I can't review Floramo's without reviewing Champ's. As far as I'm concerned just matters if I'm in the Chelsea area or the Peabody area, both of these places are a draw. Champions is an amazing place for steak tips, everything there is top notch. This is also one of those bar/food places that is in a class of it's own.
I have been eating here for close to 20 years, never have I had a bad meal. The drinks are strong and the Tips are perfect. They have in my opinion, one of the best salads out there; I love the sweet vidalia dressing they have. Champs rice is amazing; their steak fries are cooked perfect.
Champs is without out a doubt a townie place, seems like everyone who ever went to Peabody high eats there, whether they are 16 or 66.
Once again, if you have never been to Champions, get out from your rock, and get your azz over there. Steak tips are to die for.
Great food..... you just have to be willing to wait 50 minutes to get it. The steak tips are everything other reviewers have said GREAT!! But the service is poor (due to long wait time). The staff is friendly but there are minimal and they are super busy so even to get a drink refilled takes chasing down. The bar is kind of a dive (kind of dark/dim, not very updated, only 1 bathroom stall) and has a poor setup for seating. Food takes way too long to come out of the kitchen but it you have the time to wait the food is worth the wait.
Review Source:Ive been to champions a bunch of times and I must say the steak tips are insanely good. The tips are so good I've never ordered anything else and that's A-OK for this place. A solid bar and small atmosphere keeps the service consistent and food fresh. If your looking for steak tips for dinner, look no further. Great local spot.
Review Source:I'm not sure why everyone is so convinced that Champions has the best steak tips around, but I will admit they they were good. I think I was just setting myself up to be let down, but who knows. My tips were varying in size, so some were rare, others were medium, and a select few were medium rare as ordered.
Three stars instead of four because our orders took nearly 50 minutes to come out of the kitchen. Normally this would not bother me, but the manager (owner) came by to tell us they were having a busy night for take-out. Why not just tell people phoning in orders that it will take a few minutes longer and make sure the people sitting at tables in the joint get their meals in a reasonable time?
I went here for dinner one night. Very much a bar. Do not park across the street as you will get your car towed. I had the tips combo which was a choice of some different meats. I got steak and lamb. Both tasted great. Also had a side salad which was ok. Lots of TVs and small pub feeling. They did accept my AmEx card.
Review Source:While I still love your steak tips,,onion rings and italian dressing on my salad..I DO NOT LIKE YOUR NEW HIGHER MIXED DRINK PRICES!!..If you read my other reviews I am a not a fan of dive bars overcharging for a drink!!.a weak,$8.00 rum and coke will def keep me away from coming here. How is it is this day that two lousy rum n cokes cost more than an order of tips (and while I'm on that subject,,I think instead of 5,only 4 tips are served now..prices didnt go up,,but portion went down,,,ahhh sneaky!)..when I asked the bartender if they raised their drink prices,,he mumbled yeas,,and asked if I wanted to speak to the owner so its obvious that others have mentioned this,,not good in this economy. I think Ill take my business to The Courthouse Pub where they are now pushing their delicious tips,,strong, cheap drinks and an always packed house,,,funny Friday night at Champions had 6 people at the bar when the Sox were on ....SIX!!!!!
Review Source:What a nice and cozy place for a surprisingly great steak tips! It was crowded but we got there around 6 on Friday and got a table for 5 right away. Great portions for the Entree makes the ordering real easy. Lamb tips is not recommended at least from our experience but the steak tips were super!!!
Review Source:Thank you Yelpers for guiding me in the right direction once again!
We wanted a bite to eat before seeing a movie in Danvers, so we headed here. It was everything I wanted and more. The atmosphere is perfect, just what I was looking for--casual, local, and laid back. They have delicious beers on tap.
The waitress we had was the same both times and she was, hands down, the best, most attentive, and friendliest waitress I've ever met. I told her how much I loved the homemade salad dressing (Vidalia onion, TRY IT!) and she sent me home with a little thing of it to go. She even remembered us when we came back a few weeks later. How thoughtful!
Okay and the food? Well, I don't think I could do these phenomenal steak tips justice with such a brief review. I ordered them medium rare, and they were the best steak tips I've ever had. I don't know what they marinade them in, but it's heavenly. Beyond words. Melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Just go there and try them, just go.
The bill for 4 beers, an appetizer, and two orders of tips came to around $50. Awesome. This is my new favorite pub.
And then there were steak tips.
I was told to bring my appetite. Â I wasn't even allowed to order. Â Steak tips, medium rare, onion rings, italian salad dressing on my salad.
That's fine, local patron, take the lead. Â I am now a follower of those steak tips. Â They are in a league of their own. Â The onion rings were made exactly how I like them. Â The breading wasn't too thick, thin slices that were crunchy and greasy and lovely and....yeah you get the idea.
This place is a great local watering hole. However it also has some great food. The steak tips are fantastic here. This place is across the street form my house and I frequent it often.
There have been some bad trips when the tips were not as good but overall it is a great place to go when you don't know what to make for dinner.
