I had been recovering from a two week battle with the flu and was finally feeling like food again. Craving a burger and owed my Godson a birthday dinner. We decided to go to Conestogas and both had a burger, he a Stogie, me a Jr. We were not disappointed. Since it was his birthday he got a free dessert and I joined him. The burger with a side of home fries is pretty much my go to when dining there. Service was exceptional last night which is not always the case.
Review Source:Was taken here by friends. Â Had possibly the worst meal ever. Â The steak could not be cut with a steak knife -not exaggerating! Waitress never came by the table until the end when she asked if I want a box for my meal. Â I told her about the steak and she said I should have said something earlier. Â With everyone else eating I didn't want to wait for another meal. Â Will not go back -needless to say.
Review Source:I will never understand why this place is so popular. Â The food is OK, the prices can be OK or high depending on what you get, the salads are made with (often wilted) iceberg lettuce, the steak is usually overcooked because it's so thin, and I wonder sometimes if they ever clean the floor! Â We used to come here weekly because we only live 6 miles away, but now it's only if we happen to be in downtown Alachua at meal time.
Review Source:This place is great for large groups. They have a wide variety of items on their menu and all of it is good. It's a little odd how old the building is and it just works for them. No need to dress up come as you are. The prices are just right for the food. You get a lot of food. The bad news is the service fluctuates too much. One time its good and others it sucks.
Just a friendly note so you look like a local. Once you get the check you get up and head toward the homemade ice cream shop (north) cause that's where you pay for your meal.
We take our visitors here because it's supporting our local businesses and it's downtown. We love showing off our sweet downtown Alachua.
I wouldn't know how the food is, only because we were ignored as soon as we sat down.
My wife and I went in for dinner on March 19, were seated (the host was nice!) and then ... that was it. We saw people seated after us get service. We also saw several servers just standing around. And there were plenty of empty tables, so it's not like the place was packed. Busy, but not packed.
Ate a couple peanuts, waited a bit, and then left. It's a shame. The food looked good.
For some reason, Conestoga's reminds me of a lot of other "old" places, but without the charm. Maybe it's because I didn't grow up here or come here when I was 10, when I'm sure it looked exactly the same. Anyway, we had a pretty good meal here this past Friday night but it was just perfectly average. We had a SMB(Swiss mushroom burger), regular Stogie burger, and a Buffalo Bird(buffalo chicken sandwich) between 3 of us. The burgers were cooked just as ordered, steak fries hit the spot, and service was fine. It just didn't particularly stand out. I don't mind a dive or even a dump every now and then, but Conestoga's is just a little too old fashioned for me to become a regular here. If I want a good burger in this area, Bev's is doing just fine.
Also, of note, I think they should cater to kids a little more. It comes across as a neighborhood family restaurant so I'm sure it's common for people to want to bring their kids here(we saw a few on the night we came, including our own). But the kid's hamburger is $7.99 and the steak is $10.49. Sure, the burger isn't a terrible deal since it's pretty much the same size as the adult burger, but therein lies the problem. Our 7 year old is tiny and couldn't even finish half of it, so it just feels like a waste. I don't know about the size of the steak, it was probably at least 8 oz. to be that price. But come on... just slap down a little piece of bottom round steak since kids ruin steak with ketchup anyway, and charge $5 for it. Otherwise you aren't competing at all with other restaurants offering very cheap or sometimes free kid's meals, and observant tightwads like me will notice :)
Been visiting Conestoga's for several years, the places looks the same year over year. Â Sometimes there's quite a wait to get in, other times no problem.
The food has been consistently good; my last several visits have been at lunchtime, so I gravitate towards the Stogie Burger, or the equivalent "chopped steak." Â Portions are good, as others have noted, the service is a bit hit-or-miss. Â Large dessert selection.
Find your parking across the street in a couple of fairly large (and mostly paved) lots.
Best burgers in a 50 mile radius. They ground their own beef. Everything is good. The meat is even safe for a person who is gluten-free. Working in a local alachua hotel, I recommend this place all the time. Time and time again people have come back raving of the great food they had. If you haven't been, you gotta go!!!!!!
Review Source:I asked my coworkers where the best burger they ever had was and they all said one place: Â Conestoga's Restaurant in Alachua. Â Haven't found a good one in Gainesville but I've tried a lot out there. Â My top burgers were from Chili's and Fuddruckers prior to my encounter with "The Stogie" burger. Â It was 1 lb of meat on a huge bun with lettuce, tomato and cheese. Â The burger was incredibly tender. Â It was almost falling apart but remained intact the entire time. Â I ordered it medium and it was slightly pink but fully cooked all the way through. Â After my visit, I told everyone it was the best burger ever. Â It was only $9 with fries too. Â The sweet potato fries were the biggest cuts of sweet potato I'd ever seen although the sauce was strange. Â Even with strange sauce aside, this place gets 5 stars with me just because of the burger.
