The location and being able to sit out on the patio overlooking the creek is the main reason to stop in here, I have to admit, but the food and the beer are a very close second.
Their twist on a classic reuben (with cranberry balsamic braised red cabbage) was incredibly tender and flavorful. The lime/chipotle/cilantro bbq sandwich was fantastic for those who like cilantro. Two novel and delicious takes on common sandwiches.
To ignore the beer would be a crime in a review, so I will say that their double IPA is extremely well-balanced and smooth drinking, given the amount of hops and alcohol involved.
The one gripe was with the restroom setup. There was a group of ~10 tourists that came in and ate lunch while we were out on the balcony. Right as we were getting ready to go, they all seemingly headed to the restrooms at once, and it literally was over 15 min before we could use one and leave. While the tourist group is an oddity, I'm not sure what the situation would be like on a very busy fri or sat night.
Came in for lunch - it wasn't busy but service was fairly slow. Ordered the shrimp scampi special, and it was anything but. Tasted like something I would make at home (I'm not a good cook). And it was served with white rice, not pasta - weird. Plain butter sauce with tiny shrimp. I won't dine there again.
Review Source:This review is for a rehearsal dinner held at Creekside Brewing Company. We rented out the entire restaurant to host 60+ people for a seated dinner.
Large restaurants in SLO are hard to come by and it's even harder to find a location that will allow you to host 60+ people. But Creekside to the rescue! My husband arranged the event with Travis (Creekside's Manager) and had a great experience. Travis was responsive, direct, and had plenty of great ideas on how to handle an event of this size. Travis explained that our event would be a first for Creekside and they really went above and beyond to exceed our expectations.
The service and food were great and the atmosphere is perfect for a laid-back, fun evening. We got so many compliments on the location and food.
I've only been to Creekside for weekend drinking and enjoy it more than most bars in town. The porter they brew is actually pretty decent for $6/16oz glass. They have some interesting live bands mixed with cheap fold-out chairs. It can get crowded around the bar and I had to actually wait in line to get in once, but all-in-all have had good visits.
Review Source:Gorgeous patio seating overlooking the relaxing creek!
The reuben was interesting and a unique take on the traditional sandwich, but nothing exceptional. At $11, not terribly priced either. The beer batter fries were good and the beer flight ($1.50ea) was ok, though to be honest nowhere near the quality of Central Coast.
My waitress was super attentive and exceptionally nice!
The bar downstairs has a very speakeasy vibe, but the patio is where it's at on a beautiful day like today!
Definitely worth a stop for the view!
We stopped in here for lunch and had a great time on their patio (in spring ;)
The service was great. Super friendly and they were right on it to clean a table for us, when we asked to sit on the patio. It was well worth it! It is just great sitting outside with the view on the creek.
The food was great as well. We had their Pastrami Sandwich and the special that day - Brisket Sandwich. The portions were definitely big and delicious too!!!
Fun place with great beer and awesome food. The atmosphere was really nice and laid back which was great for dinner. We sat on the patio overlooking the creek and enjoyed the cool evening. I tried the Pan Seared Mahi with roasted potatoes and this incredible whole grain mustard burre blanc sauce. My wife has the Shepherd's Pie which was very tasty as well. I hada the house Pale Ale which was really great ice cold with dinner. Definitely worth trying if you haven't been here before. The prices aren't bad for the quality and atmosphere, although the menu is not large, there is something for every taste.
Review Source:I am happy to report this brewery is above average. I'm so happy.
The service is better. The beer is better and the food is better.
Smoked Porter. Yes please....Great beer.
The Cascadian dark was a really warm beer in flavor. It should be warming as its 7.9ABV. THANKS! Â The beers all have great character. Most of the food on the menu incorporates the beer. So happy together.
I wish I had a happy hour like this at home. 3.50 beers, 5 specials like chicken tenders, chicken wings, humus and flat bread, fries and onion rings.
One of the better Brew spots I've been to in a while.
Okay, if I lived near SLO, I would probably hang out here way too often!
Really cool basement bar with a comfy arrangement for socializing. Â I really enjoyed hanging out here. Â Also, their beers were pretty good! Â I considered a growler, but as I am sure I will only rarely get the chance to refill it- I opted out. Â Their IPA was very good and their Cascadian Dark Ale was delicious! Â They also have a red here that pretty much rocked my socks! Â Good beer, and a chill place to hang out... win-win.
Their bartenders were also nice and generous with the tasting!
