My son liked helping me pick numbers for Keno, and the staff was friendly, but other than that... Â The nite lite chicken and pasta was very bland, my son's steak was way over cooked, and my steak was so so (and expensive). Â While I was leaving I happen to see the cook pressing the steaks on the grill. Â That might explain something! Â I like the fact that it felt like a place that was a town icon, but I'm not really sure why.
Review Source:Steaks are the reason to come here. Fairly pricey for what you're getting.Service is just okay. Atmosphere not so good. Ask for a booth at the back entrance, otherwise open table seating like a high school lunch room. Elbow to elbow and over the top noisy, parking is terrible tight, you will at some time get your vehicle damaged, but again come for the steak or the Lemon Pepper Chicken. Not a favorite place of mine but my wife talks me into coming here.
Review Source:Mmm, I don't think this place lived up to the four star rating it has. Â Yes, the beef was good, but there is a lot more to a restaurant and to a dinner than the slab of meat on your plate.
First, the high points. Â The waitress was very friendly and helpful. Â The service was prompt but not rushed. Â We both had the spinach salad which was pretty tasty, though not at all healthy as you would think. Â I am not really Msteak person but my companion enjoyed his filet mignon.
On the flip side, there a few in impressive things. I will reiterate what other helpers have said in avoiding the pasta side dish. Â It was odd, bland, and slightly cold. Â They could have been a little more generous with the side of vegetables to suit me. Â The decor of the restaurant left something to be desired. Â I wasn't expecting fancy as that would have been out of place, but the inside was tired and needed updating. Â The speakers were so old that they distorted the radio playing in the background which was distracting. Â Finally, they had a MASSIVE television screen dominating the dining room that was playing, of all things, a show of really fat people trying to lose weight. Â Nice entertainment to accompany steak and potatoes!
Where else are you going to get a big ass Montana steak, a lobster bigger than your head and play KENO, while never having to leave the table? Â The Derby.
That's what makes this place my favorite steakhouse in MT. Â The spinach salads are also pretty spectacular, and come with a ridiculously awesome Raspberry vinaigrette. Â A must stop in Butte, MT.
Most rave about the steak at the Derby and I will grant you, it is amazing. However, I wanted to post about the "Night De Light". It is the triple wood grilled chicken with orange/lemon. I love this dish as a change up from steak. I craved it the entire time I was pregnant. I pair that with the strawberry shortcake (when in season) for a perfect evening.
The spinach salad dressing is divine. Someone needs to hack that recipe and give it to me. Each time I travel to Butte, I buy some and carefully pack it to bring home on the plane.
We went here because of the recent reviews that said the beef was better than in Alberta. Â We aren't willing to go quite that far, but it is definitely as good as the Alberta beef we've had; tender enough to cut with a fork. Â We had the rib eye and petit filet and both were excellent. Â We both ordered the spinach salad and small red potatoes, both of which were also very good. Â We would definitely go back again if we're in town.
Review Source:Incredible steak!
I come from Alberta where everyone talks on and on about how Alberta Beef is the best in the world. I mean everyone!
After going to The Derby I feel that I have been lied to and perhaps Montana has the best beef and I feel pretty stupid to have believed the Alberta Beef Marketing for all these years.
I have eaten $125 steaks yet the $26 Derby steak beat them all! I could not believe it.
It was funny I asked to speak to the guy who cooked my steak and apparently he was nervous to come talk to me as he thought he had screwed up. I gave him $20 - that's how impressed I was with how good the streak was! I wanted him to have a tip directly.
I will point out though the pasta side dish with white sauce sucks. So don't order that, instead go with a stuffed potato. Also if you are from out of town like me let me explain the atmosphere kind of sucks. The restaurant is in a Casino but not like a Vegas Casino. They just have VLT's and Keno. So don't come to The Derby expecting fancy 4 star dining. Instead you get casual dining with a steak so amazing you will want to tip 200% of the bill. Montana is weird that way, but I LOVE IT! Butte, MT is such an amazing place to come visit.
We were visiting Butte and we want to support to locals by not eating at Franchises all of the time: so we asked the locals where to go for a good steak and they all said "The Derby. It's pricey but worth it". 'Pricey' usually means what we would normally pay in Calgary.