For you Spongebob Squarepants fans: Â I often wonder what eating a Krabby Patty would be like. Â I now imagine its like this. Â Its a whole new level that they bring to the world of burger.
My BF and I were in Alachua for the day getting lost on the back roads for fun, and we decided to check out "downtown" , we were hungry from looking at all the livestock along the way.
The place was pretty much empty at 2:30 in the afternoon. I have never been here before and I have to say the place needs an update. I know its all country run down chic, but its also musty and outdated and screams for a makeover! There were peanuts on the table, I found them a bit stale for my tastes.
We decided to share an appetizer of fried mushrooms and the
Fried Alaskan Whitefish Sandwich which was described as:
One jumbo crispy golden fried fillet served on a toasted hoagie roll with
lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. Served with your choice of side order. 7.99
We got a side of the "garden of eden" salad with house dressing (parmesean peppercorn) The salad came out first and if that was a garden of eden? no wonder Eve was so hungry she had to eat the apple. It had iceburg lettuce, a few leaves of spinach, one round of red onion, two cherry tomatoes and a few peas.
The fish sandwich was a big hoagie roll, untoasted, with tomato and lettuce, pickles and the fish.....which was supposed to be "jumbo" but was one sad curled up fried piece of whatever...maybe goldfish? All i tasted was the bread and tomato and lettuce and pickles. Would never get that again!
The mushrooms on the other hand were awesome. HUGE portion, perfectly fried and juicy.
They have good food. The service can be slow, but there are peanuts on the table to fill you up until the waitress comes back. I've eaten here many times over the years and find it to be hit or miss (depending on the cook on duty, I suppose).
The liver and onions is always a hit with me and has always been cooked properly. The salads are huge, but you can order a half-salad (ha ha, this makes me laugh... a "half-salad") anyway... their salads are based on iceberg lettuce with an array of differing items (depending on the type you choose).
It's a good place to eat while in that neck of the woods, but I wouldn't make a special trip to Alachua for it. Still, it's worth the stop if you're in the area.
I used to live in Alachua and ate here up to 3x per week. They have one of my favorite caesar salads and the staff knows the customers by name. Prices are good and the atmosphere is great. The menu isn't that extensive, especially for non-meat eaters, but there should be something for everyone.
Review Source:We went, we ate, we shrugged.
This place reminds me of Texas Roadhouse (right down to the bread with honey butter and peanut shells underfoot). Â I had a country fried steak with some fairly oily (but tasty) steak fries, and my hubby had a steak, which I'm not certain he enjoyed. Â At least, I took his asking to feed the remainder of the meat to a friend's dog to be a bad sign.
A lot of my coworkers think this place is wonderful. Â If I end up in Alachua due to career relocation, I suppose I could get used to it. Â But right now, I don't think it's worth the drive--even though the drive is barely 14 miles. Â 2.5 stars.
This place is about half way between Orlando and Tallahassee, and pretty convenient to I-75.  Had a really excellent dinner here, and was impressed by their late hours -- walked in at 9:30pm and they were still open and happy to serve.  Can't speak to the steaks, since I tried the ground chuck and my husband had an excellent  burger, but those were great, the bread was hot and delicious, the salad was standard, and the snickers pie ... oooooooooooooh yum ^_____^  They were depressingly out of their famous key lime pie, but I hope to get to try that out next time I'm between Orlando and Tallahassee.
Review Source:I'm surprised at the not-so-great reviews that Conestoga's has been given. It is a bit of a drive, but downtown Alachua is pretty and it's halfway between my house and Greenery Square's new location. I've only ordered the steaks here and I found them to be well marinated, tasty and cooked as I asked. The steaks are aged. It's one of the few places I found that when I ask for medium, I get medium. Their house salad is simple, has iceberg lettuce and peas, but I like their Parmesan peppercorn dressing which is made in the restaurant. The desserts have always been good. Mashed potatoes could be better, but overall I always enjoy coming here. The building is pretty and historic. My hubby has the burger and it is insanely large, but he says it's good. I've only been at lunch on Saturdays and found it to be relatively inexpensive for what we've ordered and not crowded at all. Overall, I like this place.
Review Source:I was passing through Alachua for work, and I decided to give this place a try as I have heard about it (due to their infamous burgers). Â There were a lot of people waiting to get in (but this is probably one of the only places to eat in the town,so I guess that doesn't mean a whole lot). Â The food was good, but nothing to be too excited about. Â I doubt I will drive from Gainesville especially to eat there.
Review Source:I've been to Conestoga's three times over the last two years. It's out of my way so I don't visit as often as I do my local restautants. It has never been that impressive to me but my last visit sealed the deal. About a month ago a friend and I drove out to Conestoga's to eat somewhere different. It was a waste of $50. I ordered their special for the day which was a steak and shrimp dinner. I asked for the steak medium and it was delivered well done and VERY dry and I could only eat half of it. The shrimp were ok but nothing to write about. I doubt I will waste my time or money again.
