Not bad.
I visited Dornan's Chuckwagon option this morning. It is an interesting concept, with the food being cooked outdoors under a structure, over what appeared to be fire-powered cook surfaces. Not sure. Either way, it smelled amazing. The Chuckwagon area is near the teepee.
I ordered the sourdough pancakes with scrambled eggs and bacon. I saw something about all-you-can-eat on the pancakes on their menu and website, but I was never offered more than my three pancakes. This came with two eggs and I think three strips of bacon. I also had orange juice, which was self-serve and pretty concentrated.
My food came to me under a covered eating area with a view of the Tetons. Seating is picnic table style. The pancakes were wonderful, if you like sourdough pancakes. I happen to love them, but they are an acquired taste. They tend to be a bit denser and moister than conventional pancakes, which may explain why one reviewer felt they were runny. On the other hand, my eggs were runny. But back to the pancakes. They had an excellent and complex sourdough flavor suggesting use of a real starter, not some powdered junk. The flavor meshed well with the syrup offerings. As I said, my eggs were runny, may they added milk? Regardless, they tasted fine. The bacon was also good, if unremarkable.
I'm deducting points because of a few factors: the eggs, the confusion I had about all-I-could-eat (I at least wanted an offer...), and because ether ad in the local dining book said they opened at 7AM when they opened today at 8AM, consistent with their website. The latter is a common issue in Jackson during the edges of the summer season in my experience, however. But... I'm more than pleased to recommend Dornan's for breakfast.
Hands down, Dornan's has the best views of the Tetons in town! And you can have drinks and good food while you're enjoying the views. This is a great place to end your day, whether you were hiking, biking, rafting, or just sightseeing in the park. It's definitely a "come as you are" atmosphere and fun for all ages. The menu has great pizzas (my favorite option), sandwiches, pasta, and salads (another fave).
Every Monday they have a Hootenany; it's outside at the chuck wagon in the summer. It's a free night of local and visiting talent (you sign up to perform and they assign numbers; each person performs one song). Every week is different, but you usually walk away feeling like you had a great experience! You can order in the restaurant and bring your food outside, or they have a BBQ buffet available outside. There is a full bar inside and outside. If you would prefer a bottle of wine, you can purchase it at their fabulously stocked wine/liquor store and they will uncork it for you to enjoy at no extra charge. Bottom line - there is no excuse not to visit Dornan's; they have it all, any way you want it!
Apparently the reason to go to Dornan's is for the view. It's certainly not for the food or service. This is strictly a pizza and burger kind of place. A calzone was bland and underfilled. Spinach salad was equally bland, with just a couple of small pieces of smoked salmon. Staff are apparently all seasonal workers with limited English, so no special requests. We said the salad needed to be gluten-free, so no croutons. Naturally, it came with a big hunk of bread on top. Not even fresh, good bread. So maybe come for a glass of wine and the view? Well, I can't speak to the wine options, but the view seems to be exactly the same as what you get from the Craig Thomas Visitors Center around the bend - where it's air conditioned. Skip Dornan's.
Review Source:I stopped in for the chuckwagon breakfast. The outdoor setting in front of the Teton mountains is beautiful but the food quality needs to be raised a few notches.
I ordered the classic which includes all you can eat pancakes with two eggs any style and choice of meat for $10. I drank coffee for an additional $1 which was very good. The bacon is excellent. I ordered eggs over easy and received them hard. It really takes skill to screw that up. The pancakes were mushy. I thought maybe the first serving was a mistake and ordered a couple more pancakes which I requested well done. They were still mushy, which leads me to believe the problem is with the batter they use as they were rather flavorless as well.
They also serve French Toast so maybe that with scrambled eggs might be a better selection, but since this was my first experience at Dornan's, I can't recommend them.
Okay lets start with the positive!! The views from this restaurant are spectacular! We were also lucky enough to see a moose VERY close by, and a fox! The staff seated us right away and was very friendly, the mac n cheese and cheese pizza were delicious!. Now the things that could use improvement! The house salad (a typical green salad) was not good at all. The lettuce and carrots not only looked soggy and unappetizing, but tasted how it looked! The waitress also brought my brother the wrong order (luckily she picked up the wrong plate, and so he got his right away) but I am a vegetarian and she took my order wrong and brought me pepperoni pizza. This was a bit inconvenient due to everyone else having their food and me having to wait fifteen minutes to arrive. But i will give her the benefit of the doubt, heck she could have been new... or something. Although they did apologize, it would have been nice if they would have given us something complimentary as an apology, but overall I do not think I would go back do to the inexperienced staff, and the fact that only half the food tasted good.
Review Source:My group ordered three bison burgers with chips, a bowl of lentil soup and one kids hotdog. Â The burgers were huge, the buns were tasty but the burgers themselves were almost raw. Â The lentil soup was very bland, and the kicker was that it took going back and asking 3 times for the hotdog in order to finally get it. Â All of that for $50 makes me not want to go back.
Review Source:This is the most beautiful porch I've ever sat on with a stunning view of the Tetons. Great place to stop and relax for a meal when you're on vacation. My boyfriend worked in the Tetons over the summer and adopted this place as a hangout.
The prices and fair and the food was delicious. I had pasta. I heard the pizza is great.
Stumbled upon this place during our trip at Grand Teton. Wanted to try a buffalo burger, and I'm so glad I tried it here for the first time! Delicious, thick buffalo burger served with fries and a drink for about $10. I especially loved the chuckwagon themed decor! Â There are benches and tables under a tent, and also out on the grass if you prefer to enjoy the sun and Grand Teton scenery. Â
Thank you Dornan's for a great food and chuckwagon experience!
Dornan's is a great locals spot that offers spectacular views of the Tetons. Sit back, relax and enjoy a nice cold refreshing beer on the roof. The food is not gourmet by any means but Dornan's does a great job! Â I take all of my out of town guests here at least once during their visit to Jackson Hole.
Review Source:Nestled away near the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, Dornan's is a nice place to grab a bite when you're in the area. Â They only lost one star for service, which was not that great, but that could vary by the day.
Now, it's not like you've got a ton of choices in this area, so you will probably end up going here anyway (everyone you talk to will recommend this for a place to eat), but even without much competition, they still do a stand up job with their food.
The Vegetarian Angle
There were a nice handful of options for vegetarians there, including a fresh vegetable, mozzarella, and pesto sandwich, a veggie calzone, and a cheese pizza among other options. Â We found the calzone to be superb and the best among the choices we elected to sample. Â The pizza and the sandwich were also quite excellent.
Dornan's, a pub and wine shop located at the edge of Teton National Park, may have the best view in America.
Sit at the bar and order some pizza or a burger along with a Moose Drool brown ale. Look outside the window and you may see wildlife crossing the Snake River (after all, you're on Moose Street in Moose, Wyoming), in the shadow of the craggy peaks of the Grand Tetons.
This is definitely a locals' spot, so if you need the ski report or fishing conditions, just ask. It's probably snowing, even in August, and the fish are probably biting.
When you're done with your meal, walk out the door and check out the adjoining Dornan's Wine Shop. It's billed as the having the best selection of vinos between New York and California. And I wouldn't be shocked if that was true.
For the view alone, Dornan's gets cinco estrellas.
