im telling you, dont go to this place. the service sucks, please believe me. im not
the kind of person to say these kind of things if not true. the service is horrible,
not to mention the food. i will spare you your valuable time. before i would go back
there my children would have to be starving in the streets. enough said.
Unique idea in having an Irish bar with a huge menu AND sushi. Oh, and don't forget the liquor store that's inside as well. Nice staff but my only complaint was a weak drink. But I can't fault a whole place on one bartender. I did mention it and after dinner I got an Irish coffee and it was nice and strong so I give them credit for fixing the issue. The food was average and the sushi items were better.
Review Source:3.5 stars. Stereotypes are always a dangerous thing. For instance, my initial thoughts about a bar in a strip mall plaza? Eh, I'm not sure about this. In a lot of cases, perception would match reality, but this time I'll admit I was partially wrong. All I know is I really needed something to eat prior to heading over to an Asbury Park show and I wanted to check out this place anyway. Two birds, one stone and surprisingly, no disappointment.
Well, they did have Sam's Summer Seasonal still on tap. What? No Oktoberfest? Fine, let me help the cause to get rid of it. After checking out the menu, I noticed it was pasta night. Sounds good. Penne with meat sauce and garlic bread it is.
Then the unthinkable happened. A man sat down next to me at the bar and ordered a Genesee Cream Ale. Wait, WTF? I haven't seen or heard of that since I lived back in western PA years and years ago. Yep, they have it on draft for only $1.75. I couldn't believe it.
And yeah, I had one too.
Okay so it is a pub, Irish themed with the usual stuff, burgers, clamari, french dip sandwiches. Â Went on a Thursday night, we live in the area and never had ben. Â Pl;ace is what you would expect, fake tiffany lamps, booths, large bar, a few high tops, all okay. Â Now the food -- I judge a place by their burger....too bad for them. Â Why do waitresses even ask: " how would you like it cooked?" Â It comes out like a hockey puck, tastless and tough, cheap roll, unripe tomato ( this is August in Joisey for God's sake- if you can't get a good tomato then - give up. Overall service was poor, place was typical and food was abysmal.....glad I only tried a burger and didn't waste my $$ on something more expensive.
Review Source:Clancy's is owned by the same people who own Kelly's in Neptune. It is almost the same menu in a larger setting. Â The beer is cold. Â The food is good hearty pub food. Â I have had full dinners and simple sandwiches with good results. Â
The staff is friendly and service is always good. Â It is a quality place for family dinners or just grabbing lunch at the bar.
Was very disappointed with Clancy's. Â Came here on a weeknight, which was not crowded at all, for a late dinner/drink. Â We sat at the bar and it took a good 5 minutes to be acknowledged. Â Tried to ask two different bartenders for menus, who just walked right by and ignored us. Â Finally a different bartender gives us menus, who was pleasant. Â We ordered beers to drink, which tasted watered down. Â Put in an order of appetizers and a couple minutes our dinners as well. Â It took about 15 minutes for our appetizers to come out, which were the little corn dogs. Â They were decent. Â We ordered a burrito and a club sandwich. Â It took 40 minutes for us to get our food. Â We saw a man sitting next to us, who arrived a long time after us, get his food before we did (cooked seafood). Â We finally ended up asking for it to go. The club sandwich was good but extremely small. Â The burrito was ok. Â The fries that came with the sandwich were cold. Â I don't understand why it took so long to make a sandwich and a burrito. Â There were plenty of staff standing around, doing nothing. Â I was highly disappointed with the unfriendly staff, slow service and mediocre food. Â I will never go back there again.
Review Source:Decent food...nice crowd...real Jersey shore flavor. Â Dining area is good if you are lucky enough to get a booth BUT the tables are AWFUL. Â The 4 chairs don't fit under them properly & it is very uncomfortable eating like that. Â We have walked out instead of sitting at those tables.
Review Source:I haven't been here in a while. Their menu has changed significantly. I came here with my friends, late on a friday night. The bar ran out of a lot of things to make drinks. The wait staff downright ignored us. We waited forever for drinks and for food. We cleaned up our dishes and waited for the receipt but no one came. Once someone did come, they told us we were rude(simply because we were all foreigners is no reason to treat us this way) We all spoke fluent english. We were told to pay the tab and get out. Definitely not going here again.
Review Source:Ate at Clancy's two weeks back during lunch and decided to have a few cocktails as well. Nice drink special prices. Â I always get the same thing there- the small reuben- it never disappoints. Â We split an order of wings that were very crispy and came with ample blue cheese/celery. Â The prices are decent and the food always seems consistent.
