Decided not to eat the Continental breakfast in my hotel and try Cracker Barrel. Â I arrived at 0700 and got seated right away. Â 10m later my waitress showed up and took my order. Â I ordered french toast, bacon and a water. Â The food arrived fairly quickly(8m) and then it became a ghost town. Â 7m after the food showed my waitress arrived asking how was every thing, I did not get syrup to go with the food so I asked for it. Â
I did notice a local guy that the waitstaff all seemed to know got much better service. Â I was one of 10 guest in the whole place. Â Swing and a miss.
I had high hopes for a good breakfast (and dinner) when I discovered this place just a 1/2 mile from my hotel. Â Unfortunately, both meals I had there were disappointing. Â I had attentive service from the waitstaff, and the front-end Country Store was as nice as any I had seen in other Cracker Barrel locations. Â But somebody needs to have a serious talk with the chef(s) in the kitchen. Â
The breakfast was just plain not very good - the ham was tough and overly salty, the grits were akin to wallpaper paste, the gravy had no flavor, the sausage patty was overcooked, and the cheesy hashbrowns were burnt on top and dried-out all over.
So I decided to give them another try at dinner, and ordered the chicken dumplings with corn and carrots.  The corn and carrots were OK, but the main dish was very disappointing - two pieces of chicken were swimming in a tasteless sauce with tasteless dumplings floating in it.  My waitress was as nice and efficient as she could possibly be, but the food just  plain sucked.
Momma warned me there'd be days like this...