The Derby is a typical Montana Casino and Steakhouse. It's got some cheesy but homely cowboy decor accompanied with a Keno board: Never knew I could gamble AND eat. Teehee!
We decided to get the Petite Filet Minion (6 oz). The side of pasta is less to be desired and the salad is ok. But when we had the steak... Whoa.... Whoa! It was AMAZING.... And I come from the land of Alberta Beef. I have NEVER had a most tender cut, melt-in-your-mouth steak. Montana Beef has something going on for them.
You know what? Just go for the steak. The boyfriend is the pickiest eater you'll meet (Especially when it comes to his steak) and he asked to see the chef who prepared the steak and gave him $20 in thanks... The filet was already $26 each. It was that good!
Go!
My first time in Butte, we headed to the Derby for dinner. I agree with some of the reviewers - don't judge dinner by the interior. The combo restaurant, casino cage, keno boards were a little off-putting, but dinner was great. Got a bloody mary based on recommendations here - it was good, not great for me - very salty, and THICK. The texture was a bit odd. Caesar salad, tasty - a little bland for my tastes. Got the NY Strip - came perfectly cooked, they do some kind of a flavored butter and a rub. Someone at our table asked for steak sauce - the waiter said "I'm happy to bring you some, but would you taste the steak without it first? It's really flavorful". I am an A-1 fan, but absolutely did not need any additional sauce or flavor - the steak was really great. Our waiter was a hoot - very attentive, nice sense of humor. Overall great meal and a fun experience. HIghly recommended if you are in Butte.
Review Source:A great place for a steak. I prefer well done steaks and many many places think that means dry, burnt, tasteless steak. The Derby knows what well done really means. Juicy, soft, extremely flavorful steak, I would highly recommend trying the Derby out if you are in Butte! As stated in another review, the decor isnt the greatest, but not the worst either. At first glance you dont expect the kind of food that comes out of the kitchen. Service was very friendly, although a little slow since the place was packed and they were down a server or two, but otherwise no complaints.
Review Source:I am from AZ, up here on  business. I am here for 2 weeks, and of course I asked where good places to eat were. I was reccomended many places so I figured I would try all of them. On the first day I decided to eat at The Derby.  I was told that "The Derby" had the best steaks. Well the steaks were good but not the best. I ordered the Sirloin cooked rare. the steak was cooked to order but it was way to buttery it was like the steak was boiled in butter. the seasoning was good just too much butter or whaterever they use. The service was prompt but they mis placed my credit card and I had to wait 30/45 min for them to find it . I was even looking with them. I know people make mistakes but the manager did'nt comp a thing for the inconvenience. the place also does not have eye appeal it looks like an old cheesey casino restraunt like the one from National lampoons Vegas Vacation. I would most definitely rather eat at the " CasaGrandas" on Utah street. look for my review on the CasaGrandas steak house. this is just my 100% truthfull experience I gain nor lose anything from my review.  Anyway's judge for yourself,
Review Source:I am combining a five star rating with a one-star rating to arrive at my overall three-star rating.
First off, you need to know that the Derby is part casino, part pari-mutual horse betting, and part steak house.
On an ON night, the derby features terrific, flavorful, flame-broiled steaks. Â They are really great.
I have also, however, been to the Derby on an Off night. Â My wife ordered the filet (rib steak is normally best here). Â Her filet was approximately 75% fat and grissel (what's wrong with this picture....that's supposed to be a lean cut of meat).
Embarassed, she asked the waitress to make sure that her steak was correct. Â We thought maybe some one order a flame broiled fat tard. The waitress told her that her steak was the filet (I also had one but it was as expected). Â When I told the waitress it was the most pitiful cut I'd ever seen, she offered $5 off or free dessert. Â Instead, I took my wife out to dinner after finishing my steak (hey...I'm not passing up beef for love).
The side dishes are okay. Â The pasta with white sauce that comes with the meat is pretty bland.
Normally, this is  a pretty good place to go for a steak when you're in Butte.