Finally, upstairs is a restaurant and a deck to dine on. Â Super cute. Â The menu is a little unfriendly for the vegetarian in the bunch- and I wish they has some brunch-type-options. Â But seriously a cool spot to dine. Â
I'll be popping in here on my next adventure to SLO for sure!
Decent place! We met up with a few friends for lunch on a weekday and had a good time. There was something for everyone on the menu- I had a salad and my husband had burger and fries. Both of our meals were great.
Our server was attentive and friendly. The inside is kind of dark, but the patio looks fun. It's a great location right over the creek. Hopefully next time it will be warmer and we can sit outside!
We really enjoyed ourselves here. Great staff and some excellent craft beer selections. The brewer really knows what he's doing. Had the golden Ale and the barley wine. Also tried the blueberry habanero glazed rib appetizer. The flavors balanced nicely and went extremely well with our beers! Next time we're in the area we'll stop in again.
Review Source:We stopped here on our way home form Pismo Beach. Â I had heard some good things about the beer and restaurant. Â We sat on the patio overlooking the creek which was a nice setting except for the homeless guys smoking weed below. Â LOL.
I had the Titanis IPA which was very good.
My wife ordered the Hopped-Up Reuben which was very good. Â The house made corn beef is served with a cranberry balsamic red cabbage (wow) cheese and homemade IPA mustard. Â
I got the club with the usual suspects including double smoked bacon and chipotle mayo.
Our waitress Shawna was very friendly and attentive. Â Thanks Shawna.
We will be back!
I admit I didn't know what to expect in terms of food of beer from the creek side brewing company, but was blown away on both accounts. We came on a weekend night at peak hours and were seated immediately creekside. The kind waitress turned on the heating lamp for us.
We were slow to order, but eventually split three dishes. First we ordered their bacon wrapped jalapeño and cheese appetizers. They were very good but a little small in number - we got three for nine dollars, served on some greens.
For our main course we ordered grilled mahi mahi and their pot pie dish. Both were served piping hot, and were incredibly large. We savored every bite! The mahi mahi, a fish we don't normally enjoy was seasoned perfectly with some light blackening seasoning. The pot pie had a crust on top of and beneath the filling. It was divine. Both came with house salads.
The most fun part of dining there was being to sample their beers. I got a 4 oz sampler of their strong barley- sour for $1.50. Everyone else ordered the stout or light wit style beer. I lived both! They didn't taste like award-wining craft beers. I would go back for any of those beers tomorrow.
Our waitress was very chipper and easy going. I'd recommend this restaurant for anyone stopping through, beer goers and non!
Overall, 3.5 stars for the restaurant, but I'm giving it 4 due to the delicious house made beer and wonderful setting. (They brew right in the main dining area, so the smell of steeping barely, hops and malt fill the air with a delicious aroma)
The blue cheese dressing is also freaking fantastic, seriously, no matter what you get ask for some on the side to dip your fries, burger, whatever in, it's so good! My husband and I frequent here fairly often, mostly for just a few beers on weeknights, but over the years we've had a chance to try quite a few of their menu offerings... While good, they tend to be standard type fair. That said, the San Luis Salad is very tasty (although nothing too original), and the stout burger is solid, but nothing to write home about. The ale battered onion rings however are divine and definitely worth tasting. Soups, pot pie and pasta were disappointing.
Best advice: go for the the beer, guest and in house options are all top notch. As for food, If you are a standard diner, you'll be incredibly happy, as it is MUCH better than places like Eureka, Madonna Inn or Urbane(not to mention pretty much any chain restaurant. Applebee's Chili's, and the like). If you're a little more selective, or perhaps looking for more creativity than your average restaurant, you'll most likely enjoy the meal, but it won't be all too memorable. Side note, prices are not bad. All entrees come with a side salad/soup and fries, making the complete meal only about $12-$20 (not including beer of course).
The location, right over a creek, made for a very pleasant dining experience. Â It was a peaceful, serene atmosphere with plenty of trees around and the creek below it. Â The hanging flower baskets were a nice touch.
The food was solid and reasonably priced, the service was good, and the beer was even better. Â I love that small tasters are available, because I wanted to try more than one beer but didn't want to over-indulge. Â The brown ale was malted to an amber perfection and the double dark stout may be one of the best beers I've had.
Next time I'm in the area I will try to make it to Creekside Brewing Company again.
