We came here after realizing that every other place in town shut down promptly at (or before?!) 9pm and we hadn't eaten. We had low expectations - greasy bar food, but better than going to bed hungry - but we were pleasantly surprised! I had the crab cake (actually on the appetizer menu) which was 100% crab meat lightly fried with some tasty chipotle mayo. Hubby had a bleu cheese burger which was juicy and tasty. We got pecan pie a la mode as a dessert, and it was tasty as well. This place is NOT just a bar, and definitely not a last resort. Give 'em a try!

Just okay. Bleu Cheese Burger was loaded with Bleu Cheese, but overcooked. Ordered medium-well, but it came out very well-done. Service was mediocre, and atmosphere is just okay. On a bright note, the "Indian Rain Sticks" (fried zucchini and squash) were quite tasty. Still, not a place we'll visit again.

TERRIBLE - I, also, would give it less than a star if possible. This is a little long, but it happened. We've been here a few times, usually when we are riding on our motorcycles. The food is just o.k. The staff is typically VERY slow. This last trip (and I DO mean last)  the service was UNBELIEVABLY bad. We had walked in around 3pm after what was obviously the end of a rush and there were probably about 15 guests. A third of the tables (I am not exaggerating) were still covered in leftover food, dirty dishes, etc.

After waiting 10 minutes to be acknowledged, an annoyed server ushered us over to a dirty table to sit. He disappeared and we were not greeted by our waitress for another 10 minutes. She disappears again. Getting annoyed and just wanting something to eat and drink after shopping, we moved over to the bar area to get better service. A different server comes over and we immediately give them our drink AND food order. We get our daughter's drink. They disappear and come back 10 minutes later with just food.

At this point, we went up to the bar to get our drinks after watching the server disappear again. Mind you, we weren't asked to pay for the beer at this point - we are obviously at a table. After about 5 minutes, the guy behind the bar (presumably the owners son) personally walks over to our table and plunks down two more beers, which we do not drink. He was aware that we had already gotten our drinks (he poured them and it wasn't that busy) and he brought them over to make a point This later ends in a LOUD and very annoying argument to have the beers taken off of our check. It was ridiculous. I can't remember being anywhere where we had to argue to get something so stupid fixed - AND he wouldn't let us leave with the beers (which IS legal to do on the streets of Fredericksburg - LOVE it!) He obviously was having a bad day and was determined to make sure others did too.

Finally, after fixing our bill, he returns and LITERALLY tosses the receipt book on the table, hitting my husbands drink. The bartender should feel thankful that my husband is a good guy :) We will NEVER return again and we tell every person (especially our biker friends) to avoid this place with their lazy rude staff (We get it - you hate the tourist - but they are helping to pay your rent - try to remember that!)

Came on 1/3/12 for drinks before dinner. It was around 5:00 and the place was empty on a Thursday night. We sat at the bar and ordered a couple of beers. They are reasonably priced. Didn't try any food but if you want to stop in and take a break from walking or shopping its a good place to do it.

On one of Fredericksburg's busiest nights (Christmas Parade/First Friday Art Walk) we were quickly seated. The service was a little confusing, but I chalk that up to the unexpected busy night. We all ordered apps (Corned bison sliders=YUM, Jalapeno Poppers=Hot YUM and Pulled Pork Sandwich with delicious fries.)
The over all impression was ok, but knowing that there are so many other places that are WOW, I don't see myself going again unless in another pinch.

Just had dinner for four and enjoyed very much.  Long Island ice tea was excellent.  Two had the chicken fried steak and was first rate. Others had burgers and rated excellent. Service was good and would come back

The folks and I were in Fredericksburg to visit the Pacific War Museum and decided to stop in this place for a late lunch.  It was about 2:30 on a Thursday afternoon (granted it was Christmas week) and the place was pretty full.  We were seated right away and the hostess took our drink order and then promptly disappeared for about 20 minutes until we asked someone else if we could place our order and maybe have our drinks.

Eventually drinks arrived and we placed our order.  The food came out relatively quickly and was pretty good.  We each had a burger and fries and the beer-b-que sauce was excellent.

Then, in a repeat of the drinks incident, we didn't see our server again even though we finished our meal and sat there for at least 15 minutes before we successfully tackled her and wrested our check from captivity. Add to that nobody ever came by to refresh our drinks or see how we were doing .  I saw a total of 4 employees in the whole place, way too few for the business they were doing.

To sum up, food 4 stars, service -2 stars, result  2 star review.

We were lured in by the delicious smell from the street. Upon entering, I was instructed by the very young hostess to step outside and finish the beer in my hand because "open containers" aren't allowed. I attempted to kill the inch of beer in the waiting area and was scolded. Fine, fine...came back in and was seated at the smallest booth ever made. Our robotic and as we would find out soon, forgetful, server gave us an unenthusiastic greeting, could not offer info on the various local booze selections.
ME: "What type of liquor is this?"
    HER: "Um, I don't know."

