the onion rings.

Mother-in-law had BLT. It, along with the fries, disappeared.

I had the Mexican hamburger. I prefer green chili on the hot side and this did not quite hit the nail on the head there. But the chili was delicious and the salsa added another dimension to a very good burger. The patty was thick and cooked to perfection.

I will make it a point to stop here for lunch when we visit Breckenridge, which is literally just over Hoosier pass. Next time business takes me through South Park, can't wait to try the breakfast menu.

A great place to stop for lunch in Fairplay.

They do a damn tasty Patty Melt.

Whoever wrote these stellar reviews didn't have a Mexican lunch there at 2:00 on a Saturday - effing slop which obviously sat out since lunchtime started.  They should be ashamed of their hot sauce, salsa, old rice & beans, and salty chips.  Why didn't they just say that crap wasn't available; to pick an American menu item instead?

This is a great little place with friendly wait staff and solid home cooking. The patty melt was home made and delicious.  If you are driving through and hungry definitely stop in. You won't regret it.

Hit the Burro on one of our big breakfast mornings, and were not disappointed.  My huevos rancheros met the standard, and omelettes and breakfast burritos also got good reviews at our table.  Pancake sides disappeared quickly.  Coffee was meh, but good enough.  Fun atmosphere, and very friendly and helpful waitstaff.  If you want more pretension, head north to Breck -- otherwise, this place works just fine, thank you...

Fast service and friendly with helpful waitstaff. I came in with a party of six, four of whom ordered the Huevos Rancheros. Everyone spoke positively about the Huevos, though personally I thought they looked rather unappetizing - sort of li...ke a runny, oversized cow patty. Perhaps the cow had been grazing on grass fed by a contaminated Artesian well? At any rate, it just goes to show that you can't judge a book by its cover since everyone agreed that they tasted yummy. Extra points for the homemade salsa, which also garnered spontaneous praise.

The battered cod was a different story. "Beaten" or "neglected" would have been better descriptors than "battered." The poor fish pieces were hidden under a catcher's mitt of deep fried breading but the cod (not known for being the most flavorful seafood on Earth to begin with) was pretty bland. And wet. It seemed to be...I don't know...weeping? Leaking? At any rate, it couldn't be salvaged by the cocktail sauce because there wasn't any. And despite what well-meaning friends and family members might tell you, ketchup and jalapeño sauce mixed together is NOT the same thing as cocktail sauce. The tartar sauce came in individual packets, which was good since I hate tartar sauce and I didn't have to feel guilty about not eating it (or at least making it look like I had tried it, which I would have had to do if it had been served naked on the side).

The fries were ghostly white, very thin, and disturbingly limp. I felt dirty and ashamed just looking at them, but I believe they have potential. Thicker, more robust cuts and a little longer swim in the deep end of the fryer and those fries wouldn't look so wimpy and get picked on so much.

Overall, though, The Brown Burrow was a decent place to eat. Quick, friendly service with good portions and reasonable prices.

This place is a family favorite! The food is pretty good, we've eaten here for dinner lunch, and for breaskfast, and found everything to be really tasty. Breakfast is my favorite, the kids like lunch best, but overall everyone is always really pleased with everything. The staff are great: prompt, friendly, and really good with kids. The atmosphere is great too, eclectic and cozy come to mind, but doesn't feel cramped or too small, and the courtyard just outside was a nice place to sit with the kids before and after, espescially my antsy 5 year old :) My only advice: watch out that you don't walk out TOO full!

What an excellent surprise! I was very wary of this restaurant because I prefer "authentic" Mexican food. I was still wary after ordering, but after the food arrived, it was great. The green chili is outstanding. The service as friendly. We stopped back on a Saturday around lunch time, and there was a line out the door.

We've eaten at the Burro a number of times and have always left very full! The food is on par for a consistently satisfying meal and the menu has a pretty good variety of choices - a little something for everyone. Particularly enjoy the Mexican pizza and Mexican burger, but beware of the Spanish spuds - it's literally a ton of cheese... tasty, but whoa!! The staff is super friendly and pretty attentive. Interesting to look at the maps of the US and the globe with pins stuck in by vistors - they're cleared at least once a year and they're always pretty full, so you know you're in good company.

Probably the best place to eat in Fairplay.  I had the Mexican and it was very good.  We had 9 people, and the place was packed.  More pricey than it used to be.

After visiting the South Park Museum we asked a lady there where the best place to eat was and without hesitation she said this place. It was awesome. The first good sign was it was crowded. We had to wait a few minutes for a table but turned out to be worth it.

I tried the Quasedilla and it was very good. My husband tried the Mexican breakfast and he thoroughly enjoyed it. Definitely worth the stop.

    The service was very good.

This is the kind of place that should be on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. BTW, save room for ice cream served next door.

I stopped in with my friends to catch a little lunch on our way camping.  Great little place!  My buddy and I both ordered chicken burritos smothered in green chili. Excellent!  Nice portion, and tasted great!

My friend Cindi had breakfast and she thought it was awesome. Pancakes were great.

These are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Couple that with great food, and it's a must when cruising down 285.

My husband and I were staying at a relative's house just outside of Fairplay on our honeymoon, and so we ate at the Brown Burro several times. The food was excellent, with some variety for vegetarians. The service was strange-- the first time we went there someone else who'd arrived after we did had finished his food before ours even arrived-- but extremely friendly. The owners seemed like sweet people who were very honest with all the customers, and it was a nice mix of regulars and out of towners. Compared to the few other choices, this is the best option for lunch out in Fairplay.

We all need a hideaway breafast indulgence now and then, eh?

This place is a gem - situated on main street in fairplay, it's a great little (very) rustic cabin with the best breakfasts in Summit County.  Think large breakfast burritos with outstanding green chili, and the kind of unending cup of joe that just sits right on a cold mountain morning.

The decor is dive rustic with tons of charm and down home kind of cozy feel. The staff are friendly and easy going, and the kitchen just has the breakfast and lunch thing down pat.

The calorie count should cover you for a day; but if you've used your mountain time wisely (hike, bike...) then you deserve not to be chowing on a friggin salad when you could be gorging on the best damn chicken fried steak in the West...

    enjoy.