Amazing brews here. Last night I had one of the best pork chops I have ever had in my life. Whoever that angel in the kitchen is she is awesome. I originally came in to try the beers, but the bar was so full I decided to go upstairs and have dinner. These people are so nice and the food was again, amazing.
Review Source:I honestly have no idea how anyone could have a disappointing experience at Creekside. There are so many wonderful things about this place.
1. The setting: The restaurant is lined up along the creek that runs through downtown San Luis. When the weather is nice there are tables on the patio overlooking the creek. Inside the restaurant, there is a very cool brewery vibe.
2. The beer: Best beer in San Luis. They always have about five in house beers on tap that kick butt and are not outrageous in price. Your best bet is to order the taster flight of 8 beers for only 10 bucks!
3. Service: Friendliest wait staff in the world. We have always been able to come right into this place, sit down and enjoy food without a wait or iffy service.
4. Food: Awesome. Their items are super fresh and homemade. Be sure to try the beef barley soup at some point. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu.
If you cannot tell already, i love this place. Creekside is one of the San Luis gems that I desperately miss now that I have moved out of the area. You rock Creekside.
This dining experience threw me off. Going in I expected a much larger menu, with more than one vegetarian option. This not being the case, we contemplated walking out before someone noticed us. (You grab your own menus and seat yourself so we had already had time to peruse the menu.) Service was standard and friendly when they did come around. We thought we would give the vegetarian chili a shot since it sounded delicious and included a salad. I also ordered the mojo tomatoes appetizer which was phenomenal. The app combines cherry tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, and a lemon olive oil to be used as a bruschetta type spread on sliced baguettes they include. When the chili arrived, I actually laughed. It was a bowl of large chunks of dried out vegetables, with no sauce. Strangest thing I'd ever seen called chili. It came with some tortilla chips but was for the most part unenjoyable. Dried out and flavorless, we added almost the entire bottle of hot sauce that was given to us just so we could make it into a somewhat chili type consistency. I wouldn't recommend this dish to anyone.
I'll be back for the mojo tomatoes and maybe some more of the hefeweizen.
I've had some good times here. They have good beer on tap, and during happy hours (M-F 4-6pm i think), you can get a really decent beer for $3 a pint. Fresh.
Happy hour is really the best time to enjoy the location of Creekside: right by the creek! There's an outside patio with a really pretty view, and it's always great to drink some brew while revitalizing in all the negative ions!
It sort of ended on a bad note though. The last time I went right before I moved away from SLO, they charged a drink that was ordered before 6pm for a non-happy hour price. Alas, I was no longer very happy.
IT'S OKAY though. Whatevers. Good times.
I've never been to the restaurant, but I've been to the bar many times. Â My boyfriend and I really love the place. Â I'm not much of a beer fan, so it's great that they have a full bar as well. Â It's probably the best place downtown to sit and talk with your friends and not have to yell over the music. Â There are some nice couches if you're lucky enough to get to them before someone else does. Â The bar being downstairs gives it a nice speakeasy kinda vibe. Â The bar food after the restaurant hours is pretty good and they recently expanded the menu. Â I also went in on graduation morning, as is tradition, and we were the only ones there, they made us some great drinks and since we're regulars they really hooked us up.
The only thing I don't like about it is when it gets busy it gets pretty loud, but if you get there early enough you can beat the crowds.
I gave this place two stars, instead of one, only because of its scenic location overlooking a creek. Â Being in town on business, we wanted some local fare. Â We came across Creekside. Â We walked in and were seated by someone that didn't work there, but appeared to be a regular and friend of the place. Â He let the waiter know we were there. Â The waiter was very friendly, told us they just opened, and I think a little embarrassed that we were seated by a "non-employee".
Now to the leftovers...I mean...the food. Â I ordered a brat and my co-worker ordered the tri-tip sandwich. Â The brat was dry and the bun was hard as a rock. Â The bun was inedible and the brat I struggled to get down. Â The fries were the only savior. Â The tri-tip looked good, but was dry and over-cooked, as well. Â It was obvious that when the waiter said they just opened, what he meant to say was, "we just opened and we're serving yesterday's leftovers". Â Unfortunately, we had to go back to work, so I couldn't wash the dog food down with any beer that other Yelpers are raving about. Â We were tempted to send the food back, but felt we would get more dry food. Â I hope we just went at a bad time. Â Nonetheless, we won't be going back to find out if there is a better time.