....then I had to prompt her to go inquire with the barkeep on my behalf which took a very long time in a not even close to busy restaurant. When our food came out, it was good. I had a burger and BF had a salad (which he had to ask for because it was forgotten)and chicken fried steak. All delicious and fresh.  We lingered for awhile and I felt like our server was trying to rush us out the door.

A little training for the young and inexperienced staff could remedy the issues with this place. Not sure I'll be back though. There are lots of other places to eat in the area.

We stumbled upon the place last Friday night and went in for a beer. The menu was tempting so we decided to try their burgers, and glad we did! My Nickel burger was cook to perfection and the fries season wonderfully. Finished with deep dish pecan pie and ice cream and could barely waddle out of the place I was so full....and happy! Will certainly be back next time I'm in Fredericksburg.

Came in for a beer a few weeks ago with my wife and some friends. The bartender (a young women) made us feel as if we were a bother to her.  She was very ununfriendly and rude. When she finally came back to check on us my friend orderd two beers. While she was there I figured I better order while I can so I said " two more beers here also". Without looking in my directuon she raised her index finger and held it in my direcrion and stated " one thing at a time". I was floored. I called to speak to a  manager a couple of days later and spoke with James. He sounded young and didnt express any real concern.  I would not reccomend this place if good service is important to you.

Had lunch on a Tuesday. We ordered the chicken fried steak lunch special.  I did not want fries, so I asked  If I could substitute..yes for a charge. That's okay,
I get it ...they  have a lunch special for a reason. I was charged 3.00 extra to have green beans and mashed potatoes. A bit pricey for lunch. However; the green beans and mashers were great. The breading on the chicken fried steaks..delicious. We ordered peach pie for dessert (after all -this is Fredericksburg in July)  Nice presentation and very tasty. Not a traditional pie.  The crust, more of a biscuit was thick, slightly underdone in the middle, but overall excellent.

Our server,Tanya, from Russia, was friendly and attentive.
    Will definitely return

"The bison sliders were a wonderful treat! Fresh bread, delicious!! Crab salad with lemon vinegarette was a large portion with a corn/egg/crab mixture- light and fresh!"

Utilize some common sense and it will all be fine.

After taking a tip about BN from my nine-year-old nephew, who is blessed with impeccable taste in cuisine, women, and dinosaur action figures, I and a small group of tired adventurers headed in for dinner.

Think: A rustic Black-Eyed Pea with a bit of an edge. First glance at the menu tells you the Nickle is trying a little too hard. Standard Texas chicken-fried comfort food and upscale burgers with a few avant-garde unmentionables in every menu category. I'm always confused with any eatery's decision to include some sort of braised this or that in a foamy reduction without a regional connection or sequitur taken from other menu items. (I am even more confused with reviewers who decide to pioneer such offerings, then sternly complain after. What did you expect?)

Feeling more than a bit filmy from the day's activities and having left our dressier t-shirts in our travel bags, our collective decided to stay in the fairway choosing chicken fried chicken, buffalo wings, burgers, etc. Salads were cold and crispy. Side dished veggies (corn, pintos, green beans) tasted farm fresh, were all lightly seasoned, and cooked till semi-firm. The green beans were a big hit amongst us all.

Our burgers and chicken-frieds also received  the same love and care in the kitchen. The home made desserts all sounded inviting, but with the portions afforded our meals, noone could muster any attempt. The wait staff is young and inexperienced, however we were fortunate and the place was slower than a North Korean synagogue during our visit (it was an off night). Again, exercise a little sense and patience at the Nickle and all will be fine.

If there was a way to give less than one star I would. We went with a group of 8 for a Bday dinner and the original waitress(firey redhead) I guess decided she didn't want to handle our group & just didn't come back. When the young man that was pushed on our table came to take our order he was very nice and knowledgeable, however the food was all over cooked and no manager ever came by to explain why we were left w/o drinks for 14mins nor did they care how our food was. We didn't complain to anyone bcuz it didn't seem like they would care. Definately NEVER going back.

Portabello mushroom soup was cold and salty. Worse, the waitress argued with me -- "there's no salt in it!" Chili was adequate, nothing more. Fries were soggy. Burger was pretty good, but for the price and with all the other things, it just wasn't worth it. Not coming back.

If you're looking for a relaxing place to have lunch, dinner or even just enjoy a drink, I highly recommend the Buffalo Nickel.  I originally stopped in late one afternoon for a drink.  The service was friendly and fast.  They have a full bar including a nice selection of scotch.  I was offered the food menu but had eaten not too long before and was not yet hungry.

However, the menu looked so though that I decided to bring my group back the next day for lunch.  Just as before, we were greeted and then seated quickly.  It was fairly busy that lunch time but our service was fast and the atmosphere still very conducive to conversation.  I had the buffalo Reuben sliders and they were delicious.  I also ordered an extra side of the sweet potato hash just to try and it was also delicious. Someone in my group ordered of their bread pudding for dessert and I had a bite.  It was very good.  I'd definitely recommend that as a dessert option.