Review Source:An upscale, but not by much if there is such a thing, Kelly's Corner Tavern which is owned by the same people. Â Again a rueben delights as well as the burgers and most of their other menu choices.
Nice place to hang at the Jersey shore and wile away the summer days or maybe even winter days.
Thursday night Pasta Special's have gone downhill, would  not serve this to a dog if I had one...service sucked, had to beg the waitress for another cocktail to wash down the taste of the fish that should have been throw out days ago!!! Stay with the bar food and burgers, they can't mess that up.
Review Source:for someone on a tight budget this is one of the few places you can eat cheap (and healthy too) in the shore area.
the potato soup can't be beat and the portions are reasonably priced and portions are good.
anyone who says skip this place in favor of the brickwall has got a screw loose!!
Wow! We have been going to the shore for at least 2 decades and we have seen Clancy's so many times and we never went  in because  it just looks like a bar from the outside. But we were refereed  by a local for dinner and we loved it!
It was unlike any Irish bar or any bar at all that we have been to. I can say with confidence it was the best bar food I have ever had anywhere!
The menu was extensive and there was something for everyone. They have a healthy section, the usual burger section and very unusual and delicious appetizers as well as many other sections. I wanted to take a picture of the menu but didn't get around to it.
This is our first visit but we are sure to become regulars while in this area. The crowd was really diverse, groups of different kinds were there. There were older people, groups of young people just old enough to drink, motor cycle people, what is known as the Asbury Park tattoo people, hipsters, surfers, groups of every kind of cultural group you could think of. I think it is because they are in a strip mall between Ocean Grove and Asbury Park. They are resort beaches with hotels bringing in tourists and even if you look at the Yelp reviews here there are other New Yorkers, people from San Fransisco and other states as well. It isn't just a neighborhood bar/restaurant.
I had fresh caught seared Ahi tuna, with fresh Jersey corn, our guest had a burger wings and fries, my husband had a pastrami sandwich and fries. All of the food was really good especially mine. We also had a delicious and unique appetizer of mini corn dogs playing on the Jersey shore theme no doubt.
We were too full for dessert but they also had an extensive dessert menu and our Jersey shore friend told us they have a pastry chef on staff.
My husband said the beer on tap was cold with chilled  frosted glasses. He said they had all kinds of beer on draught and they had Harp beer which he had. He tried one other beer that he didn't like and he sent it back and they gave him another one no questions asked.
The restaurant inside is cavernous. From the outside it looks small. It has a really friendly vibe. The only reason I do not give it 5 stars is I have only been once and haven't tried that many dishes and also it is a bar restaurant. I have never given this type of place 5 stars but I am tempted it is really more like 4 and a half stars. I am pretty impressed with it's uniqueness.
We have never been to a bar/restaurant  like this. It is the best Irish  bar/ restaurant that we have ever been to and we are well traveled. The prices are really reasonable and there is something for everyone no matter what their tastes are.
It doesn't have a Jersey shore vibe other than the fact that it is friendly. It doesn't even have a NYC vibe. It almost feels like you are in a bar /restaurant in Haight Ashbury in San Fransisco. Check out this quirky fun restaurant.
Ended up here as the finale to our St. Patrick's Day carousing. Toot, Chap and I came here after starting at Toot's Heineken Crab Lounge and then St Stephens in Spring Lake. The difference was night and day. St. Stephens is great, don't get me wrong, but we were there at like 3:30 PM. and it was mainly a MUCH older crowd quietly enjoying their Corned Beef and Irish tunes. The band, The Snakes, (St. Patrick drove them out of Ireland or something) was on a break until 5:00 pm..
Clancy's was packed and LOUD with a much younger, partying their asses off crowd. A local radio station, The Rat, was on hand, as were some really beautiful Coors Light girls. Clancy's has a huge bar and tables ringing that, so despite the fact it was crowded we were able to find some seats at one of the bar side tables. A perfect place to kick back and enjoy the raucous scene.
Don't know exactly what it is about St. Paddy's Day but it seems to really get the ladies partying. We had a great time and made several new friends along the way. The Coors Light girls came around and chatted and took pictures with us and gave us some Coors Light slag. I got a new DARK green t-shirt that says "I'm a Drinker, Not A Fighter", and there's certainly some truth to that. There was a Leprechaun, named Blarney there, or at least I think there was.
Didn't eat here so can't tell you about that. The place is in a strip mall so that's a little uncool, but we had a blast and would certainly return.
I love Clancy's! Can't count the number of times I've gone here for dinner --all nights of the week -- and I've never been disappointed.