We had a day off in Butte, MT on a tour and asked the front desk at the hotel where to get a good steak. Â They suggested The Derby.
Eight of us walked down there in the rain and were completely underwhelmed when we walked into what seemed to be a casino/bar. Â We were pretty wrong to judge by appearances. Â The very friendly staff quickly accommodated our large party and we were sipping on Moose Drools in no time. Â Most of us ordering ribeye cuts in varying degrees of doneness (from medium rare to medium well). Â One of us had the salmon, and on a suggestion from the waitress one of us had the full rack of ribs.
Our meals did not disappoint. Â I had the ribeye medium rare and it was cooked exactly how I like it. Â The mashed potatoes and veggies were excellent as well. Â A perfect portion and I didn't leave feeling like I overate.
I tried a piece of filet mignon from another plate and it was excellent as well. Â I kind of wish I would have had it in retrospect. Â The rack of ribs was ENORMOUS and fall-off-the-bone tender. Â Smoky and juicy, they were cooked PERFECTLY.
The drinks list was short but effective. Â The margaritas were just fine. Â Not mind blowing, but okay. Â The menu even says "if you know the recipe we'll try to make it!" Â which I found very endearing. Â Nothing like giving it the good old college try!
All in all, a pleasant day off experience in a town where I thought I'd have literally nothing to do except watch the rain fall. Â Check it out if you're in town! Â
Oh and it won't break the bank either. Â My steak, salad, and sides and 3 beers were just over 30 dollars. Â Not too bad!
I have been to Butte twice and both times I have visited The Derby. The steaks are amazing. I leave already wanting more. I am sure that if I lived in Butte, I would need heart surgery every year. I don't know how else to put it...it is simply the best food in the area (and the best steak in all 11 states I have been to). You must visit.
Review Source:Some days, when I'm feeling sad with my food options in Vallejo, I like to torture myself by wallowing in my memories of The Derby.
This is the best place to get a steak. EVER. Â I would bet my mother on it.
They cook steaks to perfection. Â Rare actually comes out rare, and YES, there is actually a distinction between rare, and medium rare...(so many restaurants seem to miss this). Â But not The Derby. Â I have never had to send a steak back, nor has anyone I've ever eaten with.
At dinner, get the petite fillet ($24) - it is so heavenly! Â All Entrees come with a salad (Ceasar, house, or spinach) - do yourself a favor, get the spinach. Â The spinach salad comes with a fantastic oil/vinegar dressing, and they combine just the right amount of eggs, bacon, and onion - it outshines the rest of the 'pre-dinner' greens. Â The steak also comes with a potato, and your choice of steamed veggies or pasta. Â
If you're not up for the most divine steak of your life...you can always go with the chicken - (I recommend the Diner's Delight, a house pasta with a light cream sauce and tender chicken breast strips) for a modest price ($8-11). Â
For vegetarians, the Derby has a few options, but they are more than willing to make most of the pastas without meat, as well as the salads if you ask.
Appetizers to eat-your-heart-out over are the Crab WonTons, or the Spinach Dip.
I have never had a better Bloody Mary in the town of Butte - so tasty. Â It comes garnished with a little cocktail shrimp, onions, asparagus, and green beans, and its fairly easy on the pocketbook ($3.50).
The Derby runs excellent lunch specials during the weekday, with many of their main dinner items being knocked down in price a good $3-5 or more. Â
The interior of The Derby leaves a little to be desired, with the corner of the main dining room having a HUGE big screen TV - "you betcha, donchya know ya can't miss the game while takin' the broad out for dinner, oh yah.."
The bar/lounge area is nicer, and seems more intimate/better situated for date scenarios.
The Derby is considered a "fancy-pants" dinner establishment, but the attire is casual. Â The poor waitresses are stuck in black nylons, black short-shorts, and a sparkly Derby top, but they are so ridiculously friendly you can't help but feel bad for raising the ole eyebrow at the outfits.
Really, I can't say enough good things about the food here. Â I mean c'mon- I wanna bet my mom that you won't get a better steak. Â Do yourself a favor, eat here if you're ever passing through...and then tell me how great it was, so moms can rest easy. :)
