I think most of the critics are overly harsh. On the other hand, the fans of this place are perhaps a bit too generous. This is essentially a hotel restaurant, stuck in a 70s time warp, even though it is only tenuosly associated with the adjoining hotel.

The decor is pretty atrocious. It's dominated by mismatched wood, with dark paint and carpeting. The space does not flow and has too many levels. The art on the walls has no theme. The piped in music is apparently a local oldies station and pop hits from the 60s and 70s simply do not contribute to the steakhouse ambiance.

I tried the well-reviewed prime rib dinner. The meat was tender and flavorful. But to get it to my desired doneness, it had obviously been scorched on the flattop. The garlic mashed potatoes were well-prepared and flavorful. The au jus and creamy horseradish added to the flavor in a way that the side of vegetables (few slices of barely steamed carrots and zuchini) did not. She had the cod dungeness, which was interesting and flavorful. Her baked potato was servicable. But the same unremarkable veggies got little attention.

We split the triple-berry cobbler a la mode and were well pleased with our choice.

All-in-all: meh. We won't go out of our why to eat here when we are back in town.

    Gross.  Expensive.  All-around BAD.

I'm not expecting Seattle quality food when I'm out on the peninsula, however, charging $25+ for entrees better come with something worth my while (and dollars).

This place is an epic failure.  The $5 salad bar is a joke and the quality of food is worth about $10 less per plate than they charge.

I wouldn't be so annoyed if it was priced fairly... i.e. $15 for baked shrimp I would assume they probably suck...but $23?! Youch!

The mashed potatoes were nasty and like some sort of garlic putty and I can't even talk about the fish-n-chips my boyfriend had.  For being that close to fresh seafood the cod was pathetic!  We could have gone and gotten a McFish or whatever they're called from McDonald's!

Do yourself a favor and go to Michael's downtown PA...

I try really hard not to give out 5-star ratings so that I can save them for the truly extraordinary.

    Bushwhacker earned it.

My family stopped here for dinner after a visit to Hurricane Ridge up in Olympic National Park.  The hostess and waitresses wearing nice dresses and jewelry and the linen napkins on the tables made my wife and I felt a little under-dressed in our sweaty grungy hiking t-shirts and cargo shorts.  However, pretty much all the other customers were in casual attire, so we didn't feel too out of place.

The food was extraordinarily good.  I had the fresh halibut from Neah Bay.  My son who never eats anything besides pizza, cheeseburgers, and chicken nuggets tried a bite and HE even liked it.  Based on the other Yelp reviews, I had to try some clam chowder, and I agree with the other reviews - it was pretty good.  My wife had the prime rib and shrimp which were also delicious.

They serve coke in a bottle, and also a local bottle root beer that was pretty tasty, too.

The desserts were pretty wicked.  I wanted one of each, but we settled on sharing one.

They have a kids menu / coloring sheet and were very accommodating of kids' preferences.

Service was top-notch - prompt, professional, and friendly.

The only down side was it was a bit pricey, but we definitely got our money's worth in terms of quality of food and service.  My son asked if we could find something else to do in Port Angeles so that we could go back to Bushwhacker to eat again.

I guarantee we'll be back here anytime we head out to tour the Olympic peninsula.

Best fish and chips I've had since I worked in England!  Fast courteous servious and the food was hot and at reasonable prices. Definitely recommended. (BTW: we were there for lunch)

My girlfriend and I had dinner here after a long day of hiking at Hurricane Ridge. We loved the decor, including the stained glass oculus. We wondered if the building was a former church.

The food was excellent, a tad on the pricy side but the quality more than meets it. We each had steak, and she had mozzarella sticks before (I can't). Their wine selection was good too; their reisling was crisp and fruity. We walked away full and delighted.

One additional kudo for the place: while we were eating, a kid in a motorized wheelchair came in with their parent/guardian/caretaker. The staff went out of their way to make them comfortable, proactively moving chairs in advance of the kid and laughing with them. They seemed to truly make them welcome, which isn't always the case in restaurants, so kudos to them for doing so.

The restaurant is right in back of the Day's Inn, with a stairway between it and the restaurant. If you're staying in from out of town, I recommend this double treat.

In my experience Fish & Chips that use breading instead of batter run the risk of undercooking the fish or burning the breading. Both happened tonight. The "tartar sauce" seemed to be nothing more than mayo. On the other hand my wife enjoyed her pasta with shrimp and Alfredo sauce.

Good food with a nice variety of dishes. Decent salad bar with great soup. The clam chowder is great.

Good stuff overall, I loved the teriyaki chicken, but it needed more sauce. I asked and the server brought me plenty. The entire family enjoyed their dinner. Service was good.

If you know what you like here, and you like salad bars, you'll be pleasantly surprised. I'm somewhere between 3 and 4 stars for this place, but my math inclines me to turn the 3.5 into a 4.

