This restaurant is one we visit each time we are in Lake Placid, and each time it seems to get better than the last. It had been two or more years since our last visit and this time it was for our anniversary. They had just open up in a new location so we were anxious to see it. We arrived early to have a glass of wine before dinner, which we were to be seated by the window during sunset. Little did we know they reserved us the best seat in the house. The wine bartender was extremely knowledgeable about our previous choices and current selections and even surprised us with some house favorites. The food was outstanding without a doubt! The food, service, atmosphere and excellent wine absolutely made our Anniversary night memorable. We will visit again and again ... and we are already planning our next trip to The Brown Dog. If there is one place to visit while in Lake Placid, this is it; you won't be disappointed.
Review Source:Expensive tourist trap trying to ne more than they are. Â Trying hard to catch that nyc vibe right down to playing frank over the speakers.
Had lunch there, chacutarie plate was average at best, some supermarket quality stuff here for $20, save yur $.
Ceasar salad was a joke at $9 for semi browned romaine amd i paid $6 to add shrimp that added 3 yes friggin 3 small 30-50 per pound shrimp, cooked to hell on a skewer.....
Wife's sandwich iwas good, thankfully which is why i didnt really bitch about anything......one glass of wine a.piece at it was an $85 mess......worth $45 at most......
Skip this place until they have a reality check......applebees quality sysco crap.....
Two stars because the wine was good and sandwich was good
I wanted to like this place more than I did. Â Maybe I didn't order the right things. Â The service and ambiance were nice. Â We had an extra small bite from the chef that was thrown in. Â However, the food left both my hubby and I saying, meh. Â The salad and soup we had were good. Â I ordered the scallops while my hubby had the the venison. Â The scallops wrapped in proscuitto sounded delicious on the menu, but the food itself wasn't flavored in a way where the food spoke for itself. The scallops were so overwhelmed by other flavors like pepper that you couldn't really taste them. Â Same for the proscuitto. The best part of both our meals was the bed of mashed potatoes that my 3 scallops came on. Â It was covered with a sauce made of artichokes and something else I'm blanking on right now. Â As for my hubby's venison, eh. Â The venison just tasted off; I don't know if it was the cherry demi-glace or what. Â The fries that came with were ok. Â For upwards of $80, I didn't feel like the meal wowed me. Â We probably wouldn't come here again despite wanting to really like the place.
Review Source:Great food, beautiful views over the lake (even if you aren't right by the windows), and hospitable service. Â This was one of our dinners while we spent part of our anniversary at Lake Placid. Â We brought along a bottle of wine (since I was opening a whole series from my cellar for our anniversary). They were very gracious about corkage, we shared some of it with the owner and our waiter since it wasn't on their list and an old bottle that would be difficult to source. The owner came back with a complimentary tasting of dessert wines which we didn't expect but were thrilled with.
Definitely a place we'd go back to if we were in Lake Placid again. Was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food and the really good wine list, didn't expect anything like that in Lake Placid.
Excellent! Â Impeccable service, carefully and masterfully prepared food, and fair prices. Â We ordered prime NY strip, mussels marinere, Maine diver sea scallops wrapped in prosciutto, and pistachio crusted halibut. Â All were really delicious, except for the mussels. Â We didn't care for flavor but the mussels themselves were plump and big. Â The server, Scott, was very good about accommodating food allergies. Â For dessert we enjoyed the flourless chocolate cake. Â We would definitely return here.
Review Source:We had lunch here, sat on the back porch and enjoyed the food and the view. Â Our waiter was friendly and suggested we make our own sandwiches. Much to our delight the sandwiches were delicious and sides were excellent. Â I recommend the corned beef with cheddar and horseradish mayo (a recommendation from our waiter) and the potato salad. My wife had turkey with cheese and cranberry sauce and loved it with the cranberry infused cole slaw.
