This is going to be a great pit stop for us on our trips back to the Hub City. (For my Austin friends, we're talking I-37 South between San Antonio and the Valley... so mark this down next time you're headed to South Padre. Â It's got a Rudy's style set up - go up to the counter to order, choose what you want, slide your cafeteria tray along, grab your beer / your own drinks, pay up front then go grab a seat.
The chopped beef sammich was just okay - too much sweet and not enough tang for me, tasted more of sloppy Joe than what I was craving BUT the same price, the same sandwich is offered as sliced brisket, so that's what I'd recommend. I need pickles with my bbq - they skimped big time BUT I'll just ask for extras next time.
They're conveniently located next to the massive and immaculately clean Exxon, so this is going to be where we look forward to stopping on long drives, fill up the truck and our bellies.
Haven't tried their sides yet... and again, I wish I had gone for sliced brisket which looked amazing.
The rating so far is for convenience, cleanliness and some seriously nice looking patios. They've got a great set up here and will make many travelers happy.
There was a time in Texas when travelling south to Corpus Christi and areas around there had nowhere to stop except gas stations.
Lucky for us, Choke Canyon BBQ was invented. What a breath of fresh BBQ air!
We thought we were pulling into a gas station that served BBQ, BOY! Were we wrong! Â It's actually a separate restaurant from the Exxon with AMPLE seating. I mean like, bring your bus here to stop if you're driving to the coast. It was awesome! It is a completely up to date facility with all the right features.
We had to try a little of everything which included the brisket sandwich, sausage and alligator bites. The alligator was a little tough, but everything else was really tasty. I enjoy the restaurants that have pickle, onion, whatever else you might want to add to your BBQ plate stands.
We were delighted when this restaurant opened and best of all it has some of the yummiest BBQ we've eaten (and we've tried a LOT of places!). Â The brisket is excellent, sausage tasty, great ribs, flavorful chicken plus all kinds of sides to choose from. Â They have plates, sandwiches, and take out.
It is also open for breakfast.
Definitely going to be our "must stop" when we drive between San Antonio and Corpus Christi.
Open 7 days a week.
Awesome brisket! I stop here every time I happen to pass by on highway 281. Â I am fan of their moist brisket, but their other meats are good too. Â The bbq sauce might be sweater than I prefer, but it still tasty. Â The ribs, although definitely not fall of the bone type, have a very tasty rub on them that I enjoy without any sauce. Â I like their condiment bar where you can get as much pickles, onions, pico de gallo as you want. Â You can even ask them for a bigger styrofoam container if the little cups are not enough. Â
All in all, worth a stop if you happen to be driving by.
Choke Canyon's brisket is a thing of beauty. Â It has changed my definition of BBQ forever. Â Now, most places are on a completely different level. Â It was an incredible show of beef that was both crusty with salt and pepper, yet had a perfect smoke ring and considerable moistness. Â When the cook placed it on the cutting board, it undulated in slow, steady waves--which to me indicated the collagen had been broken down into gelatin, hence the tender and perfectly moist pieces. Â
I also tried their smoked chicken. Â It was good, but pretty much the same as smoked chicken I have had other places. Â Another thing, they have thinly sliced onions, which are seasoned! Â That makes all the difference. Â I wish it wasn't so far away, I would head back there more often.
