I came here for my 22nd birthday last year, and it happened to be salsa night. Only one of my friends was willing to get up and dance with me, maybe because their dance "class" they had going was actually pretty fun..Or maybe because he was double-fisting two Coronas?
Either way, it's an okay little bar/grill with plenty of outdoor waterfront seating (which is awesome) but limited indoor space that's almost always taken up by awkward non-Hispanics trying desperately to salsa dance. Sorry, but it's true. That was actually a highlight of the night lol.
They do have a full bar, but I've noticed you often have to tell the bartender more than once what your drink order is, which is pretty whack. I also expected top-notch margaritas from Chitivas, but that was not the case. It was pretty average, maybe even pre-mixed.
Despite their cocktails and bar service being less-than-fab, I did get a drink on the house for my birthday.
Also located deep inside the waterfront warehouse, and it can be like a maze trying to navigate through that after a few drinks. Bring a friend to walk through it, it's a little sketchy after dark. If you follow the music, you'll find the place.
- Update - Still a great place to dance, now with better food. Dinner menu got a major reboot, and the guacamole wins Most Improved Item. Â Also, how often does a venue owner remember you 3 years later by your dancing? Service can be leisurely, but, isn't that the point? Don't be in such a goddamn rush and you'll find yourself having a fantastico time.
Review Source:I ONLY give Chitiva's 3 stars because the drink prices are high and it could be something so much cooler then what it is. Â OTHERWISE, the ambiance is one of the BEST in Stockton!!!
They have a lot of local live music esp on Wed and Thrus pm. Â This location is right on the waterfront in downtown. Â The outside tiki bar is clean, large and cool looking. Â
I felt safe going there by myself in the evening. Â But for non-locals please don't go by yourself. Â
VEggie Friendly: yes.
Excellent ambiance...consider the evenings when the back double glass doors are wide open to the patio which face right up to the waterfront which is connected to the San Joaquin River. Â On and across the water way are views of nice boats, the spectacular new Arena and Lexington Glass face hotel. Â The evenings I have been here on the patio, you look above and you see the stars. Â Great for romance or just a nice evening. Â Best is when Latin Magic plays especially on New Years and in the summer along with other bands and comedians. Â Food and drinks are good as well. Â The owner is a nice friendly man who enjoys dancing with the customers (beauties and not so beauties).
Review Source:I got a coupon from http://restaurant.com for this place, and thank goodness because it wasn't really worth it. They only had 3 entrees, so my husband ordered a seafood cocktail and I ordered steak nachos. My husband loved it, he said it's the best he's had in the states. He said that the seafood was fresh and salsa was good.
I, on the other hand, could have made nachos at home that were better. If I pay $8, I don't want canned cheese, canned refried beans, and served cold. I sent it back and they warmed it up, but still. We didn't stay for the dancing because there were some unsavory people there in the beginning that were starting a fight.
This place is the best place to go Salsa dancing in Stockton.
It's a cozy little spot, and they've got a 1 hour lesson before the "real" dancing begins with really nice instructors, and everyone comes here to dance. Â That's the best part about this joint, that people are here just to dance and have fun, not to get laid. Â The music is awesome also. Â So if you just want to go out to salsa, this is the place to be.
I'm a little confused about the cover charge, as I've been here when there wasn't, when there was, and when there was of a different price.
Great stuff aside, one of the bouncers is a jerk.
Liz and Carlos Chitiva have attained the impossible in my opinion by keeping this restaurant/salsa club open!! Â They are there to please....and if you need food....go for the fish tacos or shrimp cocktail, if you need to get your salsa on, Thurs. and Sat. evenings are it......like to kick back and listen to some live Reggae??? Â Sun. afternoons outside on the patio, sipping on one of Liz's signature margaritas, watching the boats come and go out of the marina is the way to go!
Review Source:A friend and I went to check it out and we had a blast.
Lessons start at 9:00 on Saturdays. We got there late so we missed the lesson, but we asked one of the guys to help us (Scott). He was ultra nice and took us aside and gave us a private lesson! We were dancing in no time.
Most girls are kinda hesitant about going solo to dance clubs, because you might not have a partner to dance with.
The men here were the perfect combination of bold (without pushy) and gentlemanly.
Everyone was really friendly, and there was a good mix of experienced and newbee dancers!
Updaaaaate!
Chitiva's this time around was way more fun than the last! Â Funny thing is, not much has changed. Â So an update with a higher rating, how could this be? Â I think it's one of those things where if you know what to expect, then you really can't be let down. Â
So I wasn't surprised that on the walk in, we were hollered at twice even though we parked just a block down the street. Â And when the bouncer winked and complimented my dress, I wasn't creeped out one bit. Â [Side note: I took Grace P.'s advice, and remembered to avoid wearing anything red :) ] Â Once inside, I didn't even bother with the restaurant bar, and stuck to the Cash & Beer only bar on the patio. Â I'm not even gonna lie, I like $3 Bud Lights. Â Don't judge me. Â But when cute Fedora hat guy grabbed me and said, "Hey Ma, let me get atchu." Â I still didn't know what the heck he wanted. Meh, kinda not my type, but a quick chat and hug request didn't bother me. Â
Alright alright, so maybe Chitiva's is an okay, kick back spot. Â Sure, they still serve mixed drinks in red cups at a rate that's painfully slow. Â And besides us, the rest of the girls are a buncha $2 hoes. Â But some of the guys are cute, and most of them can really dance. Â So just don't head out here expecting more than what it is. Â Like I say in most situations, expect the worse but hope for the best. Â I've got wise words, hollerrrr haha.