Review Source:This has to be the best place for dinner. Â The service is phenomenal and the food is all made to order. Â My wife had the chicken which I know sounds safe but was something special. Â I had the prawns with lobster risotto which was spot on. Â The wine recommendations were great. Â I would suggest calling for reservations since it is small and books up fast.
Review Source:Really good food. We went there for lunch. I got a wild mushroom and lavender soup and my husband got the lobster bisque. The mushroom soup was fabulous. I have collected my own wild mushrooms before and the kitchen did an excellent job of catching the flavor. Also, the lavender was such a great touch, you could really taste the herb infused into the broth. It was one of the best soups I have ever had. The bisque was great as well but there were little pieces of shell that needed to be picked out. Â We also ordered a chicken goat cheese salad. The creamy cheese, pecan clusters, and cranberries were great. However, ther could have been more flavor in the chicken. But the flavor of the rest of the salad made up for it. I would definately recommend this place.
Review Source:It was a snowy, wintery day...
(I have a feeling all stories in Lake Placid might start out this way)
A couple days before Christmas, my friend and I made our way down the main strip of Lake Placid in search of a decent place to get lunch. My friend is hard to please. I'm possibly harder to please, so no steakhouses and no greasy spoons, preferably something with a view, because I don't get to Lake Placid often (or, ever), so I want my damn view of mountains, a lake, a ski slope or something.
We came upon Brown Dog Deli & Wine Bar and thought BINGO ("there was a farmer, had a dog..."oh I did NOT just go there, did I?) We saw the menu is comprised of creative sandwiches and dishes and hello, wine! Plus a quick peek revealed a glorious picture window in the back. In!
Needless to say, you've hit the jackpot if you get a seat by the aforementioned picture window. Even if you don't sit right at the window, any seat towards the back affords a view. Our hostess thoughtfully sat us right next to the bathroom. Sigh. I forgive her because it was busy and at least we *did* have that amazing view (of the snowy lake, that is. We just ignored the bathroom).
One thing I noticed in the restaurant was the overpowering scent of lilies. I love the smell normally, but in a wine bar, not so much. The smell was invasive and at times interfered with the food and wine.
The vegetable sandwich I ordered was tasty and acceptable. The bag of Lays chips that came on the side was not. I mean, this isn't Katz's fucking deli or the school cafeteria. It just totally cheapens the rest of the plate to have that yellow bag on there, a most tacky garnish. Not surprisingly, they have a very thorough wine list and impressive amount of choices by the glass. We indulged. What did you expect?
Overall, I do recommend Brown Dog, especially for a glass of wine and a serene spot to enjoy the view.
A few of us hockey dads went there last weekend when the Cottage at Mirror Lake had too long of a wait. Â Great find. Â This place had a cool view, great relaxed atmosphere, a waitress with an attitude (in a good and fun way) and no wait to get seated...perfect start. Â The lunch choices were excellent. Â I had a nice grilled chicken on sour dough. Â Wish I had a chance to go back and have dinner...looked like a nice wine list.
Review Source:The Brown Dog is a small, Lake Placid restaurant that plates interesting offerings that are a combination of fine dining and comfort food with a great wine list by the glass to match each dish. The food was good.
The only problem came with the service. It is slow, which isn't necessarily bad, it gives you time to relax, sip your wine and see who is sharing the place with you plus you can listen to what is going on....like hearing your waitress yell your dessert (that she pushed as an incredibly delicious special) order into the kitchen "Do we have any of the apple tarts you made yesterday left?" Thankfully, they had run out. We passed on the remaining choices.
Brown Dog Deli & Wine Bar isn't just one of the best places to dine in Lake Placid - in my opinion, it's one of the best spots (in its price point) to grab a meal in the whole Adirondack region. Â The food may not be on par with what you'd expect from a similar place in a big city, but you won't get these views in any big city I know of. Â I took a girlfriend who was visiting from Australia to Brown Dog for lunch last week and couldn't have chosen a better spot to introduce her to the region.
