I stopped by here with my group for some drinks (for those of you who have read my other recent Cooperstown reviews, you may be picking up on a trend with this statement...). It wasn't a bad experience but the staff -- all two of them -- seemed to be pretty overwhelmed by the number of customers. It's not a large place (at least not from the perspective of where we were sitting). There were a few tables -- all of which were filled -- right where you walk in. We sat at the bar, since we were only ordering drinks, along with a decent number of other people.
I tried a few of their beers (although I can't remember what any of them were named), and they were all pretty good. The others who were with me agreed that they had some good beers on tap.
Understandably, the two people working here -- one working the bar, the other working the kitchen and apparently helping to wait on tables -- had a tough time keeping up with everything, and the guy at the bar in particular was starting to show his frustration. He wasn't rude, but you could tell he was stressed.
Despite that, we had a pretty good experience, but I would certainly like to try it again under better (and smoother) circumstances.
The beer was pretty good. I enjoyed their new Red Ale as well as the Scotch Ale.
I was pretty disappointed in the food- I'd give the food 2 stars. I had the Portuguese Grilled Chicken Breast Salad for $8. I got a plate of greens, a chicken breast, onions and tomatoes. Bleck. The dressing was nice, the chicken was tender but it was a huge let down of a salad.
My pal got the pulled pork sandwich and MAN that may have been the worst pulled pork I've ever had. It was incredibly TOUGH.
Bonus- garlic, pesto fries are good.
As others have said, I'd focus less on the food- have a few GOOD items: hot dog, hamburger, fries and call it a day. The beer is the main draw here.
Get the five-beer sampler plus one more to try all six super fresh, delicious brews on tap. For us, this included two guest beers, a nice malty blonde and an APA, and the house Full Nelson (hopped with Nelson Sauvin), fruity IPA, a nicely bitter brown, and our favorite the Sunken Island Scotch Ale. Two beer-braised bratwursts and a huge pile of sweet potato tater tots later, we were ready to roll... ourselves... the rest of the way to Cooperstown.
Don't expect anything upscale about the decor here except for where it counts: the glorious multi-wood bar and lathe-turned tap handles made by a friend of the brewer. More seating in the back and at picnic tables outdoors. Perfect first stop after a long drive for a weekend enjoying the best Cooperstown has to offer (in our book): beer!
Good beer and good food. Â I had the sampler which was a great representation of their beers. Â I tried a pint of the Sunken Island and the Full Nelson and was pleased with both. Â The staff was friendly and made great company as I tried the beers and food. Â The only two negatives were the lack of a stout and they only had 2 beers available for to go but only in growlers. Â If they had beer in singles I would have bought a case of different beers. Â All in all a great stop for good food, beer and company!!!!
Review Source:My experience was less stellar than those that others have posted here. Â My wife and I travelled a fair bit to Cooperstown with a real purpose to visit Council Rock Brewery. Â We arrived early on a Saturday evening - 5:15ish - to disappointments on being informed that the establishment was already out of Chorizo sausage, pulled pork, and marble rye bread, but more disappointing was that there was no American Pale Ale. Â It's difficult for me to imagine a craft brewery sans a Pale Ale of some ilk!!!
There were some service issues, albeit trite and perhaps tedious, they too dampened the overall 'experience'. Â Council Rock Brewery has possibilities yet to be realized for sure; 'til then, in my opinion, it wouldn't score a homerun in a Baseball Town!
I was pretty happy to have found out about this spot on yelp. Â It was about half of a mile down 28 from the Holiday Inn Express, so it was very convenient for me on my visit last weekend. Â This place is tricky to find, with low signage and trees in front of the building. Â Not sure why they do not put up a big, eye catching sign, rather than the low, black one that they have.
I overheard one of the servers saying that they will be expanding toward the back, as the front area is very small. Â There was not enough seating for the number of people present, but the staff was good at making things work.
The food and drink were both great. Â We enjoyed the special of the night. fish and chips, and we were thrilled with the large piece of fresh and delicious fish. Â The coleslaw was amazing, and the side of tarter sauce was also a pleasant accompaniment. Â The red ale was great!
The service was very friendly, but I did not think our server was interested in going the extra step to explain anything about the menu or beer list to us. Â The staff seemed to be more outgoing with the locals or regulars. Â I would have loved to heard more about the brewing process, etc.
I will be back on my next visit to the area.
Believe it or not, we stopped in Copperstown for beer, NOT baseball.  However upon checking into our campground we learned that Ommegang was closed due to a concert (unfortunately sold-out Wilco show!!).  Anyway, I was so utterly bummed out as the only reason we came to the area was to visit Ommegang. Soooo while I was pouting, we took a bike ride through Cooperstown checking out the town and beautiful lake.  We stumbled upon Council Rock Brewery (look for the namesake rock in the lake) and enjoyed some really good beer.  Alas, our road-trip  had been saved. The 3-star rating is for the food which was mediocre.  Note to the brewmaster/owner - focus on the beer and forget about the food.
Review Source:Thank you yelp for helping me find this gem! We stopped here after the baseball hall of fame and ommengang brewery. This was the best stop of our day, by far.
It's great to see a family work so hard to create such a wonderful product. It is a very no frills type of place, but the food, beer and service was outstanding.
They had 6 different beers (all made onsite) to try. All pints were $5 or you could sample them for $1.50 each. I had the full nelson which was light with just a touch of fruitiness and a bit hoppy. It was great! My boyfriend had just about every other... (I was the driver!) and he loved them all, but especially the Scottish Ale.
The food is real honest homecooking. We shared the bratwurst sandwich for $7.50 (we made the mistake of eating too much at Ommengang- this was way better) We ordered a side of the pesto and garlic fries that everyone talked about ( I think this was about $4 more) and they were so worth it. They came in a huge basket.
I really liked the relaxed vibe of this place. The conversation was good and it just felt very homey even though we'd never been to Cooperstown before. A must stop on your trip to Cooperstown!
This small brewery knows what it's doing. Â They have a German Light Ale with the cleanest Noble hop character I've tasted from a brewery of this size. Â Add to this the friendly brewmaster (Roger), good food, and a hotel within stumbling distance, and you've got an answer for what to do with the rest of the day after your visit to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Review Source:Hmm. Let's see... Food was awesome. Had the chicken chorizo with red potato salad, wife had roast beef with absolutely to die for pesto garlic fries (I ate most of them). Both were delicious. I really enjoined the beer. Had the sampler and then had a difficult time deciding which to have a pint of. Ended up with the pale ale, very nice citrus (grapefruit) aroma good balance of hop & body. A little disappointed they were out of the scotch ale. Suppose that will have to be tried on a future trip.
