Restrooms were absolutely disgusting - filthy. Looked as though never cleaned. This is often the first impression folks get because  the first thing they do is wash up before their meal. Service was mediocre at best the food was not good not anywhere near the quality of other Chevys that I have been to.
Review Source:Although the food is great, the yelling by the manager at the cooks and wait staff spoiled it all. I've brought guests there since 1996, but I'd be embarrassed to now after the experience I had this week. It was especially uncomfortable because of the intimidation I know the with staff felt. Great food, but nervous indigestion from the yelling.
Review Source:I really love this Chevy's. The chicken flautas are awesome! Plus who could go wrong with chips and salsa with some margaritas? I like the atmosphere and the outside dining is really nice, especially at night.
Only downside is sometimes the service is poor, other times it's spot on. Lately though as we've walked through the door, we've had to awkwardly stand there before someone asks if we've been helped.
Visited this location for lunch today, key word is LUNCH. The servers were attentive, the food came out fast, and it was an overall good experience. The restaurant was less than half full, which I think helped with things going smoothly. We did have to ask for more chips, and refills for our waters, so I gave 4 stars instead of 5. Its a good spot for tasty food, but only if you don't have to wait forever and feel like you're being ignored. They do a good job at the lunch hour, but need some improvement during dinner rush.
Review Source:First off, the bussers were taking guests half eaten food and boxing it up to eat it for themselves!! disgusting!!!! Everyone's food was good, I have a gluten allergy so I was told I couldn't eat anything. I asked for a salad w just avocado, cheese and dressing. Never got the dressing and they brought me a side of cheese and literally a hand full of lettuce! Ridiculous! And OUR SERVER WAS TERRIBLE!!!! He was so rude, had an attitude and never brought any of us refills unless we asked; once we would ask for our refills, he'd say he had to do something else first! I don't know how he even has a job! NEVER GOING BACK THERE!!
Review Source:I wanted a cheap margarita. Â I ain't gonna lie. Â Otherwise, why go Chevy's when there's authentic taquerias everywhere? Â (And judging by the clientele, the authentic Mexican lovers were elsewhere.)
- $11 Midori Melon House Margarita (Grande) - Mostly sour without much Midori, but the grande slowly snuck up on me for a nice buzz.
- $11 Combo Perfecto (Special) - Served with the standard rice and beans, the Enchillada Suiza with verde sauce was good, but the Kickin' Chicken Citrus Taco was NASTY with faux Thousand Island dressing. Â Stay away from the new Kickin' Chicken!
- $11 Nachos Grande - A big heap of nachos with generous chunks of chicken that covered every inch of the plate. Â Big enough for two to share for a light meal.
A little dirty, the service was just ok, and the food is standard Chevy's Tex-Mex. Â It's probably the only place for a cheap, cool drink (Happy Hour) while lounging outside at the patio in sunny, hot Gilroy.
Been coming to this Chevys since I was wee. The service and ambiance used to match up to the yummy food and in the "good ole days" this would of been a 4-5 star review... But those days are gone. The last several (at least 6) times I've gone here, all on different days/times, the service had been AWFUL. Awful enough that it's not worth coming back. Long waits, little attention, no drink refills, etc. etc. - noticeably bad. Such a shame because I love the food (fajita burrito, cadillac margarita, Santa Fe chopped salad, chicken fajitas and *of course* chips and salsa), but we no longer want to go there due to the service
Review Source:Chevy's has gone soooo far downhill. I walk in at 8:00PM Â to get a to go order. I walk to the to go station. Nobody there. There was also nobody up front either. Finally somebody saw me hanging around and addressed me. The food came out. They only had one complete take out container so they had to jury rig a second one. While I was waiting the manager shows up as I'm taking pictures of a filthy tray holding "clean" silverware. He asked me if I had been helped. Really????
I will never go here again. EVER!
If this was based on food alone, I would give it 5 stars. Chevys has been a family favorite since I was a kid, Ive eaten here maybe a hundred times!
BUT the service is so slow here, I feel like I could sit down for dinner twice at any other restaurant. I want to give this place 5 stars, really I do! Â The chips & salsa! The margs! The fajita burrito!
The service is just so slow sometimes that if we don't have a completely free evening to spend hours sitting we can't plan on eating here.
What is that corn mash? It is so delicious. It is a miracle.
Dudddee.........I haven't been in a while & things have def gotten better for whatever reason. The salsa is so yummy I could take it home & eat it on everything.
The menu has been updated & the food is 100% better than I remember. There's a really cool lunch deal my girls & I go for usually & the 2 choice combo is mostly; salad, soup, quesadilla, etc. & the salads are BOMB!
