For it being a sports bar/college bar, I think that Charlie O's has a great menu selection-- and the food is pretty good. I'd say one of the best things on the menu is the turkey club, mostly because it's actual carved turkey (not slimy deli turkey like some places). I went here usually as a URI student on Friday/Saturday nights, and you could hardly walk around. I would definitely say that this one of the only places that appeals to everyone in town, especially the old blue hairs who come in for their lunch at 4PM on a Saturday.
Definitely always consistant, and great waitstaff/bartenders.
Charlie O's is a great local spot for a good meal - especially if you're in the mood for quality seafood or a homey entree.
For starters we had the calamari app - and asked for the traditional RI garnish of banana peppers. Our waitress also brought a cup of marinara to dip. These rings were fresh, hot and oh so delish! Â I don't know what it is about the peppers, but I've grown to love them with my calamari :-)
For our main courses we went with non-seafood choices - a great turkey dinner and chicken parm. Both were tasty but a minor quibble was my pasta only had a dab of sauce - not nearly enough to coat my spaghetti. Asking for more took a few minutes, but everything worked out fine in the end.
The ambiance is dark, cozy and welcoming. The service was friendly and mostly prompt. We really enjoyed our meal and look forward to going back for more of that outstanding calamari!
I have to admit, being that it is basically a sports bar kind of place, I wasn't expecting the food to be so good. But I swear they had the best calamari I have ever tasted. Fresh from the docks our waitress told us. The dough boys were pretty good too!
Service was friendly and waitress paced our meal out nicely. We enjoyed our visit here.
We have been visiting this area for years and for some strange reason we never ate at this restaurant...that changed tonight! Â Having had our fill of the typical fried fish, chowders, and doughy clam cakes missing the clams, I needed a good meal; and Charlie O's did NOT disappoint us.
For an appetizer we started with the steamers that were served with piping hot broth and drawn butter. Â The clams were so sweet and succulent we were tempted to order a second batch but didn't want to fill up before our entrees. Â My husband had the scallop and shrimp fried combo and they were fresh, huge and delicious; mot greasy at all. Â Instead of traditional breadcrumbs they use panko as the coating. Â It was a generous portion and served with cole slaw and the best French fries I've had in a long time. Â I had the calamari marinara served over spaghetti with the hot (spicy) marinara sauce. Â The calamari were tender and melted in your mouth. The sauce had just enough heat with excellent flavor. Â
Our waitress, Courtney, was friendly and attentive and she also brought us a side of crusty, hot, delicious bread. Â To end our meal we split an order of homemade tapioca pudding that was creamy, sweet and probably the best we've ever had. Â All desserts are homemade and I would bet equally delicious. Â This place will be a sure stop for us in the future!
We first went to Charlie O's in the late 90's soon after moving to Rhode Island. It is nothing fancy but we've enjoyed stopping in for a lunch now and then.
Today I tried the vegetarian panini for the first time and it was better than I expected. Â It consisted of portabella mushrooms, bermuda onions, roasted peppers. My 11 year old daughter loved her tuna melt, my wife liked the chicken panini sandwich, and my 7 year old did not like his hot dog ("It doesn't taste like the ones we make at home" he says.) But he did like the red, and purple tortilla chips. Their fries are average at best. I wish there were more options for side dishes.
Service is average, we've never had any problems. Â The atmosphere is decent, a little noisy - which I don't mind considering I have three kids that contribute to all the chatter.
All in all, it is good for an occasional meal.
As a URI Alum, I have spent quite a bit of time at Charlie O's. It is a fun place to go for a drink, but not a big fan of the food. When the bar is full, it is a great place to spot fellow Rams, but it gets full fast and then your friends become enemies sucking out all of the fresh oxygen.
The upstairs area is nice for parties. The bar is well stocked and the seating is very cozy.
I'll Take a Pitcher Please
Charlie O's. Â Chuckie O's. Â Chuck Zeros. Â Whatever you want to call it, URI students call it home Friday and Saturday nights during the school year and Narragansett residents do the same over the summer.
The drink specials they have are awesome, with the crowning gem being their pitchers. Â You can get one of either Bud Light, Budweiser or Sangria for $6...at any time. Â Talk about bang for your buck...just make sure you don't bang your head somewhere after downing one of them. Â
Does it get crowded? Â Sure it does. Â Why? Â Because it's a solid place to be that sometimes has a Cheers feel to it...where if you're a regular, everyone knows your name. Â So get their early, secure your spot and mingle among the college crowd if that's your thing.
While most of my experience is for the nightlife, I've eaten there a few times as well and the food is pretty good.
A place that I only occasionally frequent now that I'm farther away, many a good memory has taken place at Charlie O's.
I'm feeling it.
Stopped by on a random Monday night to watch the BCS National Championship. Was met at the bar by a friendly bartender and shortly thereafter a very cold beer.