Also make sure you try the onion rings, they are homemade and amazing.
I was convinced by the reviews here (and word of mouth) to try the steak tips. Let me put them into perspective... they are not going make you more attractive, they won't get you that raise you're looking for and they won't make your car payment for you... BUT... they really were tender and tasty. The best I ever had? Probably not, but absolutely much better than average.
I would recommend the tips as well. My next trip, I want to try their fish & chips.
Yeah...the steak tips are that good. pricy, but good, and you get what you pay for. There's also a wait time on 'em but trust me, it's worth it.
If you don't wanna spend so much one of the best deals is the kielbasa dog. a sub-sized monster of a sandwich, it comes with fries and pickles and will leave you stuffed for 4.50 or so. also way less of a wait time. Fries are meh but the dog itself is really really good.
A solid standby off the beaten path in peabody with great service. Highly recommended.
Tips are great! But Try the steak tip sub with mushrooms and onions! With fries and Jalapeno poppers dipped in cracked peppercorn ranch dressing.
When I moved back from Fl to Mass I craved Steak Tips. I got the steak tip sub and all of the above and I was in heaven! I also won $150 on Keno and had a few draft beers.
What a good day that was!
This place is a breeding ground for ecoli and other food bourne illness. Let me tell you what I seen first hand. This place has an open kitchen number one so you would think the cook and bar staff would be a little more discreet about proper food handling. First off the cook had no bouffant cap on. Next I watched him make severl steak and cheese sandwiches. He was cutting up the meat for the sub roll and then after cutting the meat up he was sucking his thumb and index finger to get the cheese off. He then continued on and handled the bread and placed the meat in the sub roll. How friggen gross is that?? I then observed the same cook using the tongs for raw uncooked meat taking it from the marinade container then using the same tongs to cook with. He did this with the knife too. The bar staff continually was picking at the fries with there fingers then serving food as if no one saw a thing. I did eat but this was before I odserved all this. About 30 minutes after my meal I barely made it in the door before the worst bout of food poisining I ever experienced. I will tell you this the Peabody Board of Health will be notified of this behavior and make no mistake this is simply a display of poor management on there part not to train there employee's the proper way to handle and serve safe food. Oh and did I mnention I will never go back even if they offered me free food! What a disgrace this place is to the food industry! Shame on them.
Review Source:After reading the reviews here my husband and I were craving red meat and were psyched to try Champions. Â We ordered a few steak tip dinners to go and when we got home were soooo dissapointed. Â The fries were soggy and the steak tips were super tough, way overcooked (medium well when I ordered rare) and had a strange aftertaste to them. Â I'm not sure if we went on an "off" night but we aren't too keen on giving it another chance.
Review Source:Yes, the tips are awesome. Â Everyone knows this now. Â I can't say anything that the others haven't about the tips.
The whole place rocks. Â This is just good pub food at a good townie bar. Â Used to go here every Monday after bowling, get myself steak tips and a cold Ballantine Ale. Â The fact that they had Ballantine sold me more than the tips.
The portions on any item are heaping. Â You leave full. Â However, if I can have one gripe, the last time I was there we were served on paper plates with plastic Solo cups. Â That was kind of amateur hour for me. Â However, that's not that big of a deal.
Bonus points for taking the "baseball card" bar and turning it into tables on the side. Â That was pretty cool, the cards took me back to my days of getting one too many Henry Cotto cards in a Fleer pack.
Great place.
Fun sports bar!
Awesome steak tips, delicious bbq chicken, fresh salads, nice rolls.
Enjoy Keno if you wish.
Best steak fries.
I have had the bbq team at the house for one of the catered cook outs, unbelievable job at a fair price.
Can't say enough goods things.
Kevin and Barry are great guys too!
I suppose Peabody was due...
If you go to champions- you go for one thing...the steak tips. Â It would be really silly to go there and order the chef salad.
What makes the tips great is the magical marinade which at this point has become ridden with Peabody urban legend- each story more insane than the next. Â I have heard everything from 'Champions marinade has over 100 ingredients' to 'they ship it in oak barrels from Costa Rica' to 'the recipe for it has been written down and torn into 4 pieces...one lies with Jimmy Hoffa'. Â
Whatever the secret- sitting there at 11am on a Sunday- next to an old dude on his third glass of scotch- you will swear you never tasted a better steak tip. Â And isn't that what a hidden gem is all about? Â :)
Lisa G raves about the steak tips here - so we were kind of in the neighborhood this weekend and decided to check it out.
From the outside I was a little scared. Were we really in the right place? It looks like such a dive, but we ventured in anyway. I'm so glad we did. The steak tips are really that fantastic. And the staff is really friendly and gave us good service here.
Now reading the reviews - wish I had tried the onion rings! There's always next time....
Steak tips are often on the menu in a pub of this caliber - and often the tips tend to be charred little grizzled morsels, occassionally with a bit of flavoring if the marinade isn't seared out while cooking. Â Sometimes the 'tips' aren't even tips, but just random pieces of meat that once were cow.