    Pros?
-Delicious salad bar (they even have soups in the salad bar, which is unusual for fancier restaurants!)
    -Good menu item variety
-The food is above average. Not amazing, but definitely above average
-Service is fast, with a smile, and they actually care
    -Pleasant, romantic atmosphere
-Fun lights and an outdoor-esque dining terrace past the bar

    Cons?
-Sometimes there are too few servers that get sat too many tables at once. This means slower service
    -A bit pricey
-The fish and chips (they have an all you can eat day) uses panko crumbs instead of beer-batter which can overpower the fish

For me, Bushwhacker's fits in to a category with a lot of kind of...normal...American dining places. The menus are the same. You want some beef, yeah, we have it. You want some seafood? We've got some of that too (although, in this case, it's hopefully a bit better, given the location). Now, I don't know if that's a fair appraisal here, since I've only visited once, but...it has that feel. There's places like this all over.

Anyway - to the food. I ordered the fish and chips - which were "all you can eat" this particular Tuesday night. The fries were pretty good, nice and crisp with tender centers, but the fish, while done properly, and with a nice crispy breading, needed a little interest. very little salt...maybe some herbs in the batter, salt the oil, or salt the batter...something. I ate two of the healthy size pieces, and left the third - no need for a refill on that. They did have good coleslaw - creamy tangy dressing with some mustard in it (or at least, mustard seed) and little to no white/red onion.

Service was fine, price was reasonable...I feel like two stars might be a bit over critical. But the fact of the matter is, I can get reliably better fish and chips from Ivar's in the Seattle airport. So...hopefully this was just an off night. Lots of people seem to like the place - we'll see if we go back to give it another shot.

This place was recommended by the guy at the desk at our hotel.  My husband had the seafood platter and I had the penne pasta with prawns.  Everything was very good, and the homemade bread was great.  Good, friendly service and a nice atmosphere.  Liked all the art and the stained glass window.  Good choice for a nice meal.

A co-worker and I stopped in here for dinner. In general the service was average, but helpful and very nice. I had prime rib and taiwan shrimp. The Prime Rib was cooked perfectly, was tender and tasted great. The shrimp was overcooked. The problem with the shrimp was that it is butterflied and if it sits around for a couple of minutes it continues to cook. The chef needs to wait until the server is ready to deliver the food before plating it. The garlic potatoes were good, but not fresh. I'm pretty sure that they cook up a big batch at the beginning of the shift and dole it out for the remainder of the night. My friend had the stuffed cod and was happy with it. The salad bar was pretty good and the clam chowder was above average. I'm being a bit generous with the 4 stars, but I liked the waitress, the wine and the prime rib enough to say that it was a bit better than just "A-OK".

You should know right off the bat that my only time eating here was summer of 2000. Even though it's been 10 years, I still remember my meal and how much I enjoyed it. It was one of the best prime ribs I ever had. Their salad bar was great as was the cornbread. I would definitely go there again if I ever make it back to Port Angeles.

Foods are marvelously delicious. Service is above average.

Try the prime rib, you will not regret it. I have to have one whenever I am in the Olympics.

We were seated promptly and everything went downhill from there. We waited an extreme amount of time for our drink order to be taken. I was not asked how I wanted my burger cooked...It was "assumed" that I wanted it well done...when the replacement came to the table,  the fries were ice cold...we were offered a bread basket while we were waiting for dinner...I'm still waiting on the bread...The waitress essentially told me it was my fault my dinner wasn't the way I wanted it. We will never go back...VERY disappointed.

If you want meat this place is pretty good. Splurged on the filet mignon and it was perfect.  My son's steak sandwich was very good.  Service keeps me from a higher rating. Waitress was rushed, forgot both soup and house salad.  I wanted decaf but she ran off before I could ask, etc.  The homemade peach pie was good.

Nice friendly service, they were out of prime rib so I settled for Taiwan shrimp. The shrimp was cold and so was the garlic mashed potatoes.

This is one of the nicer restaurants in town, if you go you must try the peanut butter cheesecake.

Since this is the closest restaurant to my hotel, I decided to check it out.  While I was planning on getting prime rib for dinner, I got their too late and it was all gone.  However the special of the day was local caught salmon.  It was served over a bed of spinach with crumbled bacon and a orange aolie.  Needless to say, i cleaned my plate.  I also enjoyed their salad bar.  It was very fresh and the soups were excellent as well.  The service was great.  The only negative it that it is a bit pricey.

We went there 8ish on a Sunday evening on the recommendation of the hotel front desk clerk. I was a bit leery as I had been depending solely on yelp for my food choices. Having a myriad of food allergies plus being vegetarian, I was worried my only choices would be fried mozzarella sticks.  The parking lot was deserted and maybe two other parties were in this cavernous restaurant. I ordered a 'half' mediterranean salad and when it arrived it was huge but fabulous!  The lettuce, mostly romaine was fresh, crisp, no ugly rust stains and the salad a complete meal. I would definitely eat there again if I didn;t have to drive 1243 miles.