Def have a new appreciation for this business. I'm impressed with the upped taste & service. Good job guys. :)
i was wondering why it was almost empty on a sunday!!! now i know
horrible service not the place it use to be!!!
we order salads and soups for 2 and chicken fajitas for 2
the adults finish there food and the other 2 orders took so long
that i had to ask to talk to someone cause the kids end up
eating so much tortilla chips by the time food arrived
they were not hungry anymore
So this morning I came into Chevy's to watch the 49ers game since my power was out because of the rain. I used to work here so I walked into the Cantina and said "hey guys" to the manager and a waiter as I took a seat (there's open seating in the cantina). A few moments later, after pleasantries were exchanged, a different waiter begins to walk up to me to take care of me and Ken, the manager, says "Oh, he doesn't need anything, it's just Taylor.", which stops the waiter in his tracks. I then say "Actually, can I get some chips & salsa and some water? I'm going to order something to go when I leave." Even though I used to work here, still just seemed kind of rude and unprofessional.
So after a while, I finish my chips and salsa. After finishing them I look around and there's a bartender/waiter at the bar whom doesn't appear to be doing much and isn't paying any attention as to whether or not I need anything. Since I used to work here, I ask one of my old coworkers if they mind if I get myself some chips & salsa and they say its cool.
A while later I finish my chips & salsa again as well as my water and no one comes to fill either of them. Slowly other customers start to trickle in, and despite this fact, no one notices that my water and chips need refilling, despite that they're just feet away from me. I decide to let them hang themselves and see just how long it takes them to take notice. After about 20 minutes go by of no service, I finally ask a bus boy to refill my water as I see that he's bringing a new table chips & salsa. He gladly does so, recognizes me, asks me how I've been, and offers to refill my chips as well.
I even texted one of my old coworkers, whom quit before I did, telling her about my experience here, and apparently something very similar happened to her when she came in after she quit. Seems as if the manager, Ken, holds grudges. Perhaps he told the employees to give me poor service?
Unfortunately, only because of the game and my power being out, I'm still here.
With the accepting of the bus boy, absolutely terrible service and complete unprofessionalism from the manager, Ken.
Oh, and for the record, they treat their employees pretty poorly. The main manager, Alfonso, is even worse than Ken. Â Upon receiving notice from employees that there is a change in their availability, due to them getting another job because of the insufficient hours to begin with, they cut your hours even more. This has happened on multiple occasions to multiple people. Completely vengeful and not understanding at all.
I know for a fact that one of the old managers that used to work here was a convicted pedophile. I'm 100% certain of this because my parents coincidentally rented our house out to him a few years ago, before his conviction showed up on his record. Yes, Chevy's may have not known of this at the time they hired him, but I know that they eventually found out and did nothing. Doesn't seem like a child pedophile should be a manager at a family restaurant. I've even heard stories of employees doing drugs in the kitchen with guests, and that's from someone that's done the drugs with them; proving that its not just some work place rumor. Just not a very professional restaurant.
Would definitely suggest going elsewhere if you're looking to dine in Gilroy.
Maybe it was because my lactose intolerance has decided to rear it's ugly head and I couldn't have any dairy (like quesadillas, flautas or Mexican butter), but I wasn't a fan of the food. Â Fiance and I both had Mesquite Grilled Tacos and they were super dry. Â The refried beans were pretty good though. Â Service was pretty good too. Â Chevy's has lost its charm...maybe that's why so many locations have closed...
Review Source:I have always been a big fan. Before we had a Chevys in Fresno I would drive the 2 hrs to this location. Love it. Â Good wait staff and like all Chevys you want to stick to the fajitas in my opinion. Good cantina too if you're into that drinking until you wake up in someone's rose bush thing. And in case you didn't know Chevys is always a great place to take your kids.
Review Source:I was so impressed by the service here that I had to write my very first review!
So, here I am on a first date, and I meet my date at Chevy's. We agree to sit outside of the bar on the patio. Already,  I am nervous about discussing my wheat allergy with the waitress. She came out with a beautiful friendly smile on her face and had a quick chat with us. What a wonderful woman! She went above and beyond to make sure we had top of the line service and that  there was no wheat in our dessert. I only wish that I had caught her name. She checked on our table, refilled our glasses ,brought the food out quickly, and she was attentive.  She mentioned that she use to live in Texas when I pulled out my Texas ID (So there's my hint if she reads this, Thank you, you were wonderful!)
My favorite part was that even our bus man, Aturo (please say I spelled his name right), had a smile, said some funny witty comments, and  was delightful! He was also fast on his feet and worked hard.