We started with buffalo fingers which were pretty darn good and then I had the meatloaf special. Apparently the meatloaf has been a dinner special every Monday night since they opened in 1990. Yeah, whatever, it's just meatloaf. Or so I thought. Holy mother of all that is good and right in the world. It's meatloaf STUFFED with ham and cheese. Served with a rich brown gravy (just like mom used to make) and your choice of strach - I had the mashed taters and corn. Okay, so, tastebuds watering? They ought to be. Now, about that portion size....easily 2 1/2 inches thick and big. Think of a thick piece or prime rib and how much space that takes up on your plate. Okay, ready for the price? $7.99 - seriously! Ha! Bonus!!!!
Lots of televisions to watch your favorite sports. Pop-a-shot. Five pool tables. And another area that is quieter with just dining.
Upstairs is a martini bar. Couches. Nice place to have a cocktail.
I like this place and in the summer it's even more fun.
Sure, after 11:00 or so it's more of a college student hang-out but that can be fun too!
We are parents of small children and set out to have one rare night of fun with our in-laws in a town we have been residents of for 35 years. We  were harassed by drunk college guys while we were trying to play a few simple games of pool (they wanted to play at our table when another table was open.) Not a single waitress ever came to ask if we needed anything...but after spending a large amount on drinks we got OURSELVES and glasses we bussed OURSELVES,  we were singled out by the bartenders for not leaving the tip they expected. They didn't even know that someone else in our party was leaving more than a 30% tip for everyone in our party...the girls behind the bar didn't know our personal financial situation yet they announced to the bar that we had not left a tip and we were then cursed at and yelled at by patrons as we left to go home to our children and the babysitter we hired for our "fun evening out." We were disappointed by the service, by the way the girls behind the bar didn't attend to us, and then by how we were insulted when we STILL left a monster tip...and we have been good customers for years. Not any more. Don't go here unless you want to feel harassed, cursed at, and treated disrespectfully and unprofessionally by the staff and regulars. They were downright mean.
Review Source:Great sports bar. Â Pretty good bar food - extensive menu with the standard sandwiches and salads plus several seafood options. Great clam chowder. Â It's dark as a tavern should be, but clean with plenty of bar stools, high tops and low seating. Â Also, the servers and bartenders are very friendly which is nice.
Review Source:Hey it's 2011, time for some updates. Â Just had a special the other night called Mexican Pot Pie. Â Delicious! Â Especially with the Margarita I ordered with it! Â It was very much like a Burrito without the tortilla wrap which is replaced by a pot pie crust. Â Very nice. Â Fish and Chips are still outstanding and huge. Â I couldn't finish my fish there was so much. Â Still a great place to go and not spend a lot of money.
Review Source:The menu is impressive, like seriously 10 pages, definitely anything anybody would want, it's bar type food, but it's all really good.
They are very friendly, and have a lot of TVs, one just about anywhere you look.
It gets pretty packed at night when the college crowd shows up.
I have had many many good experiences here, awesome atmosphere, friendly staff, and I would recommend this place.
Great spot for groups and families. Â Very attentive and friendly staff. Â Great menu, and an AMAZING French Onion soup. 3 well maintained pool tables. Â College partying starts after 10:30-11:00 pm, good URI crowd though.
If you're in the Southern RI are, make it a point to go there. Â You'll love it.
Charlie O's place is a nice tavern, close to the beachs and BI ferry. They have a good selection of beers, full bar, and a extensive menu. You will find some thing you like! Â The staff are good, and some have been there for years. I have eaten here many times and it is always good food, with more than I can eat, and a decent value for the area. There are plenty of TV's for every seat to be able to see the game.
Review Source:I want to always love this place, if only because I live within walking distance. Â But I kinda of loathe it. Â I will admit it is a decent place to play pool, watch the games, or knock back a few, but it stops there for me. Â In the off season its filled with obnoxious uri kids. (even when i was one of them, i still found them obnoxious). Â I find their booths to be incredibly uncomfortable and the food to be blah.
Review Source:Charlie O's is great. Â Very conveinent to the Beach House and when I went to URI it was the spot for their Sangria Pitchers! Â I can taste them now! Â
Food is pretty good, I have to say they have the best french onion soup that I have ever had! Â Drinks are always great and the atmosphere is typical to the area a Sports/New England Beachy/Local hang out. Â They have pool tables in the back as well so it is always a good time! Â Waitstaff always excellent as well!
Surprised it hasn't been reviewed. Â My extended family grew up in South County and this is where I like to catch my sports when visiting. Â Gets 4 stars because of the lack of other options around the area.
Best time to go is during Yankees vs Red Sox games as well as NFL Sundays. Â Food is good, not great, but again a good spot for watching more than one game at a time. Â Regular bar type food for the area.
Only major downside is that it is located a few miles from Rt 1 on a road that is often highly traveled by police. Â By all means, DON'T SPEED and please stay in control leaving at night from here. Â If you've spent all day at the beach, this may not be the place to unwind for too many beers.
All around a good place, but not somewhere I'd be going every day unless I had a beach house down the street. Â Great for sports.
