Small town simple bar, which often means you're just getting food as an afterthought. Â However everything turned out to be quite tasty, and the service was quick and friendly. Â Their cheeseburger salad is a neat idea and great for those of us trying to avoid bread and similar junk food. Â The wings were lightly crispy. Â The only downside on the wings was their dipping sauce was just too runny to stick to the wings very well.
They have some high-end microbrews on tap, so that was another plus.
Quirky old saloon that's been there since the 1880's. Lots of cool old photos and relics on the walls. 2 old wood burning stoves, a pool table, a cafe, and lots of out door seating. I used to love this place. Up til about a week ago. Under new management. (From Scottsdale from what I hear. No longer locally owned). Horrible horrible service. Not friendly. This weekend was one of many annual off-road trail runs to Crown King. 150 jeeps this year. This is the 15th annual run. They should have been better prepared. Last year this place was packed, this year pretty dead. 45 min for a pulled pork sandwich?!? No one is here! Â Carded 3 times, front door, bar, and patio. Wrist band upon entering may have been a good idea. The smell of a backed up or full septic tank made the patio a toxic place to enjoy any food or beverage. For a place that relies on our business, I'm sure they lost thousands. Sad. I'll pay extra and take my business to the Mill next time.
Review Source:Kudos to you if you even make it here... it requires about 30 miles of dirt road driving to get to, so you'll probably want to spend the night in Crown King (they rent rooms for $50 above the saloon). Â
The bar itself was packed the night we were there, and featured the Thomas Oliver Band (good tunes). Â It was full of "good ol' boys," many of which had been drinking all day, a few of which got tossed out of the bar before it closed by the doorman. Â This is one of those places where if you look at somebody the wrong way, or say the wrong thing, it would be pretty easy for a fight to break out. Â So be careful... all in all, though, it was more authentic than it was tourist-y. Â We got a kick out of Bev the bartender. Â She knew how to handle the drunks.
The Crown King Ale was actually good - not one of those random cheap beers in a small town with the town name slapped on it. Â This one was tasty, and the price was reasonable.
And the food was good, too. Â We especially liked the chips and salsa. Â The chips were very unique. Â
If you're looking for a change of pace, and have reason enough to brave the drive and go to Crown King, it's definitely worth a visit.
A few times a year a couple friends & I go off-roading. Â Normally we stay in the Superior area, but there was some military testing shenanigans going on there - so we went north instead. Â My buddy says, we're gonna go on an extremely bumpy road, and after about four hours there's a bar in the middle of nowhere. Â I did not believe him. Â
Needless to say, I was impressed. Â I love old towns, especially those who can survive in the middle of nowhere. Â And even more so when practically everyone there got there the same way. Â We happened upon their annual "horseshoe pitch" so it was quite busy, which made for some fantastic people watching.
The beer was frosty, the burgers were tasty and the service was friendly. Â Always nice to hang with some laid back country folk, right? Â We got some homemade fudge and ice cream at the general store next door - both were delicious. Â I guess what I'm saying is, this place is worth the drive - check it out!!
LOVE this place! Â Jack and Coke was spot on, and the pictures on the wall tell the history of this storied place. Â I didn't realize how many friends I have who partied here in the past!! Â I will be back!!
Don't forget to visit the attached cafe, they have great food. Â The General Store has home-made fudge (the dark chocolate/caramel/sea salt fudge is DA BOMB!) and great ambience -- owners know a lot about the area, too!
This is the oldest bar in all of AZ. Â The top floor used to be a brothel.
What, did the 27 miles of dirt road it takes to get here rattle your brain into thinking there was a pot of gold at the end of the drive? Â Where you hoping for valet parking?
The so-so reviews of this bar and the cafe next door make me giggle. Â It is the only bar in town so you really have no other options. Â Be a glass half-full person, belly up to the bar, strike up a conversation (it will be weird) and have some fun!
THIS BAR IS GREAT!! The heater is an old stove right smack in the middle of the place. Â It is not uncommon to find a local customer playing "spoons". Â The karaoke is the worst you will ever hear in your life. Â AND there are usually almost as many dogs as customers. Â Both or which are kind and nice.
We always stop here on the way to our cabin which is a little further down the road.
Drink prices are good if you stick to the wells and you can order grub from the cafe next door (chili is good, but for some reason I get the burger which is also good).
Bottom line. Â This place is BY FAR the nicest bar in town.
