I've given this place a couple of chances, as I live and work close by....However, it was off to a bad start from day 1.
The day they opened, the owners were in front of the shop screaming insults at each other....Surrounding businesses could hear them...Pretty rough start.....I went in a few days later, as I figured things were a little more calm by then....The ladies were nice....But, they better be to charge the outrageous prices they were charging....They told me that the Croissant was baked "in-house"....What they didn't tell me was that all they did was thaw it out and stick it in the oven....It comes frozen from somewhere else, I found out later....Very misleading.
On top of that, their first employees all quit within the first two weeks....Their original baker, a friend of mine, was told by the owners that he would be making a certain wage, then found out he was making a lot less than agreed upon when he received his first paycheck....More misleading.
There is very little made in-house there....What I tasted, besides the croissant, had the taste of freezer-burn, and was insanely expensive. The place is out of place in it's white-bred Victorian glory, as it's on a tropical island....Why would someone come to an island to feel like they're in 19th Century Europe?
In short, not at all impressed.......NEXT!!
Tucked away down an alley, Buttery is a cute tea room decorated like a pink Victorian dollhouse. I only tried the strawberry mascarpone tart ($7) that the owner recommended. She said that the desserts were made by her or her business partner. The tart was light and refreshing on the hot day, esp. sitting in the breezy alleyway. Most of the other cakes were $8. Visiting from California where I can easily find more delicious cakes for the same price or less, Buttery was just ok. However, I imagine for others that live in Kauai, Buttery might be a wonderful place to escape for a few hours and feel like you're no longer in Kauai.