If I'm ever back in Fredericksburg, I'll definitely stop back in!

Tried the Buffalo Nickel Friday night...had the Nickle Burger. This is 8oz of angus cooked the way you want it, I like mine medium rare. Topped with the usual fixins, adequately fresh plus a fairly good size onion ring...It was good...my only wish is that they'd make their own mayonaise instead of something in a plastic foodservice grade tube, like you get at concession stands...Ok thats not my only wish. This food establishment could easily jump up in the ranks of exceptional food if they'd personalize their dishes with local fresher produce, twice cook the hand cut fries which were good but too soggy. they have a fairly good selection of beer and a full bar...And I'd rather the huge intrusive sports bar tv be turned off in the dining area.  The deep dish pecan pie ala mode was very good. but we had to come back another night just for that.  Over all we liked the experience and when we want a good burger it's a good chance it'll be here.

I rather liked this place. The signs for meat with no antibiotics was great...now if they just offered whole wheat buns it would be perfect. We got the fried catfish with the sweet potato hash and the blue cheese burger with onion rings. The catfish was not the best i have had. The breading was bread batter style and I prefer the corn batter style. I also prefer tartar sauce with mine over their sundried tomato stuff. A little weird on catfish IMO. If you REALLY want to try something FABULOUS though go for the burgers. The burger was really really delicious. If blue cheese is not your thing they have plenty of other yummy concoctions. Try one- you will like it. I also wholeheartedly recommend the homemade strawberry shortcake. IT IS THE BOMB! Made with homemade buttermilk biscuits OMG. Sinful yet soooooooo worth it!

Ok, y'all. This place has THE BEST CFS on the bleeping planet. I have spent years and years on this particular quest, so I should know. I've had it all over Texas, tried different country's versions such as milanesa in Argentina and schnitzel in Austria, and no one has come close to the masterpiece I found at this little sports bar in Fredricksburg.

Now to judge CFS properly, you have to consider 3 elements. First, the steak, then the crust, and finally the cream gravy. Often times, the steak is tough or stringy, but at the Buffalo, it was as tender as a veal steak. Next up, consider the crust: again, top notch, perfectly seasoned, light and crispy and not too thick but not too thin. And to round out the taste explosion in your mouth, the delicately flavored cream gravy of perfect consistency. I'm telling you, if you're a CFS lover, hop in your car right now and bust a move to Fredricksburg. You will not be disappointed.

Aside from the near orgasmic CFS experience, the service was outstanding and my friend's buffalo chili cheese fries were worth writing home about as well. And did I mention the the CFS is Texas sized? I got my gravy on the side, took most of it home and reheated in in my toaster oven for two more meals. I swear, it actually got better!

I'm going back for another dive into CFS Nirvana tomorrow. Maybe I'll see you there!

In short, very good food (for a bar&grill), excellent service, and nice casual atmosphere.

Have to admit. We didn't plan on dining here. But since it seems nearly every restaurant in Fredricksburg closes by 9PM, if you're hungry at 9:10, this place is one of your few options. And so we found ourselves at this very casual bar&grill. After 9PM, there is a limited menu. Surprisingly, on the menu was seared tuna and filet mignon! I decided to risk it with the  tuna. I have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised. Very tasty. And my friend's chicken sandwich was huge and very flavorful. The tuna wasn't cheap, but it wasn't ridiculous. $17. I guess if you expect a decent tuna steak, don't expect to pay bargain prices.

I was also very impressed by the staff. They were extremely quick. nice folks, too.

Overall, I really liked this place. If you want a nice upscale place to have dinner, this probably isn't what you're looking for. But if you just want to be regular, down-to-earth folks for a night, this is definitely a good place to go. And don't worry about getting there by 9PM.

The folks here are great.  My bud got the big salad for only $5.  I got the buffalo meat nachos.  Very good.  The had bufflalo slider and I have regrets not getting those.  Hindsight 20/20.

The Service was top notch.  Examples.  Served my friend a pint of mimosa (nursing hangovers) with fresh OJ but champagne is separate glass to mix at his discretion.  I asked for extra ice cream on my brownie sundae and they were happy to.  We were at the bar watching football, got another round and asked when they closed.  It had been about 45 ago.  They let us stay as long as we wanted.

Not exciting. A cold December day the week before Christmas we stopped in here. I had a burger with green chile on it that was nothing exciting. I had to wait for a hot tea refill for quite a while. We weren't impressed and won't go back. This is a place to drink beer, not a place to look for food.

A few feet off the main drag, this fairly dark sports bar rates a solid "okay" in my book.  For every mis-step (serving the awful local water, dry buffalo wings), there is a saving throw (delicious green chile cheese sauce, tasty and overloaded burgers and sandwiches, friendly service).

Pretty limited menu (sandwiches, wings, steaks) overall.  If you are rolling up the perfect tourist experience, you might do better at the bakeries or one of the traditional German places.  If you are looking for a sports bar, you have found it.
