This night out started with a 45 minute wait for 2 burgers and a grilled chicken sandwich. DO NOT ORDER THE 1/3 # ??? Burger. It is paper thin and cooked so long it crumbled when I tried to pick it up to put ketchup on the bun. Worse burger I have EVER had. The grilled chicken was sooooo dry it was hard to eat any of it. The server avoided our table and only dropped our bill off after serving us the slop they called food. Not wanting to make a scene I wrote a note on the back of the charge slip with my name and phone number hoping the manager or owner would call me to talk about our experience. At 11:00 a.m. the next morning I called the owner to explain our evening at her restaurant. She said she would look at the note and see who our server was. At no point was any effort made to correct the issues with our meal. My name is Jim Tipton and anyone thinking of eating feel free to call me @ 605-521-4049.

I liked this place. Nice atmosphere, lots of fried options on the menu, and they put hats on the dead creatures mounted on the wall! I had some fried steak tips, I expected them to be breaded, they weren't buy still had a crisp exterior and a warm, soft meaty center. The fried pickle spears were nicely breaded though.
There was a TV at te booth with a remote, so it was easy to catch the end of the movie we had started at the place with a TV in the booth earlier in the day!

Walked in for a burger and beer.  The woman behind the bar said she had been there for years.  She was such a warm and attentive lady.  Had the bison burger and my husband had the largest burger they make.  The burgers where really good but not the best I've ever had.  For the price and the area the food was great, hot, and served quickly.  I suppose it was because no one was really there... Overall a neat place to eat....

We were prety disappointed in the food at Bumpin Buffalo.  It's not so much a nice restaurant, as a glorified bar--expect mediocre bar food, and you'll be fine.

There on vacation. Hill City is centrally located and the Bumpin Buffalo is right on the main drag..
Great service, very cool ambiance  Had the bison burger and others had the bison bratwurst and a BLT. Food was above averag to very goode. The staff and the bartender (owner?) were great. They obviously care about what they do. Has an upstairs deck as well

This was our first place we ate after getting marrried the night before in Sioux Falls, getting 3 hrs of sleep and traveling 6 1/2 to Hill City...with all this being said the place was just average. I had chicken fried steak, kinda salty but still ok. Corn was cold but the mash potatoes were hot and good. Had a good beer and friendly service, but place did seem unorganized. If you are looking for a place that is easy and simple, then this is your place....they do have personal tvs at the booths.

I would not recommend this place at all.  We only went here because the Alpine Inn down the block had a long wait.  Bad choice.  The Bumpin' Buffalo had horrible low quality food.  The waitress was rude; when asked for a recommendation she flatly said she was a vegetarian and offered no suggestions.  The food we ordered was undercooked and we didn't eat more than a few bites.  She never came by to ask how the food was until she dropped off the bill, and even that sat on the table for 20 minutes.  We should've stuck it out and waited for the Alpine Inn.

This has to be the worst place that I've eaten in in years! We went here because a friend that we are traveling with had eaten lunch here a few years ago and loved it. Well, we walked in the door and the host said that there was a wait downstairs and we could eat on the patio upstairs. We went up there and sat down. eventually a server came by and dropped off a few menus and took our order. To make a long story short. we were served on styrofoam with plastic knives and forks; the special, ordered rare came well done and couldn't be replaced because there was "no more" left. A hamburger ordered with swiss and mushrooms to replace it came with neither and when we told the server, she came back in a few minutes with a cold slice of American cheese and sliced jalapenos!

We were told by the manager when we complained, that the patio had a totally different menu and kitchen than the downstairs.

Needless to say, we won't return!!

Eh. one of the few places open for food between 3 and 5.

We ate on rooftop patio, definitely not as nice as inside. The waitress was friendly enough, However all of our items were wrong. We had asked for a few changes from the menu, type of cheese, hold the onions, etc. None of them happened.

    Food wasn't good or bad.

You can hear the nearby train while you eat

I ate here when the restaurant first opened a few years ago, and will not waste my time going back.

The place used to be a grand old dive of epic proportions, with old men in overalls sitting at a bar drinking beer, an interesting place that dated back to when Hill City first was a town in the 1870's.  The bar was full of relics and antiques (including its patrons) and was owned by the city since its inception.  Then around 2004, it disappeared, and so did the old tables and booths, old painting, old flooring, and everything else that made it a unique old dump full of history.

The food is average (deep fried pub-grub, and not exceptional nor unique) and the atmosphere just isn't there.  There's so much more to offer, dining-wise, in Hill City, ESPECIALLY if history is interesting to you and you like quaint over trendy.

The Alpine Inn, for example, has kept all its history and is legendary for their lunch and dinners.  The J-9 Cafe (I think that's still its name) is on Main Street where it's been for decades serving homemade, greasy, but wonderful food and daily specials.  I'd recommend those places first.

We went here for dinner on a cross country road trip... They do nice appetizers and the burgers were pretty good.  The buffalo burger was a little over done though...

As a bar I'd give it 5 stars but not as a restaurant.  Food was mediocre.  Buffalo burger was the best of the lot.  Marinated steak bites are nice as an app, but as a meal, they get old fast.   Nice craft brewed house label beer.   Nice atmosphere   Oddly, each booth has a TV so if you don't like to talk or you want to watch a game, thats a plus.

Service was odd.  They were dead, but one of the servers was somehow in the weeds so another lady took over our table.   She was pleasant if a bit inattentive.   Again, only 3 or 4 tables full at this time and there were 3 servers so odd.

Not a lot of dining options in town, but I'd go down the street to the diner.

In a city littered with "closed for the season" signs in early-October, the open sign on their door was a very welcoming sign.  I'm not sure why they essentially close everything down from October-May, given that there is absolutely nothing to do in this area.

The food here is amazingly good.  Their buffalo wings just might be the best ones we've ever had.  We've scoured many places around the country for the best buffalo wings, and I would put these in my top 3.  The buffalo burger was awesome and the corn nuggets really good.

Don't come here expecting healthy food.  You're in South Dakota for crying out loud, where it's snowing in early October.  You need some fat on your bones or you'll die from this ridiculously cold weather.

Will we be back?  Definitely not.  But not because the food wasn't good.  We just hope to never, ever find ourselves in South Dakota again.  Ever.

Right in downtown Hill City, this is a nice little bar with a good selection of beers on tap but with a very small menu, on which everything is fried. Don't get me wrong, I ate my fried food, but there really were no healthy options. Probably a better place to go drink at than eat.