We arrived around 1:30 for lunch and every seat in the house was taken - a great sign! Â Luckily the first table to open up was on the quaint patio in the back of the restaurant. Â Brown Dog's main dining area is really quite lovely, with warm colors and wooden floors and a sandwich bar and a wine bar. Â But the back porch is the spot where you want to be, especially if the weather is as nice as it was when I was there. Â We had a gorgeous view of Mirror Lake and I love how they decorated the porch with chandeliers and burlap sacks puffed along the ceilings. Â Soothing jazz was piped outside. Â Perfect.
Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the extensive wine list, which includes many options available in both 3 and 6 ounce pours. Â I really liked the food menu, too. Â Lots of local ingredients. Â The front page listed a number of appealing-sounding gourmet sandwiches costing around $15, and the middle page has the more reasonable $8ish options. Â We were on vacation so we figured why not go for broke. Â I ordered the lobster club sandwich: big hunks of lobster, strips of bacon, avocado, and lemon olive oil aioli on a brioche bun ($17.95). Â My girlfriend had an open-faced bison rib eye sandwich with caramelized Vidalia onions and tomato-laced bernaise. Â The sandwiches were both excellent, but I was a tad disappointed by a few details. Â The arugula that came with the sandwiches was sad and wilted, and my girlfriend's bison steak had a lot of fat running throughout. Â Plus, the fresh-cut rosemary fries had tons of potential but they were cold by the time they reached our table.
All-in-all I'd recommend Brown Dog without hesitation to anyone visiting Lake Placid. Hold out for a seat on the back patio!
This is the best restaurant for dinner in the Lake placid area by a country mile. I had dinner here with my mom and dad, and it was some of the best food I have ever put in my mouth. However, if you want to eat good here, prepare to visit the ATM.
My dad and I had the veal chop. It's off the tasting menu, but you can order anything from that section. Funny thing about that tasting menu, there are no prices listed. After looking at the bill, I knew why. Those chops were VERY expensive for VERY expensive. But they were absolutely delicious, so I don't complain. However, I would much more highly recommend the swordfish with white truffle polenta, which my mom had. It's less expensive and (I think) better.
Beyond that, the service was very good. Our waitress (Chelsea?) had impeccable timing, and did very little to interrupt the dining experience.
The restaurant itself was very calm and quiet. No hustle and bustle with only 3 waitstaff and 9-12 tables. The restaurant had a very nice ambiance, which was never broken and it made the meal very pleasant.
This July 4th we went camping on Lake Harris (we are from NYC) and visited Lake Placid for the day.
I was with 2 other girlfriends and 2 small dogs. Â We were able to sit outside and have drinks but the kitchen was closed (we came in between lunch and dinner set).
Our waitress was new and did not know how to handle our table. Â We are all 30-31. Â We ordered our drinks but
one person in our party did not have her wallet. Â The waitress said she would check if she can still bring up her drink order. Â After a few minutes, the waitress came back asking us a 2nd time about our drink order; she said she "...forgot what it was." Â She completely ignored our friend who didn't have an ID. Â We had to ask the waitress if she could still get a drink to which we received, "Oh, uhm, no. Â Can I get you a lemonade or ice tea?" Â We found it extremely rude that she came over and ignored our sans-wallet friend. Â When we finally got our drinks, she brought over a Melini red wine instead of the bellini that I orderd (twice now). Â While waiting for my correct drink, we were all sharing tastes of the wine at our table. Â The manager came outside and TOOK THE GLASS OUT of my friend's hand. Â She rudely said, "Since you don't have ID you cannot drink this." Â We were flabbergasted. Â I do believe there were more polite ways to handle this situation.
The waitress brought us the check before we asked and kept the incorrect drink on the tab. Â
I am highly disappointed at the service and will never return back.
PHENOMENAL! I highly suggest the "tasting" menu on Saturday nights - 5 courses total including a main meal. Â You can get this with and without wine pairings. Â
This is a very intimate setting - they only have about 9-12 tables (though I'm sure they can accommodate a larger group too).
Service was excellent and you can tell they put a lot of thought into everything they do here.
