About five years ago, a good friend of mine told me there was a festival in her town every year.
She said it was called Hillbilly Days.
From that exact moment, I knew at some point I would be going to Pikeville, Kentucky attending this wonderful event. Â Finally, in 2010, it happened.
Hillbilly Days is a wonderful event. I ate fried oreos and fried cheesecake, saw the world's largest steer AND the world's largest horse, and I got to have a few beers at Champs.
Champs isn't the only drinking establishment in Pikeville, but it's the only one my friend and her family wanted to go to. Â They are very well known here, we quickly got a big table outside and just hung out for a few hours while the thousands (literally, 150,000+ people come through Pikeville for Hillbilly Days) of other visitors walked down the main street in town.
We also got a platter of the bbq they were selling for everyone to share. Â I don't know if Champs normally serves food, but if they do, get some, because this was great.
I don't know the next time I'll make it to Pikeville or Hillbilly Days. Luckily, I have my pictures, my memories and my t-shirt that says "It's a Hillbilly Thang, You Woodn't Understand." Â If I do go back though, I'll be sure to be sitting outside here again for a PBR or two.