Try: French fries
Cute brewery downtown with nice outdoor seating by the creek. We had a snack upstairs and tried the beer. The chicken tenders were surprising good and the battered French Fries were spicy, flavorful, and very crunchy. In other words, try those fries!
A decent whitt, but the rest of the beer was so-so.
This is by far my favorite hangout for Downtown SLO. The bartenders are great and the always have a good selection of beers made in-house. It's a great place to just go and hangout with your buddies. It's also neat in that the bar is downstairs, so it's tucked away.
I've never eaten any of the food here but I've heard good things. Definitely a place to visit if you're ever in town!
At Creekside Brewing you can either get a great table on a little deck overlooking the creek that runs through the center of town, or you can get a nondescript table in a warehouse atmosphere next to the brewing equipment.
Service was great--we liked the waitress and the bartender. Â Excellent bloody mary's, great margaritas, and good beer.
The food, unfortunately, was not so good. Â The vegi chili was really dry. Â The hamburger was pretty bland, considering all the sauteed onions it was topped with. Â The only winner at our table was the potpie--not something I really look for in a restaurant!
Beer is a serious thing in the Bay area. If only other areas could hold their beer to the same standard. Â Creek Side does have some nice beers on tap, but the bar tender can be a little smug with people that seem to be from out of town...
Recently we tried their sour beer... Yuck, if that was the taste intended, wow that was not that bad. Â Their porter was really good, nice taste and was not that heavy.
Not sure what the deal is with the really loud music. Â The space is really small and the music was so loud that people can barely hear each other. We went into the other area to escape the music and they bar tender came in the room and turned on the speakers to full blast. Â We finished our beers and got out of there. Â A small part of me misses garapalo... (sp)
We were traveling North on 101 aiming to get to PCH. Husband had heard great things about this brewery & so we decided to try it out. The IPA was on point. The food was divine. The creekside seating is peaceful & entertaining, as you never knew who was going to be walking/biking the trails next to the creek.
Highly recommend trying their fresh brews & diving into one of their outstanding sandwiches.
Pro: good micro brew, weird underground cavern, clean bathroom (huge plus for downtown)
Con: downstairs - seriously, this is dangerous.
Absolutely love the brew here. My party came by later on the night which resulted in a fairly low drinking crowd downstairs ... quiet place to chill. I had a good time chatting with the friendly barkeep about their brewing process.
Will be coming back again.
The good: Drinks, happy hour
The bad: can get busy, loud
the ugly: nothing really
First off, when I go downtown to drink I do not want to sit around and "relax" I want to dance, but if I were to "relax" somewhere it would be here.
They have games. I have played many a game or drunken trivial pursuit and battleship. They also have scrabble and a few others.
I have not tried the food, but I have tried jalapeno bottle caps. THose things are not to be taken lightly. I can assure you a toilet will be needed at some point either that night or the next day. BEWARE getting them if you are planning on
A) getting laid
B) passing out at your buddies
C) passing out anywhere
D) going to jail
E) graduating
F) Going on a road trip
Pretty much anything that a sudden bout of nasty chorro would ruin.
Beside knowing this my friends still get them every time.
They have good brews and their bathrooms are nice as well.
Overall nothing special about this place.
The food is not that great for the price. You can get much better food in SLO for that kind of price.
For having their own beers its not that good..I had a couple of theirs and none of them made me want another glass...
I had their sliders and they were okay....again nothing special..
The best part of the dinner was the magician that came over to the table to do some tricks.
It was good! We had a nice seating area in the patio viewing the creek. The Belgian Wit beer as really good! It was their seasonal beer!
The dinner was pricey, but it was good!
The best part of the dinner was dessert! We had a BeerFloat!
They had Stout + Kahlua + Chocolate Ice Cream topped with Chocolate Syrup!
YUM!
Kelly, our server, had nice cakes. Okay, with that out of the way, this place needs to bring it up a notch. They seem new, since I have no memory of them being there last time I was in SLO.
My gf ordered the garden salad, which she asked if they could "half," and they said yes. When the salad came out, it was still a full sized one. It did come with one side, and she ordered the seafood bisque. It was barely touched, because it came out cold.
I ordered an appetizer of jalapeño caps. Del Taco sells them as well. Jalapeño rings is what they are known here as. I also ordered the parese sandwhich, which was really good, and a side of roasted garlic mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were cold.
I washed it all down with one of their house stouts. It tasted like coffee oatmeal with a hint of chocolate. AMAZING!