The staff impressed me. I had a great dining experience, and would recommend this Chevy's to my friends and family.
PROS:
* seated quickly
* food good
CONS:
* table dirty
* salsa was spilled inside one menu
* no chips provided until we finally asked
* took cup to refill soda, but not returned for 5 minutes
* hostess & waiter were so-so on friendly scale. No smiles.
* running infomercials on the TV the whole time we were there
The most terrible service I have ever had!!! Â First we enter and are escorted to the right side of the dining room(very few people), she then says to us, "would you like to sit on the bar side you will get faster service. Â We are seated in the bar area. Â 10 minutes goes by, no chips, no offer of drinks.........nothing!!! Â I go back she tells me she will get someone there right away. Â He finally comes we order. Â Lunch comes, we have no silverware and no napkins, needed to request both. Â I ordered Guacamole, the chips were broken into such small pieces there was no way I could use them. Â Terrible service.
Review Source:Today I celebrated with my boyfriend, my birthday week at Chevy's.  I had an e-newsletter coupon for buy one entree get one free.  I was excited when my boyfriend suggested going here.  I had the Napa Valley Quesadilla which I absolutely loved! ...and it is quite  unique with having Granny Smith apples cooked inside! Yummy!!!!  But I will probably not go back to this Chevy's ever again. Â
The reason is because I was celebrating my birthday. Â Not once did the waitress wish me a happy birthday. Â Even then, I do recall on a past birthday, I came to a different Chevy's and the waitress surprised me with a birthday song, a souvenir hat and a complimentary dessert. Â This time, I did not get any of this which in a way was a disappointment. Â I may no longer be a child- have not been one for more then 10 years, but I still like being honored on my birthday just like anyone. Â
However, it did appear that someone else was having a birthday as well as I heard the singing nearby. Â I looked and saw that they got that hat and complementary dessert. Â So why did not I as well?!? Â My boyfriend said that it is probably has to do with how many people are planning to join you there. Â That person appeared to have at least four other people with her, whereas it was just me and my boyfriend. Â But that would seem somewhat discriminatory to me. Â Why would the amount of people that are with you make a difference? ...humm. Â
Also, I could only give three out of five stars because of the waitress. Â She may have been new on the job as she said, but she was constantly forgetful and distracted. Â It was frustrating to get her attention. Â Even from the beginning when my boyfriend ordered some beer, he waited for about 15 minutes wondering when she was going to come with it. Â He ended up having to walk to the other side of the bar to remind her about the beer. Â She apparently forgot. Â
The waitress seemed nice but lacked the skills that will make her do well in her job. Â And as I said before, at least she could have wished me a happy birthday, that would have been nice. Â But even better would have been Chevy's traditional birthday song sung to me, a birthday hat and complimentary dessert. Â I may not ever go to this Chevys ever again but becuase I love the meal I had today and know that not all Chevys restaurants are like this, I will most likely go to another one sometime.
I had a really good experience at Chevys. I ate in the bar area which has a good, fun atmosphere. The carnitas sliders are totally worth going back for and the guacamole and salsa - wow! that's some good stuff.
Going during happy hour made the whole meal really reasonable too.
The "bus-er person" (don't know the official title) is worth mentioning by name - Olivia. She's at the top of her game.
Throughout the meal I watched her rushing around, meeting people's needs, taking care of tables as people left - she never stopped.
Note to Chevys...make sure she's the one training all your other "bus-er people".
Great food, great service - I'll be back.
Took the hubby on Thursday night after an appointment.
We ordered tableside guacamole and chips
Iced tea and water
Food: Taste of Chevys for hubby - taste quality 3.5
Me: Beef Fajita burrito with beans on the side, extra meat. 5 star, DEELICIOUS
Service was a 1 star only.
The service was ok...they didn't refill our chips or drinks until we had to flag someone down. But then once they noticed us in the corner, they checked on us...but limited.
I love the food, but the service was a deal breaker. I will be back and then if they pump up the volume on the service, I will bump up my review.
I do love my Chevys salsa and chips, what can I say? I normally try and avoid chain restaurants(especially any cultural food). But Chevys does a decent job at making white people friendly Mexican food. I usually prefer taquerias where I eat on paper plates in a small dingy hole in the wall(that's more authentic feeling).
This location is similar to all others, chill, outdoor area, large bar side.
Good spot to catch lunch with someone, or if you really aren't creative I suppose you could take a date to.
I was hesitant when I first came here but ever since then, I've always come back. I love the chips they hand out to me while I wait for the food. (It's free too, and free refill as well!) The place looks authentic enough to be called a Mexican restaurant. The music, the environment, etc. The food is great too. It always fills me up before I finish it. Really yummy tortillas as well! (My mouth is watering while writing this review......)