Went here on a recommendation from a guy I'm in town working with and was generally impressed.  I had the grilled oysters and they were excellent.  The breading was light with no noticeable sogginess often associated with breaded items at lesser restaurants.  The oysters were moist and tasty.  They came on a bed of greens and were plated next to a baked potato and a couple carrots and asparagus spears.  Nothing really notable about the sides.  The person I was with enjoyed the teriyaki chicken and the side of garlic mash potatoes.

Let's just say: Been there done that. Nothing special. A little pricey both food and drinks. Food is so so. There steaks don't come out right, their salad bar and chowder are average though they rave about them.  The place menu is more on the seafood way than the beef and steaks so I was disappointed. The desserts are OK but I think they aren't made there. The lounge is small but comfortable and quiet, but I wouldn't say the place has a nightlife.

Oops I forgot they do bring a band in or comedian in from time to time and clear the dining area. So they have started having a little nightlife at a cost which is nuts for a community this small!

My husband and I were in town for the Seafood festival and our 5th anniversary. We had dinner here and was pleasantly surprised. We ordered the Dungeness Cocktail, Local Clams, Taiwan Shrimp and a Steak. Everything was delicious....especially the clams. The staff was attentive and the food was yummy. We will be back the next time we're in town.

Great steaks! I got the filet mignon. I've had steaks in over a dozen countries and this steak was one of the top five I have ever had. Amazing food and great service. If you are willing to spend $50 a meal then come here!

BF and I went to PA for the weekend and saw that this place was on top of the list for reviews in that area; so we decided to check it out. The pictures on this website, don't do this place justice. We were kind of weary from the pictures, but then walked in and it was cozy and nice. We were seated in the bar room and it was pretty busy, the bartender, Will was also the server. So coming from server's experience, I was thinking to myself... this guy isn't gonna handle this. But to my surprise, this guy was juggling 6 tables at once, and making drinks for the other servers. Not once did he come to our table out of breath or rushing/talking fast or anything. Totally polite, gave us our time to answer him back and brought exactly what we asked for!
Now on to the food! I asked Will what he thought was better, the dinner Taiwan Prawns ($18.99), that come with your choice of potato and veggies or the Penne and Prawns($16.99); He suggested that he liked the penne and prawns better so I went with that. I'm glad I listened to him... it was very tasty... I never would have thought to top pine nuts on a scampi but it was great! My bf ordered the taiwan shrimp... he was a little disappointed, he never had eaten lobster tail before, so for him to work in this jumbo shrimp that was butterflied and still in the shell, was a little frustrating, he said he didn't like to have to work so hard for such a little amount of meat. (Which is understandable if your not used to it). He also mentioned that his garlic butter sauce he had to dip his shrimp in was just butter, not enough garlic, so he was dipping his shrimp in my plate haha! We ordered the Artichoke dip to start.... def tasty and worth the $10. We weren't rushed at all and our water glasses were constantly refilled by the bus boy and once by the hostess! They did a great job of helping our server out so the customers were attended to. All in all, def a great experience! We will def come back to this place next time we come back to PA as there were several other things on the menu I want to try!!

Came here while working in Port Angeles, WA down at the docks on a ship.

Came with a co-worker, after a long day of working and was STARVING.

Order the 12oz prime rib and loved it. Nicely sized and perfectly cooked. I cant remember what the co-worker got otherwise Id be bale to let you know at least how good it looked...

The only reason I gave it 3 stars is based on service.. It wasn't busy, we got sat in the back, no where near anyone and hardly had any attention. Pretty bummed. Otherwise I'd totally come back next time I get to work in PA again.

We went here for my birthday dinner as I was craving a steak.

The service was good and the food was decent. I ordered the ribeye ($24.99) and wanted it medium rare. When it came to me, it was medium rare in the middle, but a whole half of the steak was charred and burnt on the outside :(

I have this thing about sending food back, as in regardless of how bad it may be I won't do it. I worked in a kitchen 10 years myself and used to get irritated when food would get sent back. So I ate around it, but lost almost 1/2 of my $25 steak.

The garlic mashed potatoes were delicious, and the sugar snap peas (which were the vegetable of the evening) were perfect.

My husband had the teriyaki chicken breast with the same side dishes. His was pretty tasty too.

Overall it was an okay experience. The food was a little too pricey. We will probably be back but I think I'll pass on the steak next time.

we ordered two appetizers, the stuffed mushrooms and clams with butter and bread, the stuffed mushrooms were so fresh and yummy! while the clams were less flavorful but decent. we shared the shrimp penne which didn't have any sauce but shreds of feta cheese and some greens and peppers which I would recommend if you want to go more on the "healthy side" Our lodge recommended this place and we were glad to take their advice! it's too bad that Port Angeles doesn't have those small mom and pop places to serve seafood a la carte! the seafood here is just so overly priced and hard to find without knowing what's good.