I think the attention to the food temperature needs to be addressed if every other food item that comes out of the kitchen is cold.
They also need to amp up their home brews a bit more. They have more bottled beer than their own. Considering it's a brewery, that's not a good thing.
After visiting the Mission San Luis Obispo and the Art Gallery, I was so hungry that we stopped at the first place with food next to the Creekside area.
I didn't try their beers, just their food...I ordered the seafood bisque based on other yelpers' reviews. Â In fact, I was reading the reviews as I scanned the menu because I didn't want to order anything I would regret.
One of two things happened...either I got a bad batch of seafood bisque or these other yelpers don't appreciate a good bisque. Â I'm going with the former. Â The bisque should be a bit salty and I actually had to add much more salt in. Â Then when I realized the bisque must have had a whole bushel of garlic in the soup, I had to stop and ask myself if the soup was so good that I should risk breathing garlic breath on everyone I met that day.
I decided no bisque for me.
I ordered the sliders and those were pretty delish. Â Â The server was cool and got the manager to take the soup off the bill so we tipped her exceptionally.
I still won't be back. Â Cute place though. Â Definitely sit outside to enjoy the views.
Another Road Trip Brewery Stop:
We rolled here late in the afternoon on memorial day and the place was super quiet. Unfortunately they were out of most of the beers that were brewed on site, but we got to try what they did have. Also, they were rocking tall pints for $3 bucks, which rocks my world compared to ridiculous LA beer prices. Â It was a sunny afternoon on the creek side patio near the mission and it made a good stop for the end a good road trip.
Anyway, they get four stars for being adventurous with their beer. When we were there, they had two different Hefewiezen (sp?), one regular and one dark. Dark Hef? WTF? Apparently it is from toasting the barley before, unlike a traditional Hef. We tried both and they were both good. I am not a huge fan of the style but it was nice and the trad was not the sweet tasteless Hef passed off to tourists. Â I also asked to try the stout which was really hoppy . It was like a dark and malty IPA, but not thick at all. It was really good, I would have ordered another if I didn't have to drive home to LA right after.
Also shout out to Hannah our server who was super nice and made sure that I had the beer I wanted . She even offered to change out my beer to the stout after I had already drank half of the Hef.
I wish this place was closer but I will stop here again.
Man, I really, really wanted to love Creekside Brewery. I think SLO needs a place like this- a decent local brewery where you can get some good food, have a conversation, and not be surrounded by a bunch of frat kids who's taste in beer is governed by what's on sale.
Unfortunately, Creekside isn't this place. At least not yet. I'll give them this, they haven't been open for long, and hopefully they'll make some changes fast. Otherwise, I predict they'll go the way of "Fishdaddy's", "Grappalo", and the other places that have failed miserably in this nice location.
The Good
1. I had the Creekside IPA, it was OK. Actually, great for a first attempt at a local brewery. Very hoppy, fairly strong. I would order it again.
2. The location is beautiful, overlooking the creek, plenty of table space, and I think there's a full bar downstairs.
3. Our server was excellent. He was very relaxed, no pressure, courteous.
The Bad
1. The food. It is horrible and horribly overpriced! I got a plate of fries for 6 bucks. They were terrible, undercooked, flavorless, and hyped as something special on the menu. My friend ordered the Slider Burger for about 6 bucks. No kidding it was the size of a 50 cent piece, I think they had to work hard to make it THAT small. Just ridiculous. The salads were poor, wilty, and spendy. Everything is 3-5 dollars overpriced for the portion sizes and food quality. For 2 beers, 2 fries, a Slider and side salad our bill (with tip) was over 42 bucks!
2. The food was a rip-off. Oh, I already said that.
Overall, I have to give them a 2 star rating, but I sincerely hope they can pull it off because their beer really shows promise and the location is perfect for this type of business. My feeling is that their kitchen will keep this business from really taking off. They either need to double the food quality to match their prices, or price their food to match what it really is: cheap pub grub with fancy names.
I was happy to find the former location of Grappolo up and running again when I stopped through town this week. The layout is mostly the same, but I am happy to announce the return of jazz night (!!!) which will now feature the band in a side room off from the bar area, instead of crammed in the back corner. That part still isn't open yet, but soon enough Creekside will be THE place for Thursday nights out downtown.
The owner is still busting his butt getting everything ready for the grand opening, but stop in and he'll pour you a beer himself. They're still working on their home brews, can't wait to sample the final lot!
