I wanted to update this review from my first one. I haven't back in a while since they changed the menu and are concentrating more on the late night drinking, dancing and other things. The menu is alot smaller now and not such an assortment as a there was before.

This place is really fun! The only thing  they need to work on, is the sound!! I don't know if it was too much base. But couldn't really hear or understand the song the band was playing.  Oh yeah one more thing is I thought the Banda suppose to play up on stage. They just played for this guy and only played corridos all night!!! I like corridos but come on! Need to play some fun danceable music too, Please!!!!  But definitely will return to this place!

We attended the MMA event on the 1/29/12 and at first it went fine. We were really excited to have the event in Gilroy and I had never been to Tequila Town and was excited to see it.
It seemed like a big enough area but as the people piled in you could clearly tell there was not enough seating. People were standing around which made it hard to come and go to the restroom or bar. They have two bars there and only one was serving and as far as I saw they had 2 bartenders there. I can honestly say I never waited that long for a drink but I do know others who said they were waiting a while.

The bathroom was large and as stated before I never had to wait to use it. The CON there were no in and outs ( even for the 21+) and people were smoking in the bathroom. When I had went to ask about the in and outs the security guard told me she didn't know anything but that we can not go in and out. As she decided to smoke right in front of people asking, almost in a mocking way.

After the event was over around 10:30 or so we had security guards yelling at us "Move it out people, they will let you back in but you have to get out now" You think they could have come up with a better way to handle a crowd?!

We go to a lot of the MMA events and by far this one was not the most pleasant I know that with every experience you learn new things and hopefully this place does.

    Re: MMA Event- 1/28/12

I don't know how it operates on an average night but, as far as an event location goes, this place is a joke!

First off, let me just say I've attended several of these MMA events, which are held in a variety of different venues from school gyms to bars and clubs. I go in support of a friend who is a fighter and when it was announced he would be fighting in Gilroy, the area where most of are from, born and raised, it was very exciting!! We showed up in group of about 60+ people ready for a good time and the place was just a huge let down!

Frisking of the females at the door with arms out legs spread and all, really!? I felt this was so ridiculous.

When I finally get in the door I was informed by a member of our party that there wasn't any more seats! I mean, we payed $30 in advance to attend this MMA Event my friend was fighting in and the place ran out of seats literally moments after the doors opened!!? The event was clearly over capacity yet somehow that didn't stop continued ticket sales at the door! It was insanely frustrating! And standing also seemed to be prohibited in the whole entire building as well. I was even asked at one point by a bartender not to stand in front of his bar!! And that was after he refused to sell me a drink. He said if I wanted a drink I had to find a waitress.

The ladies room reeked of cigarettes and was filled with smoke because women were actually smoking in there due to securities refusal to let anyone out for a smoke. This is a bar, where alcohol is served, and you're really not gonna let people out to smoke. You have got to be kidding me!!

Management was virtually impossible to locate/identify and when you did see staff or possible management scurrying by, nobody could give me a straight answer. They were unorganized, ill informed and nobody knew what was going on and the security was beyond rude and completely unprofessional. The whole thing was a disaster!

We waited over an hour before staff finally pulled their heads out of there butts and started bringing out more seats for 100+ people without a seat and still there were some people left standing. On top of that the event was another hour or so if not longer late to start. Unbelievable.

Like I said, the place is a joke. plain and simple.

Like the other reviewers have said, I appreciate the fact that you are trying to revitalize Downtown Gilroy. ...  BUT, a cover charge?  Methinks not.  This is Gilroy, not San Francisco.  Totally out of the question.  I don't care if it is Saturday night.  There were less than 50 people inside the lounge at 11pm.

The other thing that bothered me about my first visit was the fact that the group I was with was spending a ton of money on tequila shots and hard alcohol.  It was extremely apparent that I was the designated driver and I was only ordering a Diet Coke.  I am always the Designated Driver.  Every bar I go to, they charge you once for the soft drink, then they won't charge you again for the rest of the night (you tip the bartender for the service each time though).  This standard practice and proper etiquette.  It encourages responsibility.  But nope, the muscle head bartender charged me $3.50 every time I ordered another Diet Coke, even after I told him I was the DD.  EPIC FAIL guys!

I didn't like the whole pat down by security, having to take everything out of my pockets.  That just felt plain ghetto and I contemplated turning around.  If my friends weren't inside, I wouldn't have gone in.

The DJ was playing great music, a mix of 90's, 00's and current Hip Hop, top 40.  That is why I gave it a 2 star rating.  The crowd was also remarkably pleasant, nice and there was zero pushing.  The dance floor is huge.  So, that's a plus.

I was just REALLY put off about the whole Designated Driver thing.  You guys really need to catch a clue on that one!

Downtown Gilroy, I appreciate that you're trying. Hopefully one day you'll thrive like downtown Morgan Hill. I think Desero could definitely help out with that, once they find their direction.

Let's start from the beginning! I went there last night for dinner and drinks with my roommate and couple friends. Desero replaced The Strand, which I don't know much about except people would host events there. So it's a big space! The bar/restaurant is broken up into different sections, with a really big back room that was curtained off. But the huge tequila bar was back there, so hopefully the curtain thing was just temporary.

There's a full bar in front too though, with TVs and a ton of seating. My friends and I sat around the corner from there, which felt kind of isolated until more people showed up later in the evening. There was a live musician the first part of the night, which was fine, but it was a little loud. After he left there was a DJ, and some people were dancing. This is what I mean about finding their direction. With 800+ different kinds of tequila, and tequila flights on the menu and whatnot, I got the feeling that they wanted to be more of an upscale place, catering to people who like to sip tequila and not pound shots of it. But with the DJ and all that, it didn't match up. I could be totally wrong of course, but I feel like it would be better if they went the more upscale route.

But moving on! We ordered the simple chips and salsa appetizer, and wow, that was amazing salsa. Perfect amount of spice and flavor. The chips were also great, so that was a nice start to everything. I didn't order any dinner, but my roommate got the chicken taco appetizer as his meal, and he really enjoyed it with the pico de gallo on top.

The menu was a little confusing to me, because they had stuff like chips and salsa and tacos, but then a ton of Italian food. So that's another direction thing that could probably be tweaked. I wouldn't know how to categorize the menu to someone who asked. I do plan to go back and order food though, since the appetizers I tried were so good.

Now on to the drinks! My roommate is a tequila lover, and it really means something if he's impressed by a margarita. And he was! He ordered the Presidente margarita, and loved it. If he loved it, you know it was good! And what else could be expected, from a restaurant with tequila in the name. So they're definitely nailing that part of it.

Service was wonderful! I was little worried, since it's a new restaurant, and that can definitely be hit or miss. We had Nancy, and she was such a sweetheart. There was another TV over where we were sitting, and she even changed the channel to Food Network when my friends requested it. I guess we can be a handful sometimes. :P But she was totally gracious and an attentive server, for the entire 2 hours that we were there.

I really hope this place finds its legs and makes a significant mark on downtown Gilroy. I think they can do it, I just want them to figure out who they are. If I'm unsure about how to classify them, other people probably feel the same. But go for yourself and give it a try, it is definitely worth it. :)