- The drinks are typically large and well made.
- Always a good selection of dinner specials.
- The Irish Potato soup is creamy and generally unbeatable.
- I also highly recommend the burger, the corned beef sandwich, the reuben wrap, and nearly all of their seafood options (specifically the scallops and the fish of the day)
On a non-food note, I have a lot of respect for Clancy's manager/host/PR guy, Chris. He's got to be the friendliest guy in the Neptune/Ocean Grove/Asbury area -- genuine, helpful, and personable. Out of my five stars, at least one has to go to him directly. You'll know him by his smile and handshake.
Fusion cuisine has a deserved bad rap. Â And mixing cuisine's at different restaurants doesn't always work. Â Evidence: Â perhaps you should avoid the lobster at (as Bourdain calls it) TGIMcSlappys. Â I learned my lesson several weeks ago when I ordered the chili at an Irish pub (not this one). Â It was more like meaty, bean spaghetti sauce.
But, every now and then, a place you don't expect pulls off the unusual. Â Clancy's is an Irish place, with great pub grub and the usual Irish specialites. Â Their grilled wings are the best wings I've ever had, and their pastrami and corned beef sandwiches are much loved.
What's unexpected about Clancy's? Â The sushi menu. Â It's intrigued me, but kinda like a fender-bender, worth watching, but boy, I don't want it to be me.
While I was sitting at the bar at Clancy's last week (having a perfectly poured, chilled glass of Blue Moon) I noticed they have a Japanese guy with a little sushi bar in the restaurant. Â
That gave me more confidence than imagining the 'corned beef and cabbage' cook rolling sushi....... so, with fear, trepidation and a slight concern that sushi on top of grilled wings could equal gummy tummy, I said, I'm in -- I'm going for the sushi.
We split three rolls between three of us. Â I honestly can't remember what they were. Â Something with spicy tuna, something with shrimp tempura and something else. Â
Was it the best sushi ever? Nope. Â But it was good. Â Good as in, better than the grocery store good. Â Better than Whole Foods good. Â Good enough to have our sushi plates wiped clean in an embarassingly short period of time. Â You'd think a pack of feral cats had run through the place.
Hanging with the friends and not into a burger, fried, Irish or pub grub? Â Go for the sushi. Â I'd do it again. :-)
The Best Tavern at the Jersey Shore. This is the sister to Kellys in Neptune. You have to try the sheppard's pie. The bartenders and staff are very friendly and they have bingo once a week and you can win things like a bike!!!! I love this place. The crowd is mixed in age and race. This is a true neihborhood place!!!!
Review Source:A bar in a strip mall - go figure? This particular bar just happens to be across the street from Ocean Grove, NJ, a dry town just south of Asbury Park.
Went there last night for a quick dinner and found the menu to be extremely diverse with a separate menu for sushi. Sushi in an Irish bar? Only in NJ.
I have found the NJ equivalent to the Hot Brown (a heart/cholesterol/body fat challenge found in Kentucky, supposedly created in the Brown Hotel in Louisville). But I digress -
The Frank Burger is a cheeseburger topped with bacon and ham and is placed on top of mashed potatoes and topped with blue cheese dressing and buffalo hot wing sauce. Thank God there was no roll included because I need to watch my carb intake. This sandwich was great and should only be consumed once a year. Oh yeah, it also comes with fries!
My wife had the blue cheese burger which was excellent.
This place is owned by the same people who own Kelly's, just down the road on Rt 35 but I have to say, I like Clancy's better because the noise level is much lower (the ceiling is higher than in Kelly's) and even though it was crowded you didn't feel crowded.
Try this place - you'll like it.
It's a bar. In a strip mall. Does it get any more Jersey than that? Methinks not. It's actually the same owners as Kelly's on Rt 35, which is always packed. But this place isn't nearly as packed so you don't wait forever. The food is surprisingly good - my favorites are the grilled boneless chicken wings and the potato skins and the reuben. And the drinks are cheap - $6 for a jack and coke in a pint glass.
There's a laundrymat a couple of doors down so if you live in the area (or are vacationing nearby) and don't have a washer and dryer, you can get drunk while doing your laundry. It's also walking distance from Ocean Grove, which is a dry town, so that's nice. And they have packaged goods, so you can walk back through the gates into Ocean Grove with your arms filled with liquor and think about the poor Methodist founders of the town rolling in their graves.
What don't you expect from an Irish bar in a strip mall in NJ? Sushi. That's right, sushi. And it's not half bad.
You don't want to spend your entire night here, but it's a good place to start.