But for some reason, some local places like this (and Harp and Bard in Dot) manage to pull off the tastiest tips in the world. Â I couldn't even tell you what came on the side (fries? salad? Â dunno) because I dove into the tips like I hadn't eaten in weeks.
Oh yeah, beyond the tips: Â it's a big enough place, and the a/c works (it was about 20 below in there yesterday), they have beer, booze, keno, etc - don't be intimidated by the unassuming exterior that could easily be a dive bar - while it might have fit that category before the apparent recent uplift, it's definitely not a dive now- just a no frills local joint with character, and characters.
Thaks to Lisa G for the push to come here - well worth it.
I've only ordered takeout from this place for the past year, so I can't say too much about the "ambiance" but the last time I was there it was sporting some pretty serious wood paneling and matted carpet.
What I can say is that you MUST try the shrimp scampi pizza. I know, it sounds completely weird and not totally appetizing. TRUST ME. It's going to blow your fricken mind. So. Darn. Good.
Like everybody else says, the steak tips here are out of control. They are juicy, tender  and cooked just right. The onion rings (homemade) and jap pops (maybe home made) were tasty and very crispy. I liked the the thin fries better than the steak fries but thats just me. I'm a huge fan of crispy.
Review Source:DO NOT ORDER THE STEAK TIPS AT CHAMPIONS. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO EAT STEAK TIPS ELSEWHERE, FOR THE EXPERIENCE WILL BE COMPLETELY RUINED.
Holy crap. Champions has officially ruined steak tips for me. I officially will not be able to eat them anywhere else. The steak tips at Champions practically melt in your mouth, are of super high quality, have an amazing taste, and come in huge portions. The adjective "succulent" does not do this meat enough justice. I have no idea how the rest of the food tastes because I never have and never will order anything else.
This place is out of control. I friggin love that the place was booming with regulars. I love that you barely get a chance to sit down before the waitstaff asks you what you want to drink. That, my friends, is the best service I could possibly imagine.
The prices are extremely decent, especially considering the amount of food you get. The beers are average-priced, which is fine with me. Everything is cooked to perfection, and you can tell it's all homemade. I know I'm all over the place here, but that's because Champions is like a tasty punch in the face. I almost don't want to post this because I want to keep this delicious gem to myself.
Champions, although I haven't seen you since your face lift, I'm going to go ahead and assume, it was shoddy work and you probably came out not looking a whole lot different than before you went under the knife.
Champions is located at the heart of downtown Peabody, and by heart, I mean like...floodplain. This place was flooded so frequently last year, it was customary to wear galoshes and roll your pant legs up. But there was a fire to counteract all that flooding, and Champions had to be rebuilt. While I haven't been since the fire, I'll go on what I can remember. My best friend's sister (aka my sister)'s boyfriend works here tending bar and quite frankly....it's not the sort of place I care to frequent. A traditional American bar food menu, cheap dark wood, sports memorabilia adorning the walls....and well, it's not much to look at, but it's a good joint for the locals to chill out with a couple bud lite's and baskets of fries.
But what I come here for is....STEAK TIPS. When your male counterpart survives on 5 food groups, consisting of steaktips, chicken, pizza, burgers, and macaroni and cheese...somehow sushi and sake bombs are sort of pushed to the back of the "to do" list with my girlfriends and I end up at random places to try different variations on steak tips. The ones here are PHENOMENAL. I've heard rumors about what exactly is in the marinade, but who can say for sure? It could be ketchup and vinegar and I wouldn't care. They're amazing. The side salad served with it, is typical. Iceberg lettuce, couple purple onions, standard 2 tomato, 2 cuke combo...psh. Boring. But we didn't come here for that. We come for the tips...and keno. Yes. Keno. For whatever reason, we have a pretty good time putting some money on a keno ticket and waiting to see if we win enough money to go on the bar crawl to end all bar crawls and wake up laying in a pile of refuse....quarters scattered about and maybe a new xbox game or 10.
MUST BE THA MONAYYYYYYYY!
Oh My.
like a Phoenix rising from the ashes of it's former self so does Champion's Pub on Foster St in Peabody return to give us.....
STEAK TIPS!!
seriously, the steak (and lamb) tips at this newly renovated neighborhood eatery are the stuff of legend. grilled to a spot-on medium rare with big, nicely meaty, steak fries these tips knocked me out.
another real stand-out was their onion rings. my, my, i have not had anything like these in YEARS, perfectly fried, fresh, hot GBD! had an order as an app then another order just cuz they were SO GOOD.
go, have a few draft beers, feel like a local, eat. you'll be glad you did.
2/24/12 -- Prices go up, the amount of food goes down, the service remains mediocre at best.
Great Atmosphere, better Food. Â Champions is very unassuming from the outside, but I have yet to find a better Steak Tip Dinner in this world.
Don't bother calling for take out on a weekend, the staff will tell you there is a 2 hour wait (How, I have no idea).
