Had just come out of the canyon not looking our professional norm....did not get seated or treated fairly...were told that 3 call-aheads were ahead of us....watched 6 parties of regulars get seated as we were ignored...we walked out the door and fellow came out to say we were next...yes, that was correct 3 seatings ago. Can't enjoy a meal where everyone is not treated fairly.
Review Source:It wasn't difficult to find, but the food was disappointing, at best. Â The infamous catfish was horrid to look at and tasted of stagnant pond water. Â The duck had no seasoning and the accompanying mango salsa was hardly present. Â Most duck dishes arrive on polenta or some type of root and involve a reduction sauce. Â This was thrown on the plate and a meager bowl of black beans (unseasoned/canned) was the side. Â The waitress was less than stellar and insisted my husband order the special "to save money" even though he argued that he didn't care. Â She brought out what SHE wanted him to have, instead of what he ordered. Â I ordered the coconut cake ($8) to-go and I'm attaching the photo. Â I actually can't tell what it is and I'm not sure I'm willing to try. Â $67 down the drain. Â Added bonus? Â Dry county! Bring your own wine. Â Maybe that's why my duck was so dry? Â Hmmmmmmm
Review Source:One of the best meals in a long time. Â Outstanding service. Open Wed. Thru Sunday for dinner only. Â Had the whole grilled trout which is fresh from a local trout farm. Unbelievable seasonings. The apple walnut bread pudding has to be one of the best desserts I have ever had.
A little pricey but not bad. Definitely will not be disappointed, well worth the trip.
Wow! Totally unexpected. This restaurant is literally in the middle of nowhere. Hats off to the Chef and staff. I got the Pork tenderloin with a rosemary sauce, garlic mash potatoes, and apple pecan bread pudding.. Made my palate so happy! Coat was high but reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. I will definitely recommend this to all the foodies out there that read this review. Oh yea, my husband got the filet mignon ... Truly melts in your mouth and bursting with flavor!
Review Source:We headed up the mountain last night in the pouring rain for our first visit to Canyon Grill. Â We had "called ahead" for an 8 pm seat and arrived at 7:30. Â There were 3 couples ahead of us, and we were delighted to be seated before 8:00 at a packed restaurant. Â
Appetizers: Â I had the Rajas, a very generous portion, which could have been shared. Â Did not stop me from eating every single bite! Â My husband had the fried oysters, another winner. Â Entrees: Â For me, the duck with mango salsa .... two large, lovely pieces, grilled-to-medium rare perfection! Â I brought one home. Â Hubby .... the grilled shrimp (plump & firm) and fried okra. Sadly, we had no room for dessert!
The only drawback for us (and this is minor) was the noise. Â We could not hear our waitress and had to raise our voices to hear each other. Â Since there were two dining rooms, I kind of wish they would park all the very large groups on one side and perhaps save the other for smaller parties. Â Don't get me wrong, though, the jovial and happy atmosphere of the place wins over the noise. Â Service is suberb. Â
Also, be prepared to be disappointed if you dine later in the evening ... they tend to run out of things and the menu is kind of small to begin with. Â I understand why this happens and I don't fault the restaurant. Â They are serving wonderful, fresh foods (I imagine their freezer is quite small).
BYO beer or wine and this place does not charge a corkage fee, which I admire. Â A corkscrew is sitting by the salt & pepper on the table, so you open your own. Â In fact, if you do have to wait for a table, they have a set-up in the front so you can grab a glass and enjoy your wine while you wait. Â Smart.
This will definatley be a destination point for us many times over.
NOTE: Â the physical address is NOT 28 Scenic Highway! Â Check their website for directions.
I think Canyon Grill is the best restaurant on Lookout. Then again, unless I'm forgetting one it's only competing against the two other restaurants on the mountain. They have specials on Thursday and Friday, but I can't remember both. One is the fried chicken with tomato gravy which is absolutely incredible. The mashed potatoes are very good, and so are the crispy potatoes and crispy squash. The service is exceptional and the atmosphere is pretty classy for Dade County :)
Review Source:Excellent service excellent food...dress casual. Bring your own wine. Its  fine dining in the middle of nowhere without an ounce of pretension. A lot of Lookout Mountain residents know about this sweet spot.  The owner of this place also owns Sugar's ribs on the ridgecut of Chattanooga and the Boat House that sits on the Tennessee River. Both excellent choices as well :)
Review Source:The Canyon Grill is my favorite restaurant in the Chattanooga area. Â The seafood is flown in to ensure freshness, and the grilled red cabbage and fried okra are the BEST! Â I've loved everything I've ever had here. Â How in the world did a restaurant make it in this location, you might ask? Â Because the food is always excellent. Â And an added bonus is that they don't serve beer or wine in their dry county, so you take your own and get just what you want . . . . and save money!
Review Source:I cannot believe more people have not reviewed this little gem!
This is by far my favorite restaurant in the area. Â I use every special occasion as a chance to make the hour long drive.
My favorites are the Rajas (think grilled pepper and cheese tacos) and Coconut Cake (the kind with the moist juicy interior, rich and delicious....sigh and smile).
Frankly however it is in the middle of nowhere, but always packed (a testament to the great cooking). Â So if you are up for it, head up the mountain for a meal that is definitely worth the drive!
Something to know: BOYB (and WIne)....it's dry county, or something.
Canyon Grill is my favorite place to eat in or around Chattanooga. Â It's a bit of a hike up Lookout Mountain, but it's worth it. Â Most of the food is grilled, including a lot of the vegetables and side dishes. Â I have an ongoing obsession with the grilled okra. Â The slash and burn catfish is great. Â The filets are pretty phenomenal and be sure to save room for dessert. Â I highly recommend a slice of coconut cake. Â You'll also need to bring your own wine--Canyon Grill is in a dry county.
