This is going to be a great pit stop for us on our trips back to the Hub City. (For my Austin friends, we're talking I-37 South between San Antonio and the Valley... so mark this down next time you're headed to South Padre. Â It's got a Rudy's style set up - go up to the counter to order, choose what you want, slide your cafeteria tray along, grab your beer / your own drinks, pay up front then go grab a seat.
The chopped beef sammich was just okay - too much sweet and not enough tang for me, tasted more of sloppy Joe than what I was craving BUT the same price, the same sandwich is offered as sliced brisket, so that's what I'd recommend. I need pickles with my bbq - they skimped big time BUT I'll just ask for extras next time.
They're conveniently located next to the massive and immaculately clean Exxon, so this is going to be where we look forward to stopping on long drives, fill up the truck and our bellies.
Haven't tried their sides yet... and again, I wish I had gone for sliced brisket which looked amazing.
The rating so far is for convenience, cleanliness and some seriously nice looking patios. They've got a great set up here and will make many travelers happy.
There was a time in Texas when travelling south to Corpus Christi and areas around there had nowhere to stop except gas stations.
Lucky for us, Choke Canyon BBQ was invented. What a breath of fresh BBQ air!
We thought we were pulling into a gas station that served BBQ, BOY! Were we wrong! Â It's actually a separate restaurant from the Exxon with AMPLE seating. I mean like, bring your bus here to stop if you're driving to the coast. It was awesome! It is a completely up to date facility with all the right features.
We had to try a little of everything which included the brisket sandwich, sausage and alligator bites. The alligator was a little tough, but everything else was really tasty. I enjoy the restaurants that have pickle, onion, whatever else you might want to add to your BBQ plate stands.
We were delighted when this restaurant opened and best of all it has some of the yummiest BBQ we've eaten (and we've tried a LOT of places!). Â The brisket is excellent, sausage tasty, great ribs, flavorful chicken plus all kinds of sides to choose from. Â They have plates, sandwiches, and take out.
It is also open for breakfast.
Definitely going to be our "must stop" when we drive between San Antonio and Corpus Christi.
Open 7 days a week.
