What a cute place! I've always lived in the area but have never been to Carmella's until the other night; it's my boyfriend's favorite place. I had the shrimp riggies which were great-- I'm a huge riggie fan and was very satisfied with what I got, though I do wish there was more sauce.
If you go, make sure to order the cannoli waffle sundae for dessert... Absolutely incredible! It's vanilla ice cream with strawberries, chocolate chips and whipped cream, with a waffle with cannoli filling on the top. Make sure you save room!
Went today for their Sunday breakfast which I never knew about, it was great.
Big portions and so cheap it was almost free!
The atmosphere was also more enjoyable than a crowded, noisy diner.
I have always enjoyed going there for dinner, but I definitely think I found my Sunday morning breakfast spot.
They're known for their homemade pasta so went for the spaghetti and meatballs/italian sausage. The pasta was a little curly (not typical straight pasta) and hearty. It had a nice bite so not at all mushy. The sauce was "meh" with not much flavor. I had to add salt which is not typical of me. The meatballs and the sausage were delicious though.
For the soup I had lobster bisque which was thicker than I thought it'd be and was a little spicy. Too heavy before a pasta dish. The bread was warm although nothing really special.
I ordered a traditional cannolli to go and it was yummy. A thin tube was lots of sweet ricotta filling and mini chocolate chips. The shell was crispy which meant that it was freshly filled with the cheese and not sitting around so it's soft and icky.
The service was attentive, friendly and fast. The seating was comfortable and the interior was cozy. I loved the music - old school late 70s and early 80s. Reminded me of my disco days in my teens :-)
Cost was less than $12 for the dish. Soda was about $3.
Awful. Â All there is to say. Â Not a single original item on the menu. Â
Went there for happy hour once and the next day noticed that the bartender over charged me $50. Â Took me two weeks for me to straighten it out with them. Â And they were extremely rude when I went in to try to figure out what happened. Â Basically found out that the bartender was trying to rip me off.
This place is great for lunch or an inexpensive, no frills dinner. Â As a child, this was my favorite restaurant and as an adult, it still satisfies.
The bread they serve pre-meal is extremely delicious and has a slight toasting to it. Â It comes with garlic butter and it's very hard not to fill yourself up before your actual meal comes.
The Italian food is decent here but I generally don't LOVE their sauce. Â The Italian Wedding Soup is wonderful and I've had a few "soup of the day" selections here that were right on the money as well (including a bacon baked potato, yum). Â
Their Steak and Greens wrap is probably my favorite thing to order. Â Now that I live outside of the Utica area, greens simply do not exist anymore, which bums me out. Â The Steak and Greens wrap is spicy and the steak is not too tough.
You can't leave here without a homemade cannoli. Â The cannolis here are so big you usually have to share with someone or take half of it home but man are they delicious. Â The last time I went they had a pumpkin cannoli for fall and it was just as good as their original recipe.
Friendly atmosphere, good food, reasonable prices and generous portions. All in all, a winning combination. Their pizza is quite tasty and well done and the Lasagna was very good. The only real disappointment was that the Mac & Cheese on the kids menu was Kraft, but I suppose that's just aiming at the market.
Review Source:Carmella's is the home of my favorite dessert. It's a waffle/canoli/fruit/chocolate/ice cream thing that tastes like perfection. in addition to the greatest dessert ever, Carmella's has a surprisingly delicious burger (surprising because that's not their area of specialty). The pizza is great; the crust to sauce ratio is right on the money.
The staff has always been friendly and helpful. Give Carmella's a try. You won't be sorry.
I usually stop at Carmella's Cafe for some decent Italian food at reasonable prices and the generous portions. I enjoy the Lasagna, Chicken, & Pasta (meat sauce lasagna, Chicken Parmesan, & Fettucine Alfredo) with the fresh baked soft bread & butter and a fresh garden salad with bleu cheese dressing. For dessert, the Cappucino Pie (coffee ice cream & nuts in a chocolate crust, topped with hot fudge & whipped cream) is pretty good. The service on my last visit was friendly.
