Ate here recently and was pretty happy with the food and service. I ordered one chicken enchilada with red cause and one pork chile verde. Everything was pretty tasty. It came with whole beans and refried beans wasn't offered as an option. The wine margarita was good. The portions were not huge for the price. The service was great.
Review Source:We just moved to Shingle springs from Sac, and I'm learning we were spoiled with amazing food options down the hill. The bean dip and salsa at Colina de Oro had my hopes up as they were very tasty. However, my chicken taco was just meh. Â Also - they don't give an option of refried beans OR whole beans with dinner. Its whole beans only, and they are on the bland side. The tamale, I have to say, was delicious and very authentic tasting. I'm willing to try some other menu items, but will probably only come here out of convenience and a Pacifico.
Review Source:Colina De Oro was the second restaurant we ate at after we have moved to Shingle Springs from the Bay Area. Â We have been regulars here ever since.
I have only tried 4 dishes from here - Birria, Burrito, Tacos and Chili Colorado and all of them were very good. Â I have to try other dishes but I tend to order the same items that I know that are tried and true.
The staff here are friendly and the place is clean. Â The restaurant is a little dated but was renovated few years back. Â I would recommend this place than the other "upscale" mexican restaurant, Los Pinos (which is coincidentally used to own Colina).
This place has gotten lots of great reviews. Â I guess because it's the only Mexican restaurant in shingle springs? It's not horrible but it's nothing special. There's a super cheesy painting of an eagle that we found entertaining. service was eh. chips and salsa were great but seriously a good Mexican place needs more than that.
Review Source:Delicious food, friendly and attentive staff. The chips and salsa are delicious - I've been known to drive from Fair Oaks to Shingle Springs to get chips & salsa to go. If you're in the area or driving home from Tahoe or Apple Hill you should definitely stop by - they're right off 50.
Review Source:Great service and really solid Mexican options at very affordable prices. All in all, a pretty unbeatable combination if you're looking for a quick, unpretentious bite. Four of us stopped in on our way back from Placerville and were seated immediately. The space is big and it was actually quite packed for a Sunday afternoon. Between the four of us, we had a cheese quesadilla, chicken quesadilla, nachos and fish tacos. We all left incredibly full WITH a ton of food to take home. Best part? The bill was under $40 for the four of us!
Review Source:Solid Mexican food. Pleasantly surprised actually. It's near my house and I've driven past it a bazillion times and finally got the chance to try it out. Service was great - except for the Mgr there - her voice is SO LOUD it literally echoed through the place. Chips were fresh, warm and yummy. Salsa was super fresh and peppery. Dave loved his Chile Relleno and my fish tacos were pretty good. I like when they offer me the option to grill my fish - which they did and they cut up the breaded and fried fish in chunks rather than just giving you a whole piece of fish - I dinn't love that but flavor wise, everything was good, solid, fresh food.
Review Source:I don't know what they do to make their food taste so good, but I'm fairly certain their secret ingredient must either be manna from heaven or crack, because I'm completely addicted. I've been going to Colina for around ten years now and I never seem to get tired of it. Now I live in the Bay Area so I can't go as often as I'd like, but it's still my favorite Mexican restaurant and I still visit several times whenever I'm in town.
Colina's food is delicious. I've never had anything bad there and I've tried most of the menu. My absolute favorite item is the chicken quesadilla. The chicken has a delicious seasoning and the quesadilla is also filled with cheese, avocado, mushrooms, tomatoes, and onions and is topped with salsa and a dollop of sour cream. I have literally eaten hundreds of these. Some of my other favorites include the spicy pork burrito, the veggie burrito, the chile relleno, and the chile verde burrito.
Colina's chips and salsa are also top notch. The tortilla chips are served warm and seem a little thinner than the chips many restaurants serve, so they have a delicious crispiness to them. The salsa is tomato-based, with small bits of onion, jalapeño, and cilantro. It's only mildly spicy (which is unfortunate), but flavor-wise it's great.
Their portions are large, but that's pretty typical of Mexican restaurants. A burrito, for example, is similar in size to one from Chipotle (quite big), but it also comes with beans, rice, chips, and salsa, so you definitely get full.
Their prices are modest for a "sit down" Mexican restaurant. Most items are around $7-$10 at lunch and $9-$12 at dinner, plus tax and tip. Those prices include beans and rice, but you can also order food a la carte for a little less.
The wait staff is great and has always been happy to give me a copious amount of beverage and salsa refills. The kitchen is amazingly fast, too. Often, the food is on the table five minutes after I order it.
For groups, Colina has a second room that probably holds around 20 or 30 people, but make sure to call a few days in advance so they have time to schedule enough wait staff.
Colina has great food, but now let me talk about what it's not. Colina is not a fancy restaurant where you would take someone to impress them. Its atmosphere is a little dark and the tables don't afford much privacy. It's also not a place to go to party. The Colina de Oro in Shingle Springs (which is the one I'm reviewing) doesn't have a full liquor license. They offer bottled beers, wine, and wine margaritas, but no tequila or other hard alcohol. When you go to Colina, you go for the food.
If I had to choose one thing about Colina's food to complain about, it's only that none of their food is particularly spicy. I don't think they cook with anything hotter than jalapeños, which is disappointing, and even the jalapeños are used sparingly. However, I've heard several people complain that the food was spicy at all, so I guess I should be happy that they even use jalapeños (why you'd go to a Mexican restaurant and expect the food not to be spicy at all is beyond me).
So to recap:
Pros:
+ Excellent Mexican food
+ Large portions
+ Reasonable prices; most lunches are around $7-$10 and most dinners are around $9-$12
+ Can accomodate parties of 20-30 in back room
Cons:
- Atmosphere isn't great
- Only beer, wine, and wine margaritas, not a full bar
- Food isn't very spicy (in my opinion)
Bottome line:
+ Go to Colina right now for great Mexican food! The cons are petty when compared to the excellent food.
