This place opened right after we moved to Dos Palos. After burning out on Pizza and Mexican food, we were itching to find something new, without driving all the way to LB, so we finally gave them a chance for dinner last night. Unfortunately our experience can only be described as "mediocre".
They have a great location, on Blossom street, with plenty of parking. The restaurant is clean and simple (other than an out-of-place HUGE ornate chandelier that my two-year-old was fascinated by. It looks like it belongs in an opera house!).
The waitress that helped us was very friendly and made us feel right at home. I just wish she had been more helpful when it came to recommendations and menu suggestions. She hadn't tried anything on the menu. She did mention that a lot of customers request the plum sauce with the pork loin though... So I ordered it... And she immediately informed me that they were out of it! So why suggest it?!
I ordered a root beer and my husband ordered a coke... But we both received coke. Luckily I'm not really picky about my soda so I overlooked it.
We ordered the $11 sampler platter for our appetizer and all we received were three mozzerella sticks, three tiny buffalo wings and four thin pieces of fried zucchini. For $11???? Unfortunately the buffalo chicken was completely raw too (and I don't mean "undercooked" I mean "raw" and bleeding). I told the waitress that I wasn't upset or anything, but to please let the cook know about it so nobody gets salmonella or food poisoning in the future. Hopefully that fixed the issue for any of you potential future diners.
I ordered the pork loin with brown gravy (instead of the plum sauce that they were out of) and my husband ordered the open-faced roast beef sanwhich. Both of our dinners came with a cup of soup (we ordered French Onion), grilled vegetables, mashed potatoes and a roll.
The French Onion soup was easily the BEST we've EVER had! Delicious, hearty broth, perfect bits of onion, wheat croutons and lots of cheese. Simple and deliciously balanced flavor.
Our meals were not as satisfying though. The portions were descent (not a ton of food, but not skimpy either) but extremely salty. My pork loin was described in the menu as "slow cooker" style, which made me assume it would be moist, but instead I received 4 slices of dry, salty meat that tasted pre-cooked and re-heated.My husband's roast beef was no better, tasting like salted, microwaved lunch meat. Very disappointing.
The mash potatoes, on the other hand, we're delicious. I just wish the gravy that they were smothered with hadn't been so salty. The rolls were nothing special: straight out of a package, onto the plate with a mini tub of butter next to it.
My toddler ordered mini corn dogs and fries. He received chicken nuggets but moments later they brought the mini corn dogs as well and apologized for the error. No big deal. My son thought he was having a feast. Good fries too, thick cut! My husband also snuck a bite of corn dog and said it was pretty tasty.
We closed our meal with a shared brownie sundae and were pleasantly surprised. The brownie was delicious!!!! Homemade and chocolatey! The ice cream was of very good quality too. Topped with canned whip cream, chocolate syrup and a cherry. Yummy!
So in the end, we decided we'd come back to try the burgers some time, but never another appetizer, anything off the dinner menu or anything with chicken in it. I would definitely recommend them for a hot bowl of soup (French Onion, at least) and a nice brownie sundae though, which might be our plan for the next rainy day in town. Very kid friendly too. That's always a plus for us.
My boyfriend and I learned that restaurant had recently opened so we decided to try it out and it turned out to be really good. Â The menu options are mostly barbeque and sandwiches/burgers with great prices. Â We were both stuffed with $14. Â The only thing that keeps me from giving 5 stars is that I ordered a "slow-cooked pulled pork" sandwich that was really delicious but was more like chopped, not-so-slow-cooked bbq pork... not that I'm picky or anything lol