The customer service is fine and I love the elder Mexican ladies that hand out the chips and salsa! They can barely speak English but they make the place so "authentic". Love it.
There are only two reasons why I wilingly come to this Chevy's.
1. It's near the outlet mall.
2. The Mixed Grill.
That's it!
I come here before or after a shopping experience and I only get the Mixed Grill which is enough for two people. It's good with a great selection of meats, chicken, carnitas, beef and shrimp on top of onions and peppers. The butter sauce they include with the shrimp is the devil and somehow gets on everything else. The sides of rice and your choice of beans with a scoop of gauc, sour cream and pico de galo round out the plate. Tortillas come hot and ready to be stuffed with the delights of the hot plate.
This place plays good music too.
I would give them a 5 star but I have gotten so horrible service here on occasion through the 10+ years coming here! Luckily the managers i have dealt with are good to us when we complain so I keep coming back.
Being vegan I am really hip on Mexican food if the place doesn't have lard in the beans. Here the black beans are lard free. We order the tostada salad with no shell (just because), no cheese and no sour cream. Then we ask for extra black beans (no cheese) and tortillas and we make our own tacos! One salad with two sides of beans can easily feed two people! I would say 80% of the time they get the order correct. the other 20% we have to send it back and sometimes they comp it.
The chips and salsa are tasty and the black beans rock :) Happy vegan here!
The kids love it here and always enjoy the food. I make them get fruit instead of fries though because i don't like them eating all crap.
We had dinner here this evening after Gilroy Gardens and can confirm that... yep, it's a Chevys.
Same boisterous, kid-friendly atmosphere complete with the balloon guy. Same menu of decent (though always too salty and decidedly more American than Mexican) salads, fajitas and the like. Â Same friendly service and fast refills on your Pepsi. Â Same kids menu with a good-sized meal for $4.99 for your little people.
Minor annoyance today in that our kiddie meal came with ice cream, but we have an egg allergy and for some reason the kitchen staff was unable to determine whether or not the ice cream contains egg. They were nice about it and appeared to try, but I have to say that it's a bit unsettling to know the cooks don't know what's in their food.
Anyhow, it's Chevys and it's a perfectly fine standby option when you're on the move and hungry.
This is a chain. Do not expect authentic mexican food here.
The chips are good but there salsa is not.
Most entrees are overpriced and small.
Drinks are also overpriced.
If you want real mexican food don't come to the biggest whitewashed mexican food chain of them all this is barely a step up from Taco Bell.
Turnover is high and the service is low so if you insist on going order a lot of drinks to help the food taste better.
I like chevy's for the "fresh mex" type of mexican food and the margaritas... and this is a chain restaurant, but it was just "okay" here...
the salsa seemed a little on the old side. Â it looked gray in color instead of red. Â
the "made at your table" guacamole was good. Â fresh chips came with it too, not the stale ones that came with the gray salsa.
food was typical. Â it was tasty and didn't differ than other chevy's i've been to. Â
margaritas? Â wonderful. Â prickly pear on the rocks with salt is my favorite and they were great!
service? Â it was okay. Â what i liked was when it was time to sing happy birthday (3 times tonight!) the servers straight up scared the birthday person, smacked the sombrero on their head, and sang loud. Â and it was funny watching all the people jump out of their seat. Â ha ha.
Back in the day, I couldn't stand this or any Chevy's.
As I came to outgrow my normal order of Chips & Salsa and a Grande Top-Shelf Margarita on the Rocks, I started to actually like the food here.
You might think it's strange that I enjoy Chevy's food. Â I actually don't understand myself how I like it.
Anyhoo, for the past 5-6 years, I would eat at any Chevy's whenever humanly possible. Â Trust me, I have eaten at probably every Chevy's from the one on Van Ness all the way down the peninsula here to Gilroy. Â
The Gilroy location by far serves up the largest, heartiest portions I have had.
Other locations have always seemed to skimp on my portions in comparison.
This Chevys began our road trip to San Diego where we stopped at as many Chevys as we could along the way. Of note was the special - garlic mashed potatoes, which were yummy. We though they were a local special (as we were in Gilroy the garlic capital), but as it turns out they are available (though somehow not as good) at other Chevys as "Side 95."
Other than the garlic mash, the rest of the visit was slightly disappointing. The Chevys is in an average strip mall, and the salsa was comparable to Newark's (in a  word, not good). Also, whenever I compare the servers to guests on Jerry Springer, that's not a good sign.
